    • In mechatronic product development, there is a lack of a common understanding among different engineering domains, regarding the design. One step in improving this situation is to develop information models capable of representing both hardware and software elements. The objective of this paper is to investigate the Chromosome Model’s ability with respect to the mechatronic product and also to suggest an information model which implements its principles. The approach takes its point of departure on a theoretical level by analysing theories from mechanical and software engineering. Further, software concepts of relevance are incorporated into the Chromosome Model. The result, referred to as a meta model, is then transformed to an information model by utilising STEP AP214. Both the meta model and the information model are validated with an industrial example. The conclusions drawn from the work are that the Chromosome Model can be used as a meta model for mechatronic products and that STEP AP214 can be deployed within the scope of the meta model. The resulting information model captures the functional, causal and spatial relationships of a mechatronic product.

    • OBJECTIVE: To determine baseline characteristics and the effects of 2 years of GH replacement therapy on body composition, muscle strength, bone mass, and metabolic indices in GH-deficient (GHD) adults previously treated for pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease. DESIGN: A single-centre, open-labelled, prospective study. PATIENTS: Fifteen consecutive GHD adults previously treated for pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease (CD group) and 15 closely matched GHD adults with previous nonfunctioning hypopituitary disease (NF group) were included. All patients had adult-onset GH deficiency. RESULTS: The mean dose of GH was similar in both study groups during the 2-year treatment. At baseline, diastolic blood pressure was higher, and lumbar (L2-L4) bone mineral density (BMD) was lower, in the CD group than in the NF group. The increase in lean mass in response to GH therapy, as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), was less marked in the CD group. GH replacement therapy reduced diastolic blood pressure only in the CD group. The patients in the CD group had greater treatment response in lumbar (L2-L4) spine BMD and in isometric and isokinetic knee extension strength than the patients in the NF group. At study end, no difference remained between the two study groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed differences in the baseline characteristics between GHD patients previously treated for Cushing's disease as compared with closely matched GHD patients with previous nonfunctioning hypopituitary disease. The 2-year GH replacement therapy eliminated all the differences between the two study groups.

    • Product structure management (PSM) is a process that affects many of the activity domains1. (AD) in a company. Different ADs have different requirements for the decomposition of a product structure and the function of the information systems (IS) used. Departments therefore often work in differing ISs. If several ISs contain some of the same information, it is important that it be updated in all systems when it is changed. Since PSM is a change intensive activity, it is difficult to perform it in an environment consisting of several heterogeneous ISs. There is a need for strategies of PSM that take into account all relevant aspects of an IS, such as the process it supports, the type of information handled, the systems used and the organization. Based on a case study at an automotive manufacturing firm, this paper discusses the diverse product structure requirements of various ADs. Proposed strategies for PSM can be used as a general guide and for categorization when analyzing ISs before introducing new systems or restructuring existing systems.

    • The growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-1 axis is not only of importance for linear body growth during childhood, but it is also one of the major determinants of adult bone mass. Studies show that GH treatment increases bone mass in rodents as well as in adult GH-deficient humans, but the effect of GH treatment on bone mass in healthy humans has so far not been impressive. Recently, a new class of GH secretagogues (GHSs) has been developed. In humans, GHS treatment affects biochemical markers of bone turnover and increases growth velocity in selected short children with or without GH deficiency. In rodents, GHS treatment increase bone mineral content, but it has not yet been shown that GHS treatment can affect bone mass in adult humans.
