  • Towards benchmarking of functional safety in the automotive industry
  • 2013
  • In: Lecture Notes in Computr Science. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783642387883 ; , s. 111-125
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Functional safety is becoming increasingly important in the automotive industry to deal with the growing reliance on the electrical and/or electronic (E/E) systems and the associated complexities. The introduction of ISO 26262, a new standard for functional safety in road vehicles, has made it even more important to adopt a systematic approach of evaluating functional safety. However, standard assessment methods of benchmarking functional safety of automotive systems are not available as of today. This is where the BeSafe (Benchmarking of Functional Safety) project comes into the picture. BeSafe project aims to lay the foundation for benchmarking functional safety of automotive E/E systems. In this paper, we present a brief overview of the project along with the benchmark targets that we have identified as relevant for the automotive industry, assuming three abstraction layers (model, software, hardware). We then define and discuss a set of benchmark measures. Next, we propose a benchmark framework encompassing fault/error models, methods and the required tool support. This paper primarily focuses on functional safety benchmarking from the Safety Element out of Context (SEooC) viewpoint. Finally, we present some preliminary results and highlight potential future works.

  • A study of the impact of single bit-flip and double bit-flip errors on program execution
  • 2013
  • In: Lect. Notes Comput. Sci.. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 9783642407925 ; 8153 LNCS
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of bit-flip errors in instruction set architecture registers and main memory locations. Comprising more than two million fault injection experiments conducted with thirteen benchmark programs, the study provides insights on whether it is necessary to consider double bit-flip errors in dependability benchmarking experiments. The results show that the proportion of silent data corruptions in the program output, is almost the same for single and double bit errors. In addition, we present detailed statistics about the error sensitivity of different target registers and memory locations, including bit positions within registers and memory words. These show that the error sensitivity varies significantly between different bit positions and registers. An important observation is that injections in certain bit positions always have the same impact regardless of when the error is injected.

  • Success of a low-sloping rack for improving downstream passage of silver eels at a hydroelectric plant
  • 2013
  • In: Freshwater Biology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0046-5070 .- 1365-2427. ; 58, s. 2168-2179
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • 1. The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is a critically endangered species, and one major threat is thesurvival of silver eels migrating downstream towards the sea from lake and river rearing areas. Duringthis migration, many eels are impinged and die on intake racks, or are injured or killed whenpassing through turbines.2. Intake racks at a hydroelectric plant were modified to avoid impingement and to collect eels withoutinjury; high mortality on both racks and in turbines was previously documented. Modificationsconsisted of reducing the rack gap width from 20 to 18 mm, decreasing the rack slope from 63 to 35degrees, increasing the rack surface area by 58% and installing six openings in the rack leading totraps.3. Downstream passage conditions for silver eels at the hydroelectric plant were significantlyimproved, reducing mortality from >70% at the old steep 20 mm racks to <10% at the modified18 mm rack collection facility. No tagged eels were impinged and killed on the racks, and 80%entered the collection facility.4. Survival can probably be improved even more, as the individuals that passed the facility mostlikely escaped through holes in the traps. Moreover, injured untagged eels were still encountered atthe modified racks, illustrating the need for rehabilitative measures to be implemented at all obstaclesbetween the main eel rearing areas and the sea.

  • Raloxifene and alendronate containing thin mesoporous titanium oxide films improve implant fixation to bone.
  • 2013
  • In: Acta biomaterialia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-7568 .- 1742-7061. ; 9:6, s. 7064-73
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study tested the hypothesis that osteoporosis drug-loaded mesoporous TiO2 implant coatings can be used to improve bone-implant integration. Two osteoporosis drugs, Alendronate (ALN) and Raloxifene (RLX), were immobilized in nanoporous oxide films prepared on Ti screws and evaluated in vivo in rat tibia. The drug release kinetics were monitored in vitro by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation and showed sustained release of both drugs. The osteogenic response after 28days of implantation was evaluated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), removal torque, histomorphometry and ultrastructural interface analysis. The drug-loaded implants showed significantly improved bone fixation. In the case of RLX, stronger bone-remodelling activity was observed compared with controls and ALN-loaded implants. The ultrastructural interface analysis revealed enhanced apatite formation inside the RLX coating and increased bone density outside the ALN coating. Thus, this novel combination of a thin mesoporous TiO2 carrier matrix and appropriate drugs can be used to accelerate implant fixation in trabecular bone.

  • Gut metagenome in European women with normal, impaired and diabetic glucose control

  • In: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 498:7452, s. 99-103
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a result of complex gene-environment interactions, and several risk factors have been identified, including age, family history, diet, sedentary lifestyle and obesity. Statistical models that combine known risk factors for T2D can partly identify individuals at high risk of developing the disease. However, these studies have so far indicated that human genetics contributes little to the models, whereas socio-demographic and environmental factors have greater influence(1). Recent evidence suggests the importance of the gut microbiota as an environmental factor, and an altered gut microbiota has been linked to metabolic diseases including obesity(2,3), diabetes(4) and cardiovascular disease(5). Here we use shotgun sequencing to characterize the faecal metagenome of 145 European women with normal, impaired or diabetic glucose control. We observe compositional and functional alterations in the metagenomes of women with T2D, and develop a mathematical model based on metagenomic profiles that identified T2D with high accuracy. We applied this model to women with impaired glucose tolerance, and show that it can identify women who have a diabetes-like metabolism. Furthermore, glucose control and medication were unlikely to have major confounding effects. We also applied our model to a recently described Chinese cohort(4) and show that the discriminant metagenomicmarkers for T2D differ between the European and Chinese cohorts. Therefore, metagenomic predictive tools for T2D should be specific for the age and geographical location of the populations studied.

  • Could the use of ICT tools be the way to increase competitiveness in Swedish industry?
  • 2013
  • In: IFAC Proceedings Volumes (IFAC-PapersOnline). - 1474-6670. - 9783902823410 ; 12:1, s. 179-186
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • When operators gain increasingly critical roles for the performance of industries, the operator competitiveness becomes more significant to maintain the sustainable competitive advantages of their company. The research project ‘Operator of the Future’ aims to increase the competitiveness of future Swedish operators, by providing them with advanced decision support tools. Multiple factors must be considered when specifying operator needs and designing support tools. This paper focuses on operator maturity for use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools, professionally and domestically. Further, important aspects of social sustainability are discussed relative to the implementation of ICT tools. Results are presented as analysed empirical data, collected in three global Swedish production companies.

  • Validation of the complexity index method at three manufacturing companies
  • 2013
  • In: Proceedings - 2013 IEEE International Symposium on Assembly and Manufacturing, ISAM 2013. - 9781479916573 ; , s. 55-57
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In order to manage increasing numbers of product variants, tools that can reduce or manage production complexity are vital. The paper describes CompleXity Index (CXI), an index-based method and tool that assess the complexity at an industrial workstation. CXI was validated at three Swedish manufacturing companies investigating how different roles affect the index calculation and if the method measures what was intended. In all three cases, CXI was seen as a useful tool that provided a holistic view of the problems seen at a station. In addition it was indicated that complexity and unbalanced work was connected and that the method could be used to predict problem areas on new stations.

  • Benchmarking the Hardware Error Sensitivity of Machine Instructions
  • 2013
  • In: Proceedings of the 2013 IEEE Workshop on Silicon Errors in Logic - System Effects (SELSE 9).
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of an extensive fault injection study of the impact of processor faults that manifest as bit flip errors in instruction set architecture registers and main memory locations. The aim is to investigate if bit errors that propagate to the source registers or memory locations of a given class of machine instructions have a similar probability of generating undetected value failures (i.e., silent data corruptions) for different programs. The results show a fairly large variation in the error sensitivity over different programs for all classes of machine instructions, which indicates that the effectiveness of error mitigation techniques that target specific machine instructions may vary significantly for different programs.
