  • Body composition in patients with Alzheimer's disease and healthy controls
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical and Experimental Gerontology. - 0192-1193. ; 14:1, s. 17-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Alzheimer's disease (AD), decreased physical activity and nutritional problems are parts of the natural course with probable implications on body composition. Body fat and lean body mass were measured with a bioelectrical impedance method in 25 women who had AD according to the criteria of NINCDS- ADRDA and in 63 health age-matched controls. The patients with AD had 9.5 kg lower body weight (p<0.01), due to almost 4.0 kg lower body fat and 6.0 kg lower lean body mass (p<0.001). This might imply a higher risk for morbidity and mortality. Body weight and lean body mass decreased with age in AD patients but not in the healthy control women. In the control group, the unmarried women had more than 13 kg lower body weight and 9 kg lower body fat than the mean values of all other marital status groups (p<0.01). The maintenance of lean body mass in the very healthy old indicate the possibilities for physical activity.

  • Processing and characterisation of an etched groove Permeable
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Physica scripta. T. - 0281-1847. ; T54, s. 56-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Permeable Base Transistor (PBT) is generally considered as an interesting device for high speed applications. PBTs have been fabricated on Silicon and Gallium Arsenide by a number of groups. In this paper we reported on the fabrication of an etched groove PBT structure on 6H-SiC using Ti as contact metal for all electrodes. The devices have been characterised by DC-measurements. The transistors show the normal IV-characteristics for a such a device except for a parasitic series diode at the drain electrode. The breakdown voltage of the gate-drain diode is generally as high as around 60 V even without passivation of the sidewalls of the grooves.

  • Process Optimisation and Characterisation of PBT structures
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Physica scripta. T. - 0281-1847. ; T54, s. 226-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Permeable Base Transistor (PBT) is considered to be a high frequency device with simulated fT and fmax values in the order of 100 GHz. In this work we present several PBT devices in silicon. The fabrication process steps have been developed and optimised in order to meet the demands of a future integration in a standard CMOS processing. Cobalt disilicide is used for the emitter metallization and base metallisation in order to form a good Schottky contact. The important issues of a fabrication process reliability and controllability are discussed in this paper. The process steps had been analysed by standard analysis methods. Electrical (DC) characterisation of the devices has been performed. The obtained results are in a good agreement with the 2D simulations.

  • Buried Cobalt Silicide Layers in Silicon Created by Wafer Bonding
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Electrochemical Society. - : The Electrochemical Society. - 0013-4651 .- 1945-7111. ; 141:10, s. 2829-2833
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A buried conductive layer in silicon has been created using wafer bonding technique, with a cobalt interfacial layer.Co-coated silicon wafers were brought into contact with either similar or uncoated wafers at room temperature. CoSi2 wasthen formed through a solid-phase reaction, during an anneal at 700 to 900°C. A 700 Å buried CoSi2-layer, with a resistivityof approximately 21 µ cm, was achieved. Good adhesion, as measured by tensile strength testing, between the wafers wasachieved. Transmission electron microscopic investigations (Co-coated wafer bonded to bare silicon) showed that thesilicide has not grown into the opposite wafer, and that an amorphous layer exists between the silicide and the siliconsurface. The presence of such a layer has been confirmed by electrical characterization.

  • Pheromonal secretions from glands on the 5th abdominal sternite of hydropsychid and rhyacophilid caddisflies (Trichoptera)
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical Ecology. - 0098-0331. ; 20:1, s. 153-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extracts of different body parts of adult Trichoptera were tested for electrophysiological activity. Extracts of the IVth and Vth abdominal sternites of female Hydropsyche angustipennis, Rhyacophila nubila, and R. fasciata, containing a paired exocrine gland, elicited significant electroan-tennographic responses when tested on conspecific male antennae. The paired gland occurs also in males of all the species, and in H. angustipennis, extracts from males were more active than female extracts when tested on male antennae. Female and male extracts from all species were analyzed by gas chromatography with simultaneous flame ionization and electroantennographic detection (EAD). EAD-active peaks in female extracts, stimulating male antennae, were identified in H. angustipennis as nonan-2-one; and in R. nubila and R. fasciata as heptan-2-one, heptan-2-ol, nonan-2-one, and nonan-2-ol. EAD-active components from male H. angustipennis stimulating male antennae were octan-2-one, nonan-2-one (major peak), (Z)-6-nonen-2-one, decan-2-one, and a methylbranched decan-2-one. Female extracts and synthetic mixtures of compounds identified from female H. angustipennis and R. fasciata were tested for attractivity in the field. High catches with control traps obscured the results, but a synthetic mixture of the four identified compounds was significantly attractive and not different from female extracts for attracting male R. fasciata. In H. angustipennis, a synthetic six-component male blend, in which nonan-2-one was the major component, attracted significant numbers of male and female H. angustipennis. Extracts of male R. nubila and R. fasciata contained acetophenone and hexanoic and octanoic acids but did not have any electrophysiological or behavioral activity on either male or female antennae of conspecifics. The occurrence of a female sex pheromone in Rhyacophila and an aggregation pheromone in Hydropsyche corresponds to earlier described differences in mating behaviors in the Rhyacophilidae and Hydropsychidae.

  • The development of an assay for human neutrophil lipocalin (HNL)--to be used as a specific marker of neutrophil activity in vivo and vitro
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Immunological Methods. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-1759. ; 171:2, s. 245-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Human neutrophil lipocalin (HNL) is a newly discovered protein from human neutrophil secretory granules. A double-antibody radioimmunoassay (RIA) was developed for the measurement of HNL in various body fluids and its high specificity was confirmed by the absence of cross-reaction with other granulocyte granule proteins. The RIA measures HNL within the range of 4-256 micrograms/l. The intra- and interassay coefficients of variation were less than 6% and 10%, respectively. When HNL was added to serum samples full recovery was obtained. Sera and plasma from 100 apparently healthy individuals revealed a mean level of 78.40 micrograms/l (range 37.95-190.87 micrograms/l) in serum and a mean level of 50.65 micrograms/l (range 30.51-105.8 micrograms/l) in EDTA-plasma. The distribution of HNL after gel filtration indicated that HNL exists mainly in two major forms, dimer and monomer. This, in addition to the excellent recovery, suggests that these major forms of HNL do not bind to compounds in serum or plasma that would interfere with the assay. The high specificity, sensitivity, reproducibility and accuracy of the present assay should facilitate the measurement of HNL in blood and other body fluids.
