Since a couple of decades, the notion of a precautionary principle plays a central and increasingly influential role in international as well as national policy and regulation regarding the environment and the use of technology. Urging society to take action in the face of potential risks of human activities in these areas, the recent focus on climate change has further sharpened the importance of this idea. However, the idea of a precautionary principle has also been problematised and criticised by scientists, scholars and policy activists, and been accused of almost every intellectual sin imaginable: unclarity, impracticality, arbitrariness and moral as well as political unsoundness. In that light, the very idea of precaution as an ideal for policy making rather comes out as a dead end. On the basis of these contrasting starting points, Christian Munthe undertakes an innovative, in-depth philosophical analysis of what the idea of a precautionary principle is and should be about. A novel theory of the ethics of imposing risks is developed and used as a foundation for defending the idea of precaution in environmental and technological policy making against its critics, while at the same time avoiding a number of identified flaws. The theory is shown to have far-reaching consequences for areas such as bio-, information- and nuclear technology, and global environmental policy in areas such as climate change. The author argues that, while the price we pay for precaution must not be too high, we have to be prepared to pay it in order to act ethically defensible. A number of practical suggestions for precautionary regulation and policy making are made on the basis of this, and some challenges to basic ethical theory as well as consumerist societies, the global political order and liberal democracy are identified

In this book, the authors describe an important class of calcium binding lysozymes that are evolutionarily related to the lysozyme superfamily and the lactalbumins. The authors take the reader through a journey from the evolution, then the structure and properties of the calcium binding lysozymes. They discuss new unique protein folding pathways with local cooperative, close related folding modes that exhibit multiple folding pathways which are not properties of the lactalbumins or non calcium binding lysozymes. They comprise one of the most diverse group of examples in protein folding. In addition this protein class, especially equine lysozyme, shows peculiar amyloid assembly properties that are not common with other fibril forming proteins. It is one of the first shown to form ring shaped amyloids and other complexes in vitro. Lastly equine lysozyme forms complex with oleic acid, a unique form ELOA, which contributes to the family of the human and bovine lactalbumin analogs HAMLET and BAMLET.

Biomedical applications of lanthanum

Book Description: Lanthanum has been used as a tracer to study tight junctions in epithelia by transmission electron microscopy. The key function of the tight junction complex (TJC) is to limit the paracellular permeability by forming a selectively permeable barrier between the apical and basolateral compartment of the extracellular space. Impaired regulation of the TJC causes a variety of diseases, such as autoimmune diseases, cancer development, infections, allergies and asthma. The advantage of lanthanum as an opaque probe is its small ionic radius (0.11 nm), compared to alternative methods, such as radioactive isotope techniques using extracellular tracers and light microscopy techniques with larger polar molecules. This book presents a variety of biomedical applications of lanthanum.

Organic Solar Cells : Theory, Experiment, and Device Simulation

This book covers in a textbook-like fashion the basics or organic solar cells, addressing the limits of photovoltaic energy conversion and giving a well-illustrated introduction to molecular electronics with focus on the working principle and characterization of organic solar cells. Further chapters based on the author’s dissertation focus on the electrical processes in organic solar cells by presenting a detailed drift-diffusion approach to describe exciton separation and charge-carrier transport and extraction. The results, although elaborated on small-molecule solar cells and with focus on the zinc phthalocyanine: C60 material system, are of general nature. They propose and demonstrate experimental approaches for getting a deeper understanding of the dominating processes in amorphous thin-film based solar cells in general. The main focus is on the interpretation of the current-voltage characteristics (J-V curve). This very standard measurement technique for a solar cell reflects the electrical processes in the device. Comparing experimental to simulation data, the author discusses the reasons for S-Shaped J-V curves, the role of charge carrier mobilities and energy barriers at interfaces, the dominating recombination mechanisms, the charge carrier generation profile, and other efficiency-limiting processes in organic solar cells. The book concludes with an illustrative guideline on how to identify reasons for changes in the J-V curve. This book is a suitable introduction for students in engineering, physics, material science, and chemistry starting in the field of organic or hybrid thin-film photovoltaics. It is just as valuable for professionals and experimentalists who analyze solar cell devices.
