    • The Radioactive Beam Experiment REX-ISOLDE [1-3] is a pilot experiment at ISOLDE (CERN) testing the new concept of post acceleration of radioactive ion beams by using charge breeding of the ions in a high charge state ion source and the efficient acceleration of the highly charged ions in a short LINAC using modern ion accelerator structures. In order to prepare the ions for the experiments singly charged radioactive ions from the on-line mass separator ISOLDE will be cooled and bunched in a Penning trap, charge bred in an electron beam ion source (EBIS) and finally accelerated in the LINAC. The LINAC consists of a radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator, which accelerates the ions up to 0.3 MeV/u, an interdigital H-type (IH) structure with a final energy between 1.1 and 1.2 MeV/u and three seven gap resonators, which allow the variation of the final energy. With an energy of the radioactive beams between 0.8 MeV/u and 2.2 MeV/u a wide range of experiments in the field of nuclear spectroscopy, astrophysics and solid state physics will be addressed by REX-ISOLDE.

    • A rotational band with seven gamma -ray transitions between states with spin 2 (h) over bar and 16 (h) over bar has been observed in the doubly magic, self-conjugate nucleus Ca-40(20)20. The measured transition quadrupole moment of 1.80(-0.29)(+0.39)eb indicates a superdeformed shape with a deformation beta (2) = 0.59(-0.07)(+0.11). The features of this band are explained by cranked relativistic mean field calculations to arise from an 8-particle 8-hole excitation.

    • Photoneutron production on the nuclei of high-Z components of medical accelerator heads can lead to a significant secondary dose during a course of bremsstrahlung radiotherapy, However, a quantitative evaluation of secondary neutron dose requires improved data on the photoreaction yields. These have been measured as a function of photon energy, neutron energy and neutron angle for W-nat, using tagged photons at the MAX-Lab photonuclear facility in Sweden. This work presents neutron yields for W-nat(gamma, n) and compares these with the predictions of the Monte Carlo code MCNP-GN, developed specifically to simulate photoneutron production at medical accelerators.

    • The transition quadrupole moments Q(t) for the superdeformed band in Ca-40 have been determined through thin-target Doppler-shift attenuation analyses. A best-fit value of Q(t)=1.30+/-0.05 e b is obtained when a single value is assumed for the entire band. Fitting separate quadrupole moments for in-band transitions decaying from the high-spin states and the presumably admixed low-spin states results in Q(t)(high)= 1.81(-0.26)(+0.41) e b and Q(t)(low)=1.18(-0.05)(+0.06) e b, respectively. Q(t) values extracted for individual transitions in a Doppler-broadened line-shape analysis also indicate smaller Q(t) values at lower spins. These results are consistent with the interpretation of this band as an eight-particle-eight-hole superdeformed band with a significant admixture of less-collective configurations at low spins.

  • Insulin-like growth factors as diagnostic tools in growth hormone deficiency during childhood and adolescence: the KIGS experience

    • Growth hormone (GH) deficiency in children covers a spectrum of disorders involving an impairment in GH secretion and a clinical syndrome characterized by permanent stunting of growth. Ascertaining impairments in GH secretion directly is complex, especially if GH deficiency (GHD) is isolated and not caused by congenital or acquired pituitary defects or genetic abnormalities. It has been established that the concentrations of GH-dependent peptides, such as insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and IGF-binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3), are low in patients with GHD. Their levels are, however, also influenced by a multitude of factors, such as age, gender, height, liver function, nutritional status and other hormones. In addition, the type of complex formed, e.g. either binary or ternary, may influence the measurements of IGFs and their binding proteins. Therefore, levels of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 are generally lower in short children compared with age-matched norms. The reported diagnostic value of sub-normal basal levels of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 is, in terms of sensitivity and specificity, approximately 70%. Thus, definite proof of GHD can only be achieved by means of GH measurements. As the diagnosis of GHD is somewhat unlikely if IGF testing shows normal values, it is clearly advantageous to schedule these tests as part of the initial diagnostic work-up in short children, as their implementation is not only practical but also inexpensive. The Pfizer International Growth Database (KIGS) analysis of IGF-I (n = 2,750) and IGFBP-3 (n = 1,300) levels in children with idiopathic GHD shows that these two parameters are now firmly embedded in diagnostic strategies around the world.
