  • Biochemical and behavioral evidence for an interaction between ethanol and calcium channel antagonists.
  • 1988
  • Ingår i: Journal of neural transmission. ; 74:3, s. 181-93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present series of experiments we have studied the effects of the dihydropyridine calcium channel antagonist nifedipine on ethanol-induced changes in behavior and dopamine (DA) release and metabolism. The locomotor-stimulatory effect of low doses of ethanol (2.5 g/kg) was antagonized by nifedipine, whereas ethanol-induced sedation observed after higher doses (4.5 g/kg) was potentiated. Biochemical studies indicated that ethanol enhanced the metabolism and release of DA in the striatum and the DA-rich limbic regions measured by post mortem analyses of DA-metabolites by HPLC with electrochemical detection and by in vivo voltammetry in anaesthetized rats, respectively. Pretreatment with nifedipine antagonized the stimulatory effects of ethanol on the DA-system. Nifedipine reduced the preference for ethanol, estimated by the relative intake of ethanol (6% v/v) and water in a free-choice situation, suggesting an influence of nifedipine not only on the stimulatory but also on the positive reinforcing effects of ethanol. The present results suggest that the locomotor-stimulatory and positive reinforcing effects of ethanol as well as its enhancing effect on dopaminergic activity may involve an enhancement of calcium mediated mechanisms.

  • The forces of ankle joint structures during ergometer cycling.
  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Foot & ankle. - : SAGE Publications. - 0198-0211. ; 6:3, s. 135-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ankle joint moment, joint compressive force, and Achilles tendon force obtained during ergometer cycling were calculated by using a quartz force-measuring transducer mounted on the pedal. Six healthy subjects rode in 11 different ways at different workloads, pedalling rates, saddle heights, and pedal foot positions. The mean maximum dorsiflexing load moment about the ankle joint during standardized ergometer cycling was calculated to 30.9 nm. The mean ankle joint compressive force and mean Achilles tendon force measured 1008 N (1.4 times body weight) and 762 N (1.1 times body weight), respectively. The ankle joint moment was significantly changed by a change of workload or pedal foot position.

  • Pain assessment with different intensity scales in response to loading of joint structures.
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Pain. - 0304-3959. ; 27:3, s. 401-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the present study was to compare intensity levels assessed on Borg's Category Scale for Ratings of Perceived Pain (BRPP) (1982) (a verbal scale using adjectives and adverbs combined with the numbers 0-10), with assessments on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (a 10 cm horizontal line). Eight healthy subjects volunteered in an experimental study, where pain was provoked by load on passive soft tissue elbow joint structures. Each subject participated 4 times on different occasions in the same experimental set-up, which was divided into six 2 min periods; 3 periods with load induced by applied external weights causing load moments of 3.4 Nm, 4.5 Nm and 6.8 Nm plus that induced by the weight of the lower arm and hand (average 2.9 Nm), followed by 3 periods without external weights. Each series consisted of 12 assessments given during the last 10 sec period of each minute on either the BRPP or the VAS. No significant difference was found between the first and second time a scale was used by the same subject, and none between the assessments on the VAS and the BRPP. Intensity levels of pain increased with load and time and decreased after reduction of the load moments. It is concluded that both scales can be used to reliably assess intensity levels of perceived pain elicited by loading joint structures. Intensity levels, as assessed on both scales, are associated with applied external load and time for exposure.

  • Social Contracts as Assets : A Possible Solution to the Time-Consistency Problem
  • 1987
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a new solution to the time-consistency problem that appears capable of enforcing ex ante policy in a variety of settings in which other enforcement mechanisms do not work. The solution involves formulating a social contract, institution, or agreement that specifies the optimal ex ante policy. The social contract is effectively sold by succesive old generations to successive young generations, who pay for the social contract through the payment of taxes. Both old and young generations have an economic incentive to fulfill the social contract. For the old generation, breaking the social contract makes the social contract valueless, and the generation suffers a capital loss by not being able to sell it. For the young generation the economic advantage of purchasing the existing social contract exceeds its price as well as the economic gain from setting up the a new social contract.
