- Almost Religious. Cathedrals and Secular TheologiesThrough the lens of Bengt Kristensson Uggla’s book Katedralens hemlighet (The Secret of the Cathedral) this article discusses new trends in the debate about atheism, secular humanism and spirituality. It attempts to frame the theologically relevant content of these debates in terms of post-Christian theology, which means that the new secular humanist attempts to fill the vacuum after the harsh critique of the so-called new atheists are interpreted as theologically important as long as theology is understood as standing dialectical and problematized relationship to Christianity, both as a historical and contemporary force. Kristensson Uggla’s Christian theological critique of the idea of God’s omnipotence, together with his emphasis on the cross and the kenotic aspects of Christian faith, becomes a backdrop to a theological interpretation of secular humanist attempts to relate to the loss of religion and the need for new notions of self-transcendence and love. These attempts are viewed as post-Christian rather than anti-theological.

- In this essay I draw attention to conceptual similarities in Walter Benjamin's and Theodor W. Adorno's reflection about language, with special attention to Benjamin's 1916 essay about language as such, including its theological impulses. In Adorno's case, I concentrate on language theory as it comes forth in relation to his philosophy of music and the supposed language-character of music. I argue that this particular connection between Benjamin and Adorno is largely unexplored in the literature, and I show that their conceptual affinities have far-reaching consequences for a proper understanding of Adorno's philosophy as a whole. Music is of fundamental importance for Adorno's critical theory, and this fact points to an intricate entwinement between materialism and theology, stemming from Benjamin's theory of language. Thinking of music as secularized prayer means to emphasize that music relates to reality in a way that resembles the logic of Benjamin's understanding of a pre-lapsarian language of divine names.

- This article addresses Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling, claiming that a strand of theological approaches to its artful exposition overestimates the artistic success of the work and underestimates the philosophical ambiguities of Kierkegaard’s philosophy. From the viewpoint of Theodor W. Adorno’s critical conception of Kierkegaard’s thought, heavily indebted to Walter Benjamin’s theory of allegory, it is suggested that a more meaningful aesthetic reading of Fear and Trembling would be to view it as a philosophically overdetermined discourse on silence, with a failed poetic ambition. The article illustrates the tradition of poetic readings with Stephen Mulhall’s Christian way of approaching Fear and Trembling. Against this example, and in line with Adorno's critical Benjaminian take, Kierkegaard’s work can be placed at the threshold of a literary development eventually leading to the silence of Samuel Beckett’s play Endgame.
