  • The Laser calibration of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter during the LHC run 1

    • This article describes the Laser calibration system of the ATLAS hadronic Tile Calorimeter that has been used during the run 1 of the LHC. First, the stability of the system associated readout electronics is studied. It is found to be stable with variations smaller than 0.6 %. Then, the method developed to compute the calibration constants, to correct for the variations of the gain of the calorimeter photomultipliers, is described. These constants were determined with a statistical uncertainty of 0.3 % and a systematic uncertainty of 0.2 % for the central part of the calorimeter and 0.5 % for the end-caps. Finally, the detection and correction of timing mis-configuration of the Tile Calorimeter using the Laser system are also presented.

    • The synthesis of two molecular iron complexes, a dinuclear iron(III,III) complex and a nonanuclear iron complex, based on the di-nucleating ligand 2,2-(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazole-4-carboxylic acid) is described. The two iron complexes were found to drive the oxidation of water by the one-electron oxidant [Ru(bpy)(3)](3+).

    • ObjectiveThis qualitative study explored barriers and enabling factors to the implementation of an oral hygiene protocol in nursing homes. BackgroundOral health care in nursing homes in Flanders (Belgium) is inadequate. Materials and methodsQualitative data were obtained from nurses employed in 13 nursing homes involved in two randomised controlled trials in Flanders-Belgium. Data were collected by focus group and face-to-face interviews during April 2005 and December 2009. All transcripts were analysed with support of NVivo 8 (Version 2008). Transcripts were intuitively analysed in a two-step method. ResultsMost revealed barriers were consistent with previous findings in the literature. Newly reported barriers were respect for residents' self-determination, experience based oral health care by nurses, residents' oral health status and nurses' inability to notice residents' oral health status. Demand-driven oral health care was found to be a strong enabling factor. ConclusionThe integration of oral health care into day-to-day care seems to be a major problem due to a multitude of barriers. In future implementation innovations in oral health care an a priori assessment of influencing factors is recommended.

  • A low-gluten diet induces changes in the intestinal microbiome of healthy Danish adults

    • © 2018, The Author(s). Adherence to a low-gluten diet has become increasingly common in parts of the general population. However, the effects of reducing gluten-rich food items including wheat, barley and rye cereals in healthy adults are unclear. Here, we undertook a randomised, controlled, cross-over trial involving 60 middle-aged Danish adults without known disorders with two 8-week interventions comparing a low-gluten diet (2 g gluten per day) and a high-gluten diet (18 g gluten per day), separated by a washout period of at least six weeks with habitual diet (12 g gluten per day). We find that, in comparison with a high-gluten diet, a low-gluten diet induces moderate changes in the intestinal microbiome, reduces fasting and postprandial hydrogen exhalation, and leads to improvements in self-reported bloating. These observations suggest that most of the effects of a low-gluten diet in non-coeliac adults may be driven by qualitative changes in dietary fibres.

    • We studied variation at the class II gene of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in Natterjack toad populations (Bufo [Epidalea] calamita) on islands off the west coast of Sweden. These isolated populations have previously been shown to exhibit low levels of neutral genetic variation. On seven investigated islands we found only two different MHC alleles, indicating that the genetic variation at this locus is also low. The two alleles were found in all populations, although in one population there was only a single heterozygous individual. The Swedish toads showed similar low levels of MHC variation as revealed by previously published data from populations in northern Europe. We did not find a correlation between MHC and neutral genetic variation (as determined by AFLP). However, our findings show that reduced genetic variation in the Swedish Natterjack toads is not restricted to neutral markers, but is likewise reflected at the MHC.

  • Continuous versus pulsating flow boiling. Experimental comparison, visualization, and statistical analysis

    • This experimental study investigates an active method for flow boiling heat transfer enhancement by means of fluid flow pulsation. The hypothesis is that pulsations increase the flow boiling heat transfer by means of better bulk fluid mixing, increased wall wetting, and flow-regime destabilization. The fluid pulsations are introduced by a flow modulating expansion device and are compared with continuous flow by a stepper-motor expansion valve in terms of time-averaged heat transfer coefficient. The cycle time ranges from 1 to 9 s for the pulsations. The time-averaged heat transfer coefficients are reduced from transient measurements immediately downstream of the expansion valves at low vapor qualities. The results show that the pulsations improve the time-averaged heat transfer coefficient by 3.2% on average at low cycle time (1 to 2 s), whereas the pulsations may reduce the time-averaged heat transfer coefficient by as much as 8% at high heat flux (q >= 35 kW/m(2)) and cycle time (8 s). The latter reduction is attributed to a significant dry-out that occurs when the flow modulating expansion valve is closed. Additionally, the effect of fluid flow pulsations is found to be statistically significant, disregarding the lowest heat flux measurements.

    • This experimental study investigated the application of fluid flow pulsations for in-tube flow boiling heat transfer enhancement in an 8 mm smooth round tube made of copper. The fluid flow pulsations were introduced by a flow modulating expansion device and were compared with continuous flow generated by a stepper-motor expansion valve in terms of the time-averaged heat transfer coefficient. The cycle time ranged from 1 s to 7 s for the pulsations, the time-averaged refrigerant mass flux ranged from 50 kg m(-2) s(-1) to 194 kg m(-2) and the time-averaged heat flux ranged from 1.1 kW m(-2) to 30.6 kW m(-2). The time-averaged heat transfer coefficients were reduced from transient measurements immediately downstream of the expansion valves with 2 K and 20 K subcooling upstream, resulting in inlet vapor qualities at 0.05 and 0.18, respectively, and covered the saturated flow boiling range up to the dry-out inception. Averaged results of the considered range of vapor qualities, refrigerant mass flux and heat flux showed that the pulsations at low cycle time (1 s) improved the time-averaged heat transfer coefficients by 5.6% and 2.2% for the low and high subcooling, respectively. However, the pulsations at high cycle time (7 s) reduced the time-averaged heat transfer coefficients by 1.8% and 2.3% for the low and high subcooling, respectively, due to significant dry-out when the flow-modulating expansion valve was closed. Furthermore, the flow pulsations were visualized by high-speed camera to assist in understanding the time-periodic flow regimes and the effect they had on the heat transfer performance.

  • Effects of an Internet intervention (Deprexis) on severe depression symptoms : Randomized controlled trial

    • BackgroundStudies have shown that certain Internet interventions can help alleviate depression. However, many such interventions contain personal support elements, making it difficult to ascertain whether the program or the support drives the effects. Studies are needed to investigate whether Internet interventions contribute to symptom reduction even when they are delivered without personal support, and even among severely depressed individuals who often receive other forms of treatment.ObjectiveThis randomized controlled trial aimed to examine the effect of an Internet intervention that was deployed without personal support (“Deprexis”) among adults with initially severe depression symptoms.MethodsAdults recruited from a range of sources who had exceeded the threshold for severe depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 15) in a pre-screening assessment and met inclusion criteria were randomized (N = 163) to the intervention (3 months program access; n = 78) or care-as-usual/waitlist control (n = 85). A diagnostic screening interview was administered by telephone at baseline to all participants. Online assessments were administered at baseline, 3 months (post-treatment), and 6 months (follow-up). The main outcome was the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) between baseline and post-treatment.ResultsEighty-two percent of randomized participants were reached for the post-treatment assessment. Results for the intention-to-treat (ITT) sample showed significant intervention effects on depression reduction between baseline and post-treatment (linear mixed model [MM], F1,155.6 = 9.00, p < .01, for the time by condition interaction), with a medium between-group effect size, Cohen's d = 0.57 (95% CI: 0.22–0.92). Group differences in depression severity at follow-up were marginally significant in the ITT sample, t (119) = 1.83, p = 0.07, and smaller than at post-treatment (PHQ-9, d = 0.33, 95% CI: − 0.03–0.69). The number needed to treat (NNT) at post-treatment was 5, with 38% of participants in the intervention group achieving response (at least 50% PHQ-9 symptom change, plus post-treatment score < 10), compared to 17% in the control group, p < 0.01. Effects on secondary outcomes, including anxiety, health-related quality of life, and somatic symptoms, were not significant, with the exception of significant effects on anxiety reduction in PP analyses. Early ratings of program helpfulness/alliance (after 3 weeks) predicted pre–post depression reduction, controlling for baseline severity and early symptom change.ConclusionsThese results replicate and extend previous findings by showing that Deprexis can facilitate symptomatic improvement over 3 months and, perhaps to a lesser degree, up until 6 months among adults with initially severe depression.

  • Whole grain-rich diet reduces body weight and systemic low-grade inflammation without inducing major changes of the gut microbiome: A randomised cross-over trial

    • Objective T o investigate whether a whole grain diet alters the gut microbiome and insulin sensitivity, as well as biomarkers of metabolic health and gut functionality. Design 60 Danish adults at risk of developing metabolic syndrome were included in a randomised cross-over trial with two 8-week dietary intervention periods comprising whole grain diet and refined grain diet, separated by a washout period of =6 weeks. The response to the interventions on the gut microbiome composition and insulin sensitivity as well on measures of glucose and lipid metabolism, gut functionality, inflammatory markers, anthropometry and urine metabolomics were assessed. Results 50 participants completed both periods with a whole grain intake of 179±50 g/day and 13±10 g/day in the whole grain and refined grain period, respectively. Compliance was confirmed by a difference in plasma alkylresorcinols (p<0.0001). Compared with refined grain, whole grain did not significantly alter glucose homeostasis and did not induce major changes in the faecal microbiome. Also, breath hydrogen levels, plasma short-chain fatty acids, intestinal integrity and intestinal transit time were not affected. The whole grain diet did, however, compared with the refined grain diet, decrease body weight (p<0.0001), serum inflammatory markers, interleukin (IL)-6 (p=0.009) and C-reactive protein (p=0.003). The reduction in body weight was consistent with a reduction in energy intake, and IL-6 reduction was associated with the amount of whole grain consumed, in particular with intake of rye. Conclusion C ompared with refined grain diet, whole grain diet did not alter insulin sensitivity and gut microbiome but reduced body weight and systemic lowgrade inflammation.
