  • Sounds of Migration : Music and migration in the Nordic countries
  • 2021
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, we have seen a renewed interest in the study of music and migration in the Nordic countries, following from the extensive migration waves in recent decades and the increasingly charged political discourse on refugees and integration. Many of these studies focus on the role of music as a collective emblem, a social catalyst and a unifying force for people in vulnerable situations. In April 2019, Nordic ethnomusicologists gathered in Stockholm to discuss how experiences and knowledge from previous studies could enrich today's research. This book is the result of this meeting.

    • In recent years, we have seen a renewed interest in the study of music and migration in the Nordic countries, following from the extensive migration waves in recent decades and the increasingly charged political discourse on refugees and integration. Many of these studies focus on the role of music as a collective emblem, a social catalyst and a unifying force for people in vulnerable situations.Studies of music and migration in the Nordic countries go further back in time. During the 1980s, migration research was expanded to include studies of expressive culture, cultural encounters and cultural diversity. During the 1990s and onwards, a number of works on music making and dancing among migrants were published that significantly strengthened and renewed the field of ethnomusicology in the Nordic countries. In April 2019, Nordic ethnomusicologists gathered in Stockholm to discuss how experiences and knowledge from previous studies could enrich today's research. This book is the result of this meeting.

  • I landet annorlunda : Öar, öbor och besökare i gotländska turistbroschyrer.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Laboratorium för folk och kultur. - Helsingfors : Föreningen Brage. - 0787-5576. ; 3

  • Mingling abscence and presence in Visby:the Medieval Week 'Plague Edition' 2020
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Enabling Sustainable Visits. - Uppsala : Campus Gotland. - 9789150630145 ; , s. 23-52
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the beginning of the pandemic in the spring of 2020, new digital and hybrid solutions for meetings, events, concerts, and festivals have been introduced as an opportunity to carry on cultural activities during lockdown. Pressure was put on festivals, forcing the entire industry to adapt and find new solutions to survive. On the island of Gotland, Medeltidsveckan (The Medieval Week), the largest medieval festival in the Nordic region, successfully launched a fully digital version in 2020, aptly called ‘The Plague Edition’. This chapter discusses the digitization of Medeltidsveckan and argues that the digitization of large events might not only represent a novel chance to enable sustainable visits in the future but also an opportunity for the creation of new social places in which presence and absence is constructed and negotiated in new ways.

  • Imagining Destination Gotland
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Enabling Sustainble Visits. - Uppsala : Campus Gotland. - 9789150630145 ; , s. 81-108
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter examines Gotland’s destination image through a number of Gotlandic tourist brochures produced between 1973 and 2016. After sections on theory and method follows a discussion of how visitors, visited, and the destination are constituted in mutual relationships, and how imageries, artefacts, and activities shape and organize these relations. The analysis focuses on how Gotland is produced as an attractive destination, how the visitors are constituted by the destination, and how the islanders are constituted by the visitors. We argue that tourist brochures need to be understood as active agents that play a crucial part in the formatting of island destinations, islanders, and visiting tourists. In the final section, destination images are discussed in relation to sustainable destination development, and to sustainability more generally. We conclude that to enable sustainable visits, the tourist industry should invite both visitors and the visited to take active part in the image production of destinations in order to produce less stereotypical and more inclusive destination images and thereby to contribute to improved conditions for locals, visitors, and destinations.

  • Musiketnologi : Elva repliker om en vetenskap
  • 2017
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In October 2016 ethnomusicologists from Sweden, Denmark and Finland met to discuss and reflect over the development of ethnomusicology in the Nordic countries during the last 30 years – the themes that have been elaborated and the results that have been won; the current themes, theories, trends and tendencies; and the near future, how and in which directions the field may continue to develop. The eleven papers here collected present a broad range of perspectives on the roots and development of ethnomusicology in the Nordic countries, music archives and historical sources, the role, position and identity of ethnomusicology and ethnomusicologist in Academia at large, and within the fields of musicology, ethnology and anthropology in particular. A conclusion of the colloquium is that even though there is no ethnomusicological department in Nordic universities, the field nevertheless has become quite firmly established as an academic field of its own in the Nordic countries.
