  • Temporal trends of HLA genotype frequencies of type 1 diabetes patients in Sweden from 1986 to 2005 suggest altered risk
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Acta Diabetologica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0940-5429 .- 1432-5233. ; 45:4, s. 231-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to compare the frequency of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes in 1-18-year-old patients with type 1 diabetes newly diagnosed in 1986-1987 (n = 430), 1996-2000 (n = 342) and in 2003-2005 (n = 171). We tested the hypothesis that the HLA DQ genotype distribution changes over time. Swedish type 1 diabetes patients and controls were typed for HLA using polymerase chain reaction amplification and allele specific probes for DQ A1* and B1* alleles. The most common type 1 diabetes HLA DQA1*-B1*genotype 0501-0201/0301-0302 was 36% (153/430) in 1986-1987 and 37% (127/342) in 1996-2000, but decreased to 19% (33/171) in 2003-2005 (P \ 0.0001). The 0501-0201/0501-0201 genotype increased from 1% in 1986-1987 to 7% in 1996-2000 (P = 0.0047) and to 5% in 2003-2005 (P > 0.05). This study in 1-18-year-old Swedish type 1 diabetes patients supports the notion that there is a temporal change in HLA risk.

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm and the impact of infectious burden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-2165 .- 1078-5884. ; 36:3, s. 292-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Little is known about the biological processes causing aortic aneurysm rupture. Chronic Chlomydophila pneumoniae infection has been suggested as a possible contributing factor to the development and expansion of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The importance of infection in AAA may be related to the previous pathogen burden, that is, the number of significant titres of antibodies against infectious pathogens rather than to single infectious agents. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between infectious burden and AAA rupture. Methods: In a case-control study, 119 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm and 36 matched controls without aneurysm were prospectively investigated for specific. IgG class antibodies against C. pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, Cytomegalovirus, and Herpes simplex virus. Results: Patients with ruptured AAA have similar levels of pathogen burden as patients with nonruptured electively operated AAA, small AAA, and controls without aneurysm. Conclusion: The present study fails to demonstrate a connection between infectious burden and abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture. (C) 2008 European Society for Vascular Surgery. • Recent Progress in the VLBI2010 Development
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: in Proceedings of the 2007 IAG General Assembly, Perugia, Italy, July 2-13, 2007, ed. M. Sideris, Springer. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 0939-9585. - 9783540854258 ; 133:Part 5, s. 833-840
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From October 2003 to September 2005, the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS) examined current and future requirements for geodetic VLBI, including all components from antennas to analysis. IVS Working Group 3 "VLBI 2010", which was tasked with this effort, concluded with recommendations for a new generation of VLBI systems. These recommendations were based on the goals of achieving 1mm measurement accuracy on global baselines, performing continuous measurements for time series of station positions and Earth orientation parameters, and reaching a turnaround time from measurement to initial geodetic results of less than 24 h. To realize these recommendations and goals, along with the need for low cost of construction and operation, requires a complete examination of all aspects of geodetic VLBI including equipment, processes, and observational strategies. Hence, in October 2005, the IVS VLBI2010 Committee (V2C) commenced work on defining the VLBI2010 system specifications. In this paper we give a summary of the recent progress of the VLBI2010 project. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

  • Can the early reduction of tumour markers predict outcome in surgically treated sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Langenbeck's archives of surgery / Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Chirurgie. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1435-2443. ; 393:5, s. 699-703
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) have a variable clinical course. Our aim was to analyse the reduction of tumour markers after thyroidectomy with meticulous dissection and relate it to clinical outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients with palpable sporadic MTC underwent thyroidectomy with central and uni- or bilateral modified radical neck dissection; three were subjected to mediastinal dissection. Basal (b-) and stimulated (s-) calcitonin (CT) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-levels were measured before and 6-8 weeks after primary surgery, and the reduction of these tumour markers was determined. RESULTS: Median CT (b- and s-) were markedly reduced after surgery (98.5% and 99.1%, respectively), and CEA decreased 11 times. CT (b-) fell >99% in seven patients after surgery; in these and four additional patients, CT (s-) showed a similar reduction. During follow-up (median 52.5 months), two patients (stages IV B and C) died of MTC; they had <95% reduction of CT. Four patients (stage IV A) are alive with verified metastases. Eight patients (one stage III, seven stage IV A) are alive with hypercalcitoninemia. Five stages I-III patients and one stage IV A patient are disease-free. CONCLUSIONS: Thyroidectomy and meticulous dissection caused a pronounced reduction of tumour markers. A postoperative reduction of CT (s-) >/=97% seems to be associated with less aggressive clinical course, while CEA had lower predictive value.

  • Coulomb excitation of the N=50 nucleus Zn-80
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1012, s. 291-295 453
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron rich Zinc isotopes, including the N=50 nucleus Zn-80, were produced and post-accelerated at the Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN). Low-energy Coulomb excitation was induced on these isotopes after post-acceleration, yielding B(E2) strengths to the first excited 2(+) states. For the first time, an excited state in Zn-80 was observed and the 2(1)(+) state in Zn-78 was established. The measured B(E2,2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+)) values are compared to two sets of large scale shell model calculations. Both calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics for the full Zinc isotopic chain. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus Ni-78.

  • Overview of the biosphere-aerosol-cloud-climate interactions (BACCI) studies
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Tellus. Series B: Chemical and Physical Meteorology. - : Stockholm University Press. - 0280-6509 .- 1600-0889. ; 60:3, s. 300-317
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Here we present research methods and results obtained by the Nordic Centre of Excellence Biosphere-Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interactions (BACCI) between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2007. The centre formed an integrated attempt to understand multiple, but interlinked, biosphere-atmosphere interactions applying inter and multidisciplinary approaches in a coherent manner. The main objective was to study the life cycle of aerosol particles and their importance on climate change. The foundation in BACCI was a thorough understanding of physical, meteorological, chemical and ecophysiological processes, providing a unique possibility to study biosphere-aerosol-cloud-climate interactions. Continuous measurements of atmospheric concentrations and fluxes of aerosol particles and precursors and, CO2/aerosol trace gas interactions in different field stations (e.g. SMEAR) were supported by models of particle thermodynamics, transport and dynamics, atmospheric chemistry, boundary layer meteorology and forest growth. The main progress was related to atmospheric new particle formation, existence of clusters, composition of nucleation mode aerosol particles, chemical precursors of fresh aerosol particles, the contribution of biogenic aerosol particles on the global aerosol load, transport, transformation and deposition of aerosol particles, thermodynamics related to aerosol particles and cloud droplets, and the microphysics and chemistry of cloud droplet formation.
