  • PIXE and proton microprobe advances at the Lund Institute of Technology
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Inst. and Methods in Physics Research, B. - 0168-583X. ; 40-41:PART 1, s. 685-689
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A review of recent advances in high-energy ion beam analysis at the Lund Institute of Technology is presented. A nonvacuum specimen chamber allows chemical speciation using a combination of ion beam analysis and controlled heating. The development of a new versatile scanning proton microbeam based on a new dedicated accelerator, an achromatic triplet lens and an advanced specimen chamber is outlined together with the performance of a microVAX-II/VMEbus-based data acquisition system.

  • Application of Plasma Desorption Mass Spectrometry to Molecular Weight Determination of Structural Protein from Insect Cuticle
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Journal of Mass Spectrometry. - : Wiley. - 1076-5174 .- 1096-9888. ; 13:12, s. 689-691
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During sequence determination of a structural protein from the cuticle of the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, a discrepancy was found between the molecular weight calculated from the sequence data (15 323) and that estimated by SDS-gel electrophoresis (21 600). The protein contains several repeated sequences, and the discrepancy might indicate that part of the sequence was missing or that the protein contained a large prosthetic group. The molecular weight of the protein was determined by 127I-plasma desorption mass spectrometry to be 15 329±50 which confirms the sequence data and shows the molecular weight determination based on SDS-electrophoresis to be too high.

  • Environmental exposure to lead and arsenic among children living near a glassworks
  • 1988
  • Ingår i: Science of the Total Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1026 .- 0048-9697. ; 77:1, s. 25-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Concentrations of lead (Pb) in blood (B-Pb, geometric mean 34.6 micrograms l-1, n = 127) and inorganic arsenic (As) and its metabolites in urine (U-As, mean 5.1 micrograms/g creatinine, n = 35) did not differ between children living in a village close to a glassworks emitting both Pb and As and children living in a reference area. There was no significant effect on B-Pb and U-As related to parents working at the glassworks or consumption of domestically grown vegetables. Neither was there any significant effect upon B-Pb of sex, age, potentially lead-exposing hobbies, or consumption of canned foods. Boys had higher U-As than girls (5.8 vs 4.2 micrograms/g creatinine, p = 0.005), and there was a decrease with age (range 8.4-10.4 years, 27% per year, p = 0.01). Further, parental smoking habits had a significant effect on both B-Pb and U-As. In children of non-smoking parents the B-Pb was 30 micrograms l-1, in children with one parent who smoked 39 micrograms l-1 (smoking father 37, smoking mother 41 micrograms l-1) and in children with two parents who smoked 47 micrograms l-1 (p less than 0.001). The corresponding values for U-As were 4.2, 5.5, and 13 micrograms/g creatinine, respectively (p = 0.01).

  • The reversibility of the snuff-induced lesion : an experimental study in the rat
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine. - : Wiley. - 0904-2512 .- 1600-0714. ; 15:10, s. 540-543
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Snuff lesions were induced in 30 rats. Ten of the snuff-exposed rats were killed immediately after 13 months snuff exposure, as were the 10 control animals. Ten rats were killed 1 month and 10 rats 4 months after the snuff administration had ceased. The rats exposed to snuff for 13 months exhibited hyperplastic, hyperorthokeratotic epithelium with focal mild atypia, focal ulcerations and marked subepithelial fibrosis. These changes were markedly reduced or absent in rats exposed to snuff and killed after a snuff-free interval of 1 or 4 months. Similar differences between the test-groups were seen in the epithelium lining the gingival sulcus of the lower incisors. This area seems to be more sensitive to chemical exposure than the oral mucosa proper as more severe microscopical changes were seen here. Snuff exposure results in the development of a hyperplastic, reactive, reversible lesion of the oral mucosa, suggesting that snuff predominantly has promoting activity when administered for a relatively short interval of time.
