  • The potential of Λ and Ξ- studies with PANDA at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: p¯ p→ Λ¯ Λ and p¯ p→ Ξ¯ +Ξ-. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

  • Study of excited Ξ baryons with the P¯ ANDA detector
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of baryon excitation spectra provides insight into the inner structure of baryons. So far, most of the world-wide efforts have been directed towards N∗ and Δ spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the study of the double and triple strange baryon spectrum provides independent information to the N∗ and Δ spectra. The future antiproton experiment P¯ANDA will provide direct access to final states containing a Ξ¯ Ξ pair, for which production cross sections up to μb are expected in p¯p reactions. With a luminosity of L= 10 31 cm- 2 s- 1 in the first phase of the experiment, the expected cross sections correspond to a production rate of ∼106events/day. With a nearly 4 π detector acceptance, P¯ANDA will thus be a hyperon factory. In this study, reactions of the type p¯p → Ξ¯ +Ξ∗ - as well as p¯p → Ξ¯ ∗ +Ξ- with various decay modes are investigated. For the exclusive reconstruction of the signal events a full decay tree fit is used, resulting in reconstruction efficiencies between 3 and 5%. This allows high statistics data to be collected within a few weeks of data taking.

  • The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analysis of 273 ancient horse genomes reveals that modern domestic horses originated in the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region. Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare(1). However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling(2-4) at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc(3). Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia(5) and Anatolia(6), have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic, geographic and temporal origins of modern domestic horses have remained unknown. Here we pinpoint the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region, as the homeland of modern domestic horses. Furthermore, we map the population changes accompanying domestication from 273 ancient horse genomes. This reveals that modern domestic horses ultimately replaced almost all other local populations as they expanded rapidly across Eurasia from about 2000 bc, synchronously with equestrian material culture, including Sintashta spoke-wheeled chariots. We find that equestrianism involved strong selection for critical locomotor and behavioural adaptations at the GSDMC and ZFPM1 genes. Our results reject the commonly held association(7) between horseback riding and the massive expansion of Yamnaya steppe pastoralists into Europe around 3000 bc(8,9) driving the spread of Indo-European languages(10). This contrasts with the scenario in Asia where Indo-Iranian languages, chariots and horses spread together, following the early second millennium bc Sintashta culture(11,12).

  • Co(NO3)(2) as an inverted umbrella-type chiral noncoplanar ferrimagnet
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 102:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The low-dimensional magnetic systems tend to reveal exotic spin-liquid ground states or form peculiar types of long-range order. Among systems of vivid interest are those characterized by the triangular motif in two dimensions. The realization of either ordered or disordered ground state in triangular, honeycomb, or kagome lattices is dictated by the competition of exchange interactions, also being sensitive to anisotropy and the spin value of magnetic ions. While the low-spin Heisenberg systems may arrive to a spin-liquid long-range entangled quantum state with emergent gauge structures, the high-spin Ising systems may establish the rigid noncollinear structures. Here, we present the case of chiral noncoplanar inverted umbrella-type ferrimagnet formed in cobalt nitrate Co(NO3)(2) below T-C = 3 K with the comparable spin and orbital contributions to the total magnetic moment.

  • Competition between orbital effects, Pauli limiting, and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide superconductors
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: New Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 1367-2630. ; 24:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We compare the upper critical field of bulk single-crystalline samples of the two intrinsic transition metal dichalcogenide superconductors, 2H-NbSe2 and 2H-NbS2, in high magnetic fields where their layer structure is aligned strictly parallel and perpendicular to the field, using magnetic torque experiments and a high-precision piezo-rotary positioner. While both superconductors show that orbital effects still have a significant impact when the layer structure is aligned parallel to the field, the upper critical field of NbS2 rises above the Pauli limiting field and forms a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, while orbital effects suppress superconductivity in NbSe2 just below the Pauli limit, which excludes the formation of the FFLO state. From the out-of-plane anisotropies, the coherence length perpendicular to the layers of 31 angstrom in NbSe2 is much larger than the interlayer distance, leading to a significant orbital effect suppressing superconductivity before the Pauli limit is reached, in contrast to the more 2D NbS2.

  • Coexistence of Superconductivity and Charge Density Waves in Tantalum Disulfide : Experiment and Theory
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 125:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in tantalum disulfide (2H-TaS2) at low temperature is boosted by applying hydrostatic pressures to study both vibrational and magnetic transport properties. Around P-c, we observe a superconducting dome with a maximum superconducting transition temperature T-c = 9.1 K. First-principles calculations of the electronic structure predict that, under ambient conditions, the undistorted structure is characterized by a phonon instability at finite momentum close to the experimental CDW wave vector. Upon compression, this instability is found to disappear, indicating the suppression of CDW order. The calculations reveal an electronic topological transition (ETT), which occurs before the suppression of the phonon instability, suggesting that the ETT alone is not directly causing the structural change in the system. The temperature dependence of the first vortex penetration field has been experimentally obtained by two independent methods. While a d wave and single-gap BCS prediction cannot describe the lower critical field H-c1 data, the temperature dependence of the H-c1 can be well described by a single-gap anisotropic s-wave order parameter.

  • Subsea permafrost carbon stocks and climate change sensitivity estimated by expert assessment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 1748-9326. ; 15:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The continental shelves of the Arctic Ocean and surrounding seas contain large stocks of organic matter (OM) and methane (CH4), representing a potential ecosystem feedback to climate change not included in international climate agreements. We performed a structured expert assessment with 25 permafrost researchers to combine quantitative estimates of the stocks and sensitivity of organic carbon in the subsea permafrost domain (i.e. unglaciated portions of the continental shelves exposed during the last glacial period). Experts estimated that the subsea permafrost domain contains similar to 560 gigatons carbon (GtC; 170-740, 90% confidence interval) in OM and 45 GtC (10-110) in CH4. Current fluxes of CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) to the water column were estimated at 18 (2-34) and 38 (13-110) megatons C yr(-1), respectively. Under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) RCP8.5, the subsea permafrost domain could release 43 Gt CO2-equivalent (CO(2)e) by 2100 (14-110) and 190 Gt CO(2)e by 2300 (45-590), with similar to 30% fewer emissions under RCP2.6. The range of uncertainty demonstrates a serious knowledge gap but provides initial estimates of the magnitude and timing of the subsea permafrost climate feedback.

  • Bayesian updating for data adjustments and multi-level uncertainty propagation within Total Monte Carlo
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Annals of Nuclear Energy. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0306-4549 .- 1873-2100. ; 139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, a method is proposed for combining differential and integral benchmark experimental data within a Bayesian framework for nuclear data adjustments and multi-level uncertainty propagation, using the Total Monte Carlo method. First, input parameters to basic nuclear physics models implemented within the TALYS code, were randomly varied to produce a large set of random nuclear data files. Next, a probabilistic data assimilation was carried out by computing the likelihood function for each random nuclear data file based first on only differential experimental data and then on integral benchmark data. The individual likelihood functions from the two updates were then combined into a global likelihood function. The proposed method was applied for the adjustment of n+Pb-208 in the fast energy region below 20 MeV. The adjusted file was compared with available experimental data as well as evaluations from the major nuclear data libraries and found to compare favourably.

  • In search of the best nuclear data file for proton induced reactions : Varying both models and their parameters
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ND 2019. - : EDP Sciences. - 9782759891061
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A lot of research work has been carried out in fine tuning model parameters to reproduce experimental data for neutron induced reactions. This however is not the case for proton induced reactions where large deviations still exist between model calculations and experiments for some cross sections. In this work, we present a method for searching both the model and model parameter space in order to identify the 'best' nuclear reaction models with their parameter sets that reproduces carefully selected experimental data. Three sets of experimental data from EXFOR are used in this work: (1) cross sections of the target nucleus (2) cross sections of the residual nuclei and (3) angular distributions. Selected models and their parameters were varied simultaneously to produce a large set of random nuclear data files. The goodness of fit between our adjustments and experimental data was achieved by computing a global reduced chi square which took into consideration the above listed experimental data. The method has been applied for the adjustment of proton induced reactions on Co-59 between 1 to 100 MeV. The adjusted files obtained are compared with available experimental data and evaluations from other nuclear data libraries.

  • Growth of Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides by Solvent Evaporation Technique
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Crystal Growth & Design. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1528-7483 .- 1528-7505. ; 20:10, s. 6930-6938
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to their physical properties and potential applications in energy conversion and storage, transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have garnered substantial interest in recent years. Among this class of materials, TMDs based on molybdenum, tungsten, sulfur, and selenium are particularly attractive due to their semiconducting properties and the availability of bottom-up synthesis techniques. Here we report a method which yields high-quality crystals of transition-metal diselenide and ditelluride compounds (PtTe2, PdTe2, NiTe2, TaTe2, TiTe2, RuTe2, PtSe2, PdSe2, NbSe2, TiSe2, VSe2, ReSe2) from their solid solutions, via vapor deposition from a metal-saturated chalcogen melt. Additionally, we show the synthesis of rare-earth-metal polychalcogenides and NbS2 crystals using the aforementioned process. Most of the crystals obtained have a layered CdI2 structure. We have investigated the physical properties of selected crystals and compared them to state of the art findings reported in the literature. Remarkably, the charge density wave transition in 1T-TiSe2 and 2H-NbSe2 crystals is well-defined at TCDW ≈ 200 and 33 K, respectively. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and electron diffraction are used to directly access the electronic and crystal structures of PtTe2 single crystals and yield state of the art measurements.
