  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • The ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - 1748-0221. ; 3:S08002
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a general-purpose, heavy-ion detector at the CERN LHC which focuses on QCD, the strong-interaction sector of the Standard Model. It is designed to address the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma at extreme values of energy density and temperature in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Besides running with Pb ions, the physics programme includes collisions with lighter ions, lower energy running and dedicated proton-nucleus runs. ALICE will also take data with proton beams at the top LHC energy to collect reference data for the heavy-ion programme and to address several QCD topics for which ALICE is complementary to the other LHC detectors. The ALICE detector has been built by a collaboration including currently over 1000 physicists and engineers from 105 Institutes in 30 countries, Its overall dimensions are 16 x 16 x 26 m(3) with a total weight of approximately 10 000 t. The experiment consists of 18 different detector systems each with its own specific technology choice and design constraints, driven both by the physics requirements and the experimental conditions expected at LHC. The most stringent design constraint is to cope with the extreme particle multiplicity anticipated in central Pb-Pb collisions. The different subsystems were optimized to provide high-momentum resolution as well as excellent Particle Identification (PID) over a broad range in momentum, up to the highest multiplicities predicted for LHC. This will allow for comprehensive studies of hadrons, electrons, muons, and photons produced in the collision of heavy nuclei. Most detector systems are scheduled to be installed and ready for data taking by mid-2008 when the LHC is scheduled to start operation, with the exception of parts of the Photon Spectrometer (PHOS), Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) and Electro Magnetic Calorimeter (EMCal). These detectors will be completed for the high-luminosity ion run expected in 2010. This paper describes in detail the detector components as installed for the first data taking in the summer of 2008.

  • Observation of ZZ Production in p(p)over-bar Collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 101:17, s. 171803-:101, s. 171803-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an observation for ZZ -> l(+) l(-) l'(+) l'(-) (l, l' =e or mu) production in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV. Using 1.7 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, we observe three candidate events with an expected background of 0.14(-0.02)(+0.03) events. The significance of this observation is 5.3 standard deviations. The combination of D0 results in this channel, as well as in ZZ -> l(+) l(-) v (v) over bar yields a significance of 5.7 standard deviations and a combined cross section of sigma(ZZ) = 1.60 +/- 0.63(stat)(-0.17)(+0.16)(syst) pb.

  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 99:5, s. 052001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the first direct observation of the strange b baryon Xi(-)(b)(Xi) over bar (+)(b)). We reconstruct the decay Xi(-)(b)-->J/psi Xi(-), with J/psi-->mu(+)mu(-), and Xi(-)-->Lambda pi(-)-->p pi(-)pi(-) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. Using 1.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector, we observe 15.2 +/- 4.4(stat)(-0.4)(+1.9)(syst) Xi(-)(b) candidates at a mass of 5.774 +/- 0.011(stat) +/- 0.015(syst) GeV. The significance of the observed signal is 5.5 sigma, equivalent to a probability of 3.3 x 10(-8) of it arising from a background fluctuation. Normalizing to the decay Lambda(b)-->J/psi Lambda, we measure the relative rate sigma(Xi(-)(b))xB(Xi(-)(b)-->J/psi Xi)/ sigma(Lambda(b))xB(Lambda(b)-->J/psi Lambda) = 0.28 +/- 0.09(stat)(-0.08)(+0.09)(syst).

  • Measurement of the Angular and Lifetime Parameters of the Decays B-d(0) -> J/psi K*(0) and B-s(0) -> J/psi phi
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:3, s. 032001-:102, s. 032001-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of the linear polarization amplitudes and the strong relative phases that describe the flavor-untagged decays B-d(0) --> J/psi K*(0) and B-s(0) --> J/psi phi in the transversity basis. We also measure the mean lifetime (tau) over bar (s) of the B-s(0) mass eigenstates and the lifetime ratio (tau) over bar (s)/tau(d). The analyses are based on approximately 2.8 fb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector. From our measurements of the angular parameters we conclude that there is no evidence for a deviation from flavor SU( 3) symmetry for these decays and that the factorization assumption is not valid for the B-d(0) --> J/psi K*(0) decay.

  • Measurement of the differential cross section for the production of an isolated photon with associated jet in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 666:5, s. 435-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The process p (p) over bar -> gamma + jet + X is studied using 1.0 fb(-1) of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider at a center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV. Photons are reconstructed in the central rapidity region vertical bar y(gamma)vertical bar < 1.0 with transverse momenta in the range 30 < p(T)(gamma) < 400 GeV while jets are reconstructed in either the central vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 0.8 or forward 1.5 < vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 2.5 rapidity intervals with P-T(jet) > 15 GeV. The differential cross section d(3 sigma)/dp(T)(gamma) dy(gamma) dy(jet) is measured as a function of p(T)(gamma) in four regions, differing by the relative orientations of the photon and the jet in rapidity. Ratios between the differential cross sections in each region are also presented. Next-to-leading order QCD predictions using different parameterizations of parton distribution functions and theoretical scale choices are compared to the data. The predictions do not simultaneously describe the measured normalization and p(T)(gamma) dependence of the cross section in the four measured regions.

  • A combined search for the standard model Higgs boson at root S=1.96 TeV
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 663:1-2, s. 26-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present new results of the search for WH --> lvb (b) over bar production in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root S = 1.96 TeV, based on a dataset with integrated luminosity of 0.44 fb(-1). We combine these new results with previously published searches by the DO collaboration, for WH and ZH production analyzed in the E(T)b (b) over bar final state, for ZH (--> l(+)l(-)b (b) over bar) production, for WH (-->. WWW) production, and for H (--> W W) direct production. No signal-like excess is observed either in the W H analysis or in the combination of all D0 Higgs boson analyses. We set 95% C.L. (expected) upper limits on sigma(p (p) over bar --> WH) x B(H --> b (b) over bar) ranging from 1.6 (2.2) ph to 1.9 (3.3) pb for Higgs boson masses between 105 and 145 GeV, to be compared to the theoretical prediction of 0.13 pb for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with mass in m(H) = 115 GeV. After combination with the other DO Higgs boson searches, we obtain for in H = 115 GeV an observed (expected) limit 8.5 (12.1) times higher than the SM predicted Higgs boson production cross section. For m(H) = 160 GeV, the corresponding observed (expected) ratio is 10.2 (9.0).

  • Evidence for production of single top quarks
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; D:78, s. 012005-
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present first evidence for the production of single top quarks in the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider. The standard model predicts that the electroweak interaction can produce a top quark together with an antibottom quark or light quark, without the antiparticle top-quark partner that is always produced from strong-coupling processes. Top quarks were first observed in pair production in 1995, and since then, single top-quark production has been searched for in ever larger data sets. In this analysis, we select events from a 0.9 fb(-1) data set that have an electron or muon and missing transverse energy from the decay of a W boson from the top-quark decay, and two, three, or four jets, with one or two of the jets identified as originating from a b hadron decay. The selected events are mostly backgrounds such as W + jets and t (t) over bar events, which we separate from the expected signals using three multivariate analysis techniques: boosted decision trees, Bayesian neural networks, and matrix-element calculations. A binned likelihood fit of the signal cross section plus background to the data from the combination of the results from the three analysis methods gives a cross section for single top-quark production of sigma(p (p) over bar -> tb + X, tqb + X) = 4.7 +/- 1.3 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of signal is 0.014%, corresponding to a 3.6 standard deviation significance. The measured cross section value is compatible at the 10% level with the standard model prediction for electroweak top-quark production. We use the cross section measurement to directly determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element that describes the Wtb coupling and find vertical bar V(tb)f(1)(L)vertical bar = 1.31(-0.21)(+0.25), where f(1)(L) is a generic vector coupling. This model-independent measurement translates into 0.68 <= 1 at the 95% C.L. in the standard model.

  • Evidence for the Decay B-s(0)->(DsDs(*))-D-(*) and a Measurement of Delta Gamma(CP)(s)/Gamma(s)
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:9, s. 091801-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We search for the semi-inclusive process B-s(0)->(DsDs(*))-D-(*) using 2.8 fb(-1) of pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV recorded by the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We observe 26.6 +/- 8.4 signal events with a significance above background of 3.2 standard deviations yielding a branching ratio of B(B-s(0)->(DsDs(*))-D-(*))=0.035 +/- 0.010(stat.)+/- 0.011(syst.). Under certain theoretical assumptions, these double-charm final states saturate CP-even eigenstates in the B-s(0) decays resulting in a width difference of Delta Gamma(CP)(s)/Gamma(s)=0.072 +/- 0.021(stat.)+/- 0.022(syst.).
