  • Rome and the guidebook tradition : from the Middle Ages to the 20th century
  • 2019
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Almost everyone has used a guidebook, when travelling or in the armchair at home. But how and when was the guidebook born? In this book, seven scholars from various disciplines argue that the guidebook emerged in Rome in the late Middle Ages, to form a surprisingly consistent model for guidebooks up to our time. The descriptions of must-see monuments, recommended routes, practical information and value-laden instructions have guided travellers to Rome through more than 1000 years.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "Poets versus Actors Reading Poetry on Swedish Radio 2020–2021"Following the rise of the poet as the principal performer of his or her own work, in the second half of the 20th century, actors have been criticized for performing poetry as if acting on stage, or for focusing too much on conveying the lyric I. This primarily quantitative study investigates what prosodic differences there are between poets and actors reading poetry. The material consists of 276 readings from the Swedish public radio program Dagens dikt (The Daily Poem), from 2020 and 2021. A set of prosodic measures are produced for each recording with computational aid, and the groups are compared by using descriptive statistics. The differences found in terms of tempo and pausal patterns, though small, suggest that the actors read in a conventionally poetic, expressive style, while the poets are closer to a style typical of prose reading and conversational speech; this might be connected to differences between their respective repertoire – the poets reading newer, longer, and possibly more narrative texts. When it comes to pitch, there are more substantial differences: the poets are more monotonous and their tonal patterns more predictable, indicating a formal, less expressive style. These traits are associated with the highly stylized vocal cliché Poet Voice, which in turn is connected to poetological shifts in the last few decades. In both groups, however, younger individuals (born 1970 or later) and women, respectively, are the more monotonous and predictable; this might suggest a sociolinguistic trend not limited to poetry. Qualitative, close listening to a selection of readings largely confirms the findings of the quantitative investigation. While the frequently idiosyncratic poets tend to highlight form, such as rhythm and tonal repetitions, the actors rather try to convey the content of the poem, in accordance with prosodical and performative conventions.

  • Affect in language, gender and sexuality research: studying heterosexual desire
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The Routledge Handbook of Language, Gender and Sexuality. Jo Angouri and Judith Baxter (red.). - London : Routledge. - 9781138200265 - 9781315514840 ; , s. 450-464
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter, we take a poststructuralist approach to gender, sexuality, and the realm of the affective. While there are of course many different emotions that may be relevant to gender and sexuality, this chapter focuses on the discursive construction of heterosexual desire in a particular context – online dating. Empirically, we study heterosexual desire through an investigation of two female friends browsing, reading, and commenting on male online profiles. By analysing these meaning-making practices, we demonstrate how desire is what lies beside and enables the discursive construction of identities in a homosocial context. Ultimately, our argument is that by studying affect it is possible to bring to the fore what has previously been viewed as ‘hidden’, belonging to the ‘private sphere’ or the realm of an ‘inner psychic life’, and therefore dismissed as too slippery a terrain for scholars of language. It is our hope that this chapter demonstrates that what is ‘hidden’ is actually in plain sight. One needs to read the data with an affective eye.

  • A Friend in Need? Research agenda for electronic Second Language infrastructure.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Swedish Language Technology Conference. - Umeå : Umeå Universitet.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article, we describe the research and societal needs as well as ongoing efforts to shape Swedish as a Second Language (L2) infrastructure. Our aim is to develop an electronic research infrastructure that would stimulate empiric research into learners’ language development by preparing data and developing language technology methods and algorithms that can successfully deal with deviations in the learner language.

  • Texter, läsförståelse och läsundervisning i Norge och Sverige : en översikt
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Acta Didactica Norge - tidsskrift for fagdidaktisk forsknings- og utviklingsarbeid i Norge. - : Acta Didactica Norge. - 1504-9922. ; 6:1
