    • The PHENIX detector is designed to perform a broad study of A-A, p-A, and p-p collisions to investigate nuclear matter under extreme conditions. A wide variety of probes, sensitive to all timescales, are used to study systematic variations with species and energy as well as to measure the spin structure of the nucleon. Designing for the needs of the heavy-ion and polarized-proton programs has produced a detector with unparalleled capabilities. PHENIX measures electron and muon pairs, photons, and hadrons with excellent energy and momentum resolution. The detector consists of a large number of subsystems that are discussed in other papers in this volume. The overall design parameters of the detector are presented. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.     • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin with both genetic and environmental risk factors. Here we describe the creation of a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) map spanning 900-1200 kb of chromosome 3q21, which had been previously recognized as containing a psoriasis susceptibility locus, PSORS5. We genotyped 644 individuals, from 195 Swedish psoriatic families, for 19 polymorphisms. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) between marker and disease was assessed using the transmission/disequilibrium test (TDT). In the TDT analysis, alleles of three of these SNPs showed significant association with disease (P<0.05). A 160-kb interval encompassing these three SNPs was sequenced, and a coding sequence consisting of 13 exons was identified. The predicted protein shares 30-40% homology with the family of cation/chloride cotransporters. A five-marker haplotype spanning the 3' half of this gene is associated with psoriasis to a P value of 3.8<10(-5). We have called this gene SLC12A8, coding for a member of the solute carrier family 12 proteins. It belongs to a class of genes that were previously unrecognized as playing a role in psoriasis pathogenesis.

  • Resonant scattering in delta-doped heterostructures

    • We demonstrate the utility of resonant x-ray scattering in probing the structure of doping layers at a heterostructure interface. The positions of germanium layers inserted at the interface of a silicon epitaxial film assert a strong influence of the phase of the scattered intensity along the crystal truncation rods. The phase of the scattering, and hence the internal structure of the layers, can be determined conveniently by analyzing its energy dependence in the vicinity of the Germanium absorption edge at 11.103 keV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    • Bites by the Indian cobra (Naja naja naja) are common in India and Sri Lanka because of its close association with humans. Cobra venoms are complex and contain several toxic components, including neurotoxins that cause post-synaptic neuromuscular blockade with respiratory paralysis and even death. Bites may also cause extensive local necrosis by mechanisms not fully elucidated. Although no significant coagulopathy has been reported, N.n. naja venom can form blood clots in vitro by activating prothrombin as demonstrated by thrombin-specific chromogenic substrate. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrates that the clots formed by venom lack the thin fibrin strands of normal blood clots formed by thromboplastin or glass contact. Rheometry shows that clots formed by venom have abnormally low elasticity over an extended period and then, as the platelets contract, a retarded and more feeble increase in elasticity. Purified N.n. naja venom PLA2 inhibits platelet aggregation in PRP and explains the decreased clot retraction and retarded and compromised elasticity build up. The present study shows that the PLA 2 and the prothrombin activator from N.n. naja venom have effects on haemostasis and blood clotting, although such effects are not observed systemically in envenomed humans. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
