  • Plants mentioned in the Islamic Scriptures (Holy Qur'an and Ahadith) : Traditional uses and medicinal importance in contemporary times
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Ethnopharmacology. - : Elsevier. - 0378-8741 .- 1872-7573. ; 243
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ethnopharmacological relevance: Over the past thousand years, Islamic physicians have collected cultural, philosophical, sociological and historical backgrounds for understanding diseases and medications. The Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him (PBUH) said: "There is no disease that Allah has created, except that Allah also has created its cure." Therefore, Islamic scholars are encouraged to explore and use both traditional and modern forms of medicine. Aim of the study: (1) To identify some of the medicinal plants mentioned in the Holy Qur'an and Ahadith textbooks of the period 700-1500 AD; (2) to compare them with presently used traditional medicines; (3) to evaluate their value based on modern research; and (4) to investigate the contributions of Islamic scholars to the development of the scientific branches, particularly medicine. Materials and methods: A literature search was performed relating to 12 medicinal plants mentioned in the Holy Qur'an and Ahadith using textbooks, Al-Azhar scholars, published articles, the plant list website (http://www.theplantlist.org/), the medicinal plant names services website (http://mpns.kew.org/mpns-portal/) and web databases (PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar). Results and discussion: The Islamic Golden Age was a step towards modern medicine, with unique insights and multi-disciplinary aspects. Traditional Islamic Medicine has had a significant impact on the development of various medical, scientific and educational activities. Innumerable Muslim and non-Muslim physicians have built on the strong foundation of Traditional Islamic Medicine by translating the described natural remedies and effects. The influences of different ancient cultures on the traditional uses of natural products were also documented in Islamic Scriptures in the last part of the second millennium. The divine teachings of Islam combine natural and practical healing and incorporate inherited science and technology. Conclusion: In this review, we discuss Traditional Islamic Medicine with reference to both medical recommendations mentioned in the Holy Qur'an and Prophetic Traditional Medicine (al-Tibb al-Nabawi). Although the molecular mechanisms and functions of some of the listed medicinal plants and their derivatives have been intensively studied, some traditional remedies have yet to be translated into clinical applications.

  • Review Essay: The History of Atheism, Secularism, and Humanism: Recent Works and Future Directions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: History of Intellectual Culture. - 1492-7810. ; 2, s. 163-188
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this review essay, the author presents and discusses current research on the history of atheism, secularism, and humanism, specifically focusing on seven recent monographs. Based on these works, he paints a picture of where this research field stands today while also offering some suggestions regarding in which direction research on this topic ought to move in the future. The author stresses that even though the research discussed spans many geographical areas and time periods, it constitutes a coherent research field. He underlines how context matters, stressing the importance of paying attention to specific religious contexts. He emphasizes the need for more English-language research on cases other than the US and the UK and the need for more comparative, entangled, and global histories. He welcomes the trend of 20th-century topics in a field dominated by earlier centuries. Finally, he points out how research on this topic could enrichen nearby fields, specifically discussing which synergies may be found in relation to the history of knowledge.

  • Practical wisdom and virtue ethics for knowledge co-production in sustainability science
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Sustainability. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2398-9629. ; 6:5, s. 493-501
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since antiquity, philosophers in the Western tradition of virtue ethics have declared practical wisdom to be the central virtue of citizens involved in public and social life. Practical wisdom is of particular importance when values are conflicting, power is unequal and knowledge uncertain. We propose that practical wisdom and virtue ethics can inform the practice of sustainability researchers by strengthening their capacity to engage with the normative complexities of knowledge co-production when aspiring to contribute to transformative change.

  • The Vice of Admiration
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Philosophy. - Cambridge : Cambridge University Press. - 0031-8191 .- 1469-817X. ; 93:1, s. 69-90
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Moral exemplars are often held up as objects to be admired. Such admiration is thought beneficial to the admirer, inducing him or her to emulate virtuous conduct, and deemed flattering to the admired. This paper offers a critical examination of admiration from a broadly Kantian perspective, arguing that admiration – even of genuine moral exemplars – violates the duty of self-respect. It also provides an explanation for the fact that moral exemplars themselves typically shun admiration. Lastly, it questions the assumption that admiration leads to emulation on the basis of scientific findings that indicate that admiration induces passivity in the admirer rather than an incentive to self-improvement.

  • Revisiting Ancient and Modern Liberty : On de Dijn’s Freedom: An Unruly History
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Political Theory. - : SAGE Publications. - 1741-2730 .- 1474-8851. ; 21:1, s. 197-207
  • Forskningsöversikt (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Annelien de Dijn’s Freedom: An Unruly History is a rich and thought-provoking work in intellectual history, tracing thinking and debating about political freedom in the West from ancient Greece to our own times. The ancient notion of freedom as self-government (what Quentin Skinner calls neo-roman liberty) is referred to as the ‘democratic conception’. The argument is that this conception survived through the renaissance, the early-modern period and the 18th-century Atlantic revolutions only to be deliberately scrapped in the 19th century in favour of liberal freedom – absence of state interference – thus severing the ancient links between freedom and democracy and turning democracy into a threat to freedom. The book is an impressive achievement and the use of sources staggeringly wide. However, though the liberal turn is certainly a fact of history, I am not convinced that it was such a decisive break, nor that the relations between conceptions of freedom and attitudes to democracy are as clear-cut as de Dijn needs them to be. De Dijn claims, with regret, that the liberal view remains our view and is now an essential part of Western civilization, but I find that to be empirically under-substantiated. By using the liberal turn to define an age, de Dijn lets history play out through the lens of the elite.
