Tracing Trade Routes: Examining the Cargo of the 15th-Century Skaftö Wreck

- The Skaftö wreck of c.1440, situated north of Gothenburg, Sweden, was investigated between the years 2005 and 2009. Investigations revealed a variety of cargoes, such as copper and speiss ingots, barrels with lime and tar, bricks and roof tiles, and oak timber in the form of planks and boards. In order to identify the different cargo types found on the wreck, and, possibly, establish their geographical origin, a variety of analytical methods have been utilized. The present study accounts for the archaeological investigations of the cargo and for the analyses that have been conducted to date. Results are compared to and discussed in relation to other contemporaneous source material, both historical and archaeological. Based on this examination, it is concluded that the vessel was heading from the southeastern corner of the Baltic Sea, most likely Danzig (Gdańsk), aiming for the Western European market, possibly Bruges.

- This paper uses interdisciplinary methods to investigate responses to the Little Ice Age in regions where livestock farming was dominant, a neglected subject due to the scarcity of detailed written records regarding pastoral land use. It argues that landscape-level histories which include pollen evidence and archaeology can address this challenge and reveal local processes of climate adaptation. Here we focus on Ireland and Scotland and a fascinating rise in small-scale cereal cultivation on upland pastures during the Little Ice Age. Bayesian modeling is used to test the chronological resolution of field evidence and compare it with climate reconstructions. We can see that the cultivation emerged in late medieval times, when cattle were facing climate-related stresses, and increased in early modern times during the Little Ice Age’s main phase. We suggest that it started in an indirect adaptation to climate change, supplementing supplies of food and fodder for pastoralists, but increased as rural populations and external market demands grew. There is a need for finer temporal resolution in pollen records and archaeology, as well as greater integration with socio-economic history, if we are to be more certain about changes in the relative significance of climate in pastoral land use.

- Postmedieval shipwrecks: reflections on maritime archaeology and historical archaeology with examples from the Baltic Sea That the brackish water of the Baltic Sea provides ideal conditions for preservation of organic material is a well-known fact. With this in mind it is a bit surprising just how little archaeological efforts that has been put into surveying these wrecks. The majority of these remains date to the early modern period. The study of these remains are thus associated with the assets as well as problems associated with historical archaeology. This paper reviews some of the research efforts carried out on wrecks in the past with focus on the relationship between history and archaeology. It is argued that the often claimed unique archaeological potential of the Baltic wrecks, tend to become overshadowed by narratives sprung out of written sources. The paper ends with a couple of examples of discussions that are only possible to raise from well-preserved shipwrecks. Inspired by phenomenology and the current research on historical buildings it is argued that ‘the lived experience’ is a possible way forward to raise other questions and to highlight other aspects of the past. The examples discussed are the everyday environment onboard fluits, a very common type of merchant ship, and the famous naval ship Svärdet that went down during a fierce battle in 1676.

- I Blekinge skärgård vid Stora Ekön ligger på knappt tio meters djup vraket efter den danske unionskungen Hans skepp. Fartyget som av sin samtid kallades Gripen och även vid några tillfällen Griphund förliste år 1495 efter en brand ombord när hon låg för ankar. Södertörns högskola har bedrivit marinarkeologiska undersökningar på platsen sedan 2013 och denna rapport redogör för fortsatt dokumentation av vraket under 2023 tillsammans med Stockholms universitet. Huvudsyftet med insatsen var att studera överbyggnaden på skeppet för att förstå hur fartyget fungerade i strid med speciellt fokus på knektarnas roll ombord och deras samspel med den befintliga vapenteknologin.Rapporten innehåller även en omfattande analys av tidigare bärgade delar från ringvävnadsplagg samt synpunkter på vrakets bevarandestatus. Gripen/Griphund utgör som skeppskonstruktion samt med vapnen och föremålen ombord ett unikt exempel på ett kungligt skepp från slutet av medeltiden. Det är en representant för de nya kravellbyggda skepp som tillsammans med sina furstar var med och bidrog till den tidigmoderna samhällsförändringen.

- We report the archaeological survey, dendrochronological analysis, and archival research concerning two shipwrecks located in shallow waters outside Vaxholm in the Stockholm Archipelago, Baltic Sea. According to oral tradition, the two wrecks are the remains of Neptunus and To Løver, two former Danish warships that were taken as prizes at the battle of Fehmarn in 1644. The Swedish navy then used the two ships until 1659, when they were reportedly scuttled as a blockage along the sea route towards Stockholm. Before being intentionally scuttled, the two ships drifted away and sank. The work presented in this article confirms the substance of the tradition and reports that substantial portions of the two ships are preserved. Moreover, the two wrecks shed light on the scuttling process and the construction of an underwater barrier.

- Plane Iron or Sámi Hide Scraper? A Puzzling Edge Tool from the Iron Age This article addresses the function, use and ethnic affiliation of small iron edge tools of type Rygh 416 (reproduced by O. Rygh in Norske Oldsager in 1885). These are known from many excavated graves and settlement sites especially in Mid-Scandinavia, mainly dating from the Migration and Merovingian Periods (fifth/sixth–eighth centuries AD), but also from at least two places further to the south: the centres for shipbuilding, trade and crafts at Lundeborg on Funen and Paviken on Gotland. The author rejects the possibility that this kind of tool was used as a hide scraper, with a transverse shaft of wood, as recently proposed. Several characteristics of the edge tools found, together with their find contexts, strongly conflict with this notion. Instead the author adheres to the traditional opinion that it is probably a matter of a North-European type of plane iron, although no complete plane with such an iron has been found so far. Possible applications may have been the manufacture of ships at places such as Lundeborg and Paviken, and skis and sledges in Mid-Scandinavia.Arguments are also put forward rejecting another conclusion drawn in recent research, namely that this kind of tool represents a specific Sámi material culture. The tool is in fact known from a number of disparate milieus. Thus, it is likely to have been used across ethnic barriers – in so far it is possible to speak about such barriers in Scandinavia during the period in question.
