  • Early Crime Fiction in Scandinavian Literature
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: La questione Romantica. Nuova serie. - 1125-0364. ; 2:2, s. 71-81
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detective fiction is a genre of dubious origin. In Scandinavian literature, the murky past of the genre leads back to three stories dating from late romanticism. The Scandinavian audience got its first detective in 1829, "The Rector of Vejlbye" by Steen Steensen Blicher. A decade later two other stories were published: "Skallnora kvarn" (1838)by Carl Jonas Love Almqvist and "The Murder of Engine Maker Roolfsen" (1839) by Mauritz Christopher Hansen. In this article I will elaborate my claim that these three stories constitute the emergence of Scandinavian crime ficiton; I will examine them as early examples of detective stories and show how they apply what later has been acknowledged as the 'detection formula'- I will start by analyzing the construction ofthe crime and the depiction of the detective as well as his counterpart, the criminal, in each of the three stories. I will then proceed to discuss in what way the stories relate to their time and cultural context as crime and mystery stories and in what way they set up what were to become the standard elements of detective fiction.

  • The Ethics of Reading and Writing across Time in South Africa
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Southern African Studies. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0305-7070 .- 1465-3893. ; 48:2, s. 407-418
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This review article discusses Carli Coetzee’s Written Under the Skin and Hedley Twidle’s Experiments with Truth in relation to ethical reading and writing protocols in South Africa. Coetzee’s book offers an embodied reading of multidirectional cultural memory practices in contemporary South African culture through the metaphor of blood. Twidle’s book considers the ethically intricate ways in which real people, places and events are shaped into narratives in non-fiction and how the resulting writings represent and craft a multitude of voices in their struggles with fact and fiction. Focusing primarily on questions of time, memory and literary form, the article explores how the two monographs outline these issues as central to ethical protocols of care. Comparisons across time which allow for contextualisation, intergenerational and intercultural understanding and a respect for the strangeness of the past, lie at the heart of both Coetzee’s and Twidle’s reading strategies. These ethical reading strategies can be used to counteract a competitive, pre-rehearsed or static understanding of cultural artefacts and texts and instead allow for complex engagements with the South African past and present.

  • Introduction : Cognition, Motion Events, and SLA
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Modern language journal. - : Wiley. - 0026-7902 .- 1540-4781. ; 99:S1, s. 1-13
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This opening article introduces the reader to current topics in research on language and thought in monolingual speakers and second language (L2) learners, with particular attention to the domain of motion. The article also delineates the rationale that underlies the special issue at hand, and provides a contextualisation of the individual contributions. It is argued that the centrality of motion in everyday human life, in combination with the vast cross-linguistic variation in motion construal, makes motion events a suitable topic for SLA research, both in terms of ecological validity and learnability challenge. The pedagogical aspects of this line of research are discussed in terms of, first, whether it is desirable to include the acquisition of language-specific thought patterns in curricular goals, and second, whether the knowledge about language specificity in thought can be used in teaching as a means to facilitate learning.

  • The development of a vocabulary for PEEPS – SEprofiles of early expressive phonological skills for Swedish
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Clinical Linguistics & Phonetics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0269-9206 .- 1464-5076. ; 32:9, s. 844-859
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the development of a vocabulary for Profiles of Early Expressive Phonological Skills for Swedish (PEEPS-SE), a tool for assessment of expressive phonology in Swedish-learning children in the age range of 18-36months. PEEPS-SE is the Swedish version of the original PEEPS, Profiles of Early Expressive Phonological Skills, which uses two age-adequate word listsa basic word list (BWL) for the assessment of 18-24-month-old children, to which an expanded word list (EWL) is added for assessment of 24-36-month-old children, or children with more than 250 words in their expressive vocabulary. The selection of words in PEEPS-SE is based on two types of criteria: age of acquisition and phonological complexity. The words also need to be easy to elicit in a natural way in test situations. Vocabulary data previously collected with the Swedish Early Communicative Development Inventory are used for selection of age-adequate words, where the BWL contains words acquired earlier compared to the additional words in the EWL. The latter also contains words that are more phonologically complex compared to those in the BWL. Word complexity was determined by the Swedish version of word complexity measure. PEEPS-SE has made an attempt to match the original version of PEEPS in terms of both assessment method and word selection.
