  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Effect of vitamin E on autolysis and sporulation of Aspergillus nidulans
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology. - 1559-0291. ; 118:1-3, s. 337-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The morphologic and physiologic effects of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, on the autolysis and sporulation of Aspergillus nidulans FGSC26 were studied. In carbon-depleted submerged cultures, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulated in the cells and, concomitantly, progressing autolysis was observed, which was characterized by decreasing dry cell masses and pellet diameters as well as by increasing extracellular chitinase activities. Vitamin E supplemented at a concentration of 1g/L hindered effectively the intracellular accumulation of ROS, the autolytic loss of biomass, the disintegration of pellets, and the release of chitinase activities. In surface cultures, vitamin E inhibited autolysis of both A. nidulans FGSC26 and a loss-of-function FlbA autolytic phenotype mutant. In addition, supplementation of the culture medium with this antioxidant also had a negative effect on the sporulation of strain FGSC26 and the FadA(G203R) hypersporulating phenotype mutant. These results suggest that accumulation of ROS was involved in the initiation of both sporulation and autolysis in this filamentous fungus, but that FadA/FlbA signaling was not involved in this vitamin E-dependent regulation. Vitamin E can be recommended as a supplement in fermentations in which the disintegration of pellets and gross autolysis should be avoided.

  • Analysis of 3-D surfaces in forming dies and sheet metal - Today and tomorrow
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Recent Advances in Manufacture and Use of Tools and Dies and Stamping of Steel Sheets. ; , s. 29-53
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of surface roughness on production of steel sheet are critically reviewed. New developments in the measurement and characterisation of surface roughness seem likely to improve our understanding of its effect on sheet metal production. Much useful information can still be acquired by 2D techniques but increasingly the evidence is that sheet metal surface roughness is better measured and characterised by 3D methods. The facility for direct surface visualization in 3D is shown to be particularly helpful. When measuring 3D the measurement area size and sampling space are critical and for evaluation the filtering of surface data into roughness and waviness is more complicated than for 2D profiles.

  • On-line estimation of nitrification and denitrification capacity at Avedøre wastewater treatment plant
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, on-line nitrification and denitrification rate estimation in an alternating wastewater treatment plant is discussed. The nitrification/denitrification rates are estimated on-line using continuous measurements of ammonia and nitrate. From the rate estimates, the plant capacity is derived. This information is useful in various ways: for early warning to prevent severe disturbances such as nitrification inhibition; for optimising phase lengths and distribution of the phases in the alternating operation; and directly for the control system of the treatment plant. The estimation is based on the derivatives of the measurement signals combined with a simplified model of nitrogen dynamics of the plant. In the paper, we show examples of a successful application of the estimation methods to full-scale operation of the treatment plant and are today incorporated in the control system.

  • Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma, Aggressive Fibromatosis and Benign Fibrous Tumors Express mRNA for the Metalloproteinase Inducer EMMPRIN and the Metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MT1-MMP
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Sarcoma. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1357-714X .- 1369-1643. ; 5:3, s. 143-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose:Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) has been shown to stimulate fibroblasts to production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs comprise a family of proteolytic enzymes implicated in the degradation of extracellular matrix which has been proposed to be one of the essential steps in tumor invasion and metastases. In the present study we investigated the expression and location of mRNAs forEMMPRIN, matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), and membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP) in mesenchymal tumors with different tendencies to recur or metastasize.Subjects:Eight malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH), seven aggressive fibromatosis (AF), and six benign fibrous tumors (BF).Method:The mRNA-expression ofEMMPRIN,MMP-2andMT1-MMPwere studied using mRNAin situhybridization technique. Results:The mRNA-expression ofEMMPRIN,MMP-2andMT1-MMPrespectively were found at varying frequency and level in all tumor types. The mRNAs corresponding toEMMPRINandMMP-2were seen in neoplastic cells as well as in endothelial cells both inside and outside the tumor pseudo-capsule, whereasMT1-MMPwas seen only within the tumors. The estimated mRNA levels ofEMMPRINandMMP-2covariated significantly. Overall, the highest expression was found in the MFH tumors and the lowest levels in the BF tumors.Discussion:These findings suggest that the MMP-inducerEMMPRINand the extracellular matrix degrading system involving the metalloproteinasesMMP-2andMT1-MMPis frequently activated in mesenchymal tumors. The covariation betweenEMMPRINandMMP-2support previous findings that EMMPRIN may be an inducer of MMP-2. The high levels ofMMP-2mRNA in MFH indicate a relationship between the proteolytic activity ofMMP-2and the tumor aggressiveness.
