  • Effects of Core-valence and Core-core Correlation On the Line-strength of the Resonance Lines In Li-i and Na-i
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 49:3, s. 2181-2184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The resonance lines in Li I and Na I both exhibit a puzzling discrepancy between experiment and accurate ab initio calculations. Only results from a semiempirical method, that in principal neglects core-core correlation, agree with the experiments. The agreement with a multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock calculation, including only core-valence correlation, shows that this might be fortuitous. A method for including some core-core correlation is designed and gives results in excellent agreement with other accurate ab initio methods.

  • On measurement of operational security
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0885-8985. ; 9:10, s. 7-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ideally, a measure of the security of a system should capture quantitatively the intuitive notion of "the ability of the system to resist attack." That is, it should be operational, reflecting the degree to which the system can be expected to remain free of security breaches under particular conditions of operation (including attack). Instead, current security levels at best merely reflect the extensiveness of safeguards introduced during the design and development of a system. Whilst we might expect a system developed to a higher level than another to exhibit "more secure behavior" in operation, this cannot be guaranteed; more particularly, we cannot infer what the actual security behavior will be from knowledge of such a level. In the paper we discuss similarities between reliability and security with the intention of working toward measures of "operational security" similar to those that we have for reliability of systems. Very informally, these measures could involve expressions such as the rate of occurrence of security breaches, or the probability that a specified "mission" can be accomplished without a security breach. This new approach is based on the analogy between system failure and security breach, but it raises several issues which invite empirical investigation. We briefly describe a pilot experiment that we have conducted to judge the feasibility of collecting data to examine these issues.

  • Reflective Production in the Final Assembly of Motor Vehicles - An Emerging Swedish Challenge
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - 1758-6593 .- 0144-3577. ; 12:7/8, s. 117-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presents some theoretical principles and empirical evidence relating to the new Swedish production systems for final assembly of motor vehicles. Contends that in these production systems it is possible simultaneously to enhance efficiency and quality of working life. Briefly sketches three production forms as they apply to the final assembly of automobiles and discusses the societal environments in which these different forms of production have evolved. It focuses on Volvo Uddevalla plant as one of the main examples so far of a reflective production system for final assembly of automobiles. Amplifies the analysis of different production flow patterns for final assembly and in particular addresses the issue of semi‐parallel mechanistic production flow and parallel organic production flow as alternatives to serial flow on a conventional line assembly. A comment: This publication is authored together with e.g. senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures. But also personal at our department/research group (Mats Johansson) well as our knowledgeable contact person (Bertil Johansson) within Volvo contributed (he has really helped us out for decades and was responsible for the continuous contacts with Volvo in most any matter).

  • Development of Assembly Competence in Parallelized Flow Assembly Systems
  • 1994
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This publication explains the competence development (in form of the length of work cycle times, which were not fixed) within the Volvo Uddevalla plant. Note the minimum work cycle time was 1/4 of an automobile (an inventible result due to the sociotechnically advanced of assembly system design) (in fact, quite ingeniously carried out). The advance material feeding technique was the reason for this competence level (a result of the research and development work within some of the authors' experimental workshops).

  • Extended Work Cycle Assembly - A crucial learning experience
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: The International journal of human factors in manufacturing. - : Wiley. - 1045-2699 .- 1522-7111. ; 4:3, s. 293-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on a crucial learning experience relating to design principles applied in the Volvo Car Corporation final assembly plant in Uddevalla, Sweden. These principles include the concept of holistic learning, specifically through the creation and transformation of complementary, interrelated physical, semantical, and cognitive structures. We report on the learning environment and learning aids, as well as the learning method applied to the assembly of one-quarter of an automobile performed by one single person. Through the application of this learning concept, it proved possible to dramatically reduce the learning time required for long cycle time assembly work, making cycle times of 2 hours or more a practical proposition for full-scale automotive manufacturing today.
