  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book introduces and summarises the Building Block Approach to Religious Studies that has been developed and proposed by professor Ann Taves (University of Santa Barbara) and associate professor Egil Asprem (Stockholm University). The book opens with a lengthy introduction by Taves and Asprem that describes the Building Block Approach, explains how and why they developed it, and what it can be used for in the study of religions. The introduction by Taves and Asprem is followed by seven responses, comments and critiques that identify pros and cons of the approach suggested by Taves and Asprem. The book ends with a response by Taves and Asprem. The overall aim of the book is to provide a short and user-friendly introduction and critical discussion of the building block approach to religious studies that can be used by undergraduate, graduate and more advanced scholars in the field of religious studies. The aim is to provide a critical primer that addresses how and why scholars of religions should pay attention to the building block approach to religious studies.

  • The complexity of kidney disease and diagnosing it - Cystatin C, selective glomerular hypofiltration syndromes and proteome regulation.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Internal Medicine. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0954-6820 .- 1365-2796. ; 293:3, s. 293-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Estimation of kidney function is often part of daily clinical practice, mostly done by using the endogenous GFR-markers creatinine or cystatin C. A recommendation to use both markers in parallel in 2010 has resulted in new knowledge concerning the pathophysiology of kidney disorders by identification of a new set of kidney disorders, selective glomerular hypofiltration syndromes. These syndromes, connected to strong increases in mortality and morbidity, are characterised by a selective reduction in the glomerular filtration of 5-30 kDa molecules, such as cystatin C, compared to the filtration of small molecules < 1kDa dominating the glomerular filtrate e.g., water, urea, creatinine. At least two types of such disorders, shrunken or elongated pore syndrome, are possible according to the pore model for glomerular filtration. Selective glomerular hypofiltration syndromes are prevalent in investigated populations, and patients with these syndromes often display normal measured GFR or creatinine-based GFR-estimates. The syndromes are characterised by proteomic changes promoting the development of atherosclerosis, indicating antibodies and specific receptor-blocking substances as possible new treatment modalities. Presently, the KDIGO guidelines for diagnosing kidney disorders do not recommend cystatin C as a general marker of kidney function and will therefore not allow the identification of a considerable number of patients with selective glomerular hypofiltration syndromes. Furthermore, as cystatin C is uninfluenced by muscle mass, diet or variations in tubular secretion and cystatin C-based GFR-estimation equations do not require controversial race or sex terms, it is obvious that cystatin C should be a part of future KDIGO guidelines.

  • Media & Mediation in the Eighteenth Century
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While eighteenth-century print media in essence rested on the same technical apparatus as previous centuries – letterpress printing, woodcuts, and intaglio prints – the growth in quantity created a media revolution. The effect was a qualitative shift in terms of literacy, growth of newspapers, the spread of images, and distribution of knowledge, but also of misinformation and propaganda. In this volume eight scholars investigate various aspects of media and mediation in the history, culture, and politics of the eighteenth century.

  • An Industrial Revolution in an Indigenous Landscape : The Copper Extraction of the Early Modern Torne River Valley in its Global Context
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Fennoscandia Archaeologica. - 0781-7126. ; XXXVII, s. 61-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During a period of 40 years in the second half of the 17th century, a process of industrialization was initialized in the northern part of the Torne River valley, northern Sweden. The industrialization was the result of global demand for copper and brass, but its practice was a local and regional encounter between different groups of people with a manifold of identities, languages, economic, and social backgrounds. The modern industrial production units, some 100–150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, created spaces which functioned as contact zones for Indigenous Sámi and Finnish inhabitants, Swedish and Dutch workers. Local knowledge was pivotal for the establish-ment of the industries. The making of local spaces, closely connected with international networks of people, capital, and knowledge, affected the social and spatial everyday practices at the works and in the surrounding lands. This paper is based on field surveys conducted at five mining and metal works sites in the Torne River valley and a set of maps and drawings from 1660, depicting the structure of the mines and metal works in a Sámi-Finnish landscape. The results are dis-cussed in a global historical archaeological context, connecting the metal extraction of Northern Scandinavia with global hunger for brass and copper.
