  • Manners, Parameters and the Gay Sciences : Realities from the Paramannerist Treatise
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Space Matters. - Vienna : Ambra Verlag. - 9783990435632 - 9783990435762 ; , s. 120-137
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper I aim to remind a brief projection about the inseparable difference between mental and physical space. This projection intends to thicken the aesthetics of sustainability by rejecting social Darwinism as the normalization of chaos and the irrational by way of evolutionary teleology and technocratic domination. To do so, I describe a mannerist recurrence in cultural production and how I hope it may inform a revitalized movement beyond an age of mass industrialization, beyond claims of Parametricism. I argue that this move can be activated by revising Charles Peirce’s Infinite Community of Inquiry, and Gerald Raunig’s notion of Abstract Machines, as vehicles for anthropocentric cybernetics and contemporary ecology. This is not about metaphorical relations between the visual arts and the hard sciences, but to set forth a topological heuristic, an ongoing inquiry to further categorize aspects between the human and non-human worlds, reflecting through Nietzsche's idea of 'gay science.'

  • WITH AN EYE ON NATURE: FEATHERS, FOSSILS AND PHOTOGRAPHS
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Gothenburg Museum of Natural History.
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The exhibition takes you on a journey through time, out in nature and into the rich image archive of Gothenburg's Natural History Museum. Since the mid-nineteenth century, photography has served as an important tool in encounters with nature from the perspectives of both scientific research and amateurs’ devoted examinations of plants, animals, and geology. In the exhibited images, we encounter everything from the small sea roach to a giant lumpfish found off the west coast and geological formations of gneiss and silicon. Through the museum's extensive image collection, which ranges from the early black-and-white portraits of natural scientists and their discoveries to today's high-resolution digitizations of type material, we can follow the development of photographic technology and its use in the natural sciences. Photography has revolutionized the way we observe and perceive nature. At the museum, photography is an indispensable tool for research, preservation, and protection of biological diversity. The camera is used in everything from documenting and describing new species and their natural habitats to photographing museum objects for digitization and exhibitions. However, new visual technologies offer creative possibilities for exploring and communicating museum collections in new ways. With an Eye on Nature questions how and when nature looks back at the person behind the camera. Can photography and new imaging technologies pave the way for different interactions between biological beings such as birds, trees, fungi, and people? The exhibition is based on collections of the Gothenburg Museum of Natural History, in which two guest curators from the Hasselblad Foundation have been botanizing. With an Eye on Nature also includes photographs by bird and nature enthusiast Victor Hasselblad, who was deeply involved in the museum, and works by a selection of contemporary artists who look at nature differently than the scientific. Gothenburg's natural history museum collections span over 150 years. The museum moved to the current building in connection with the city's 300th-anniversary celebration in 1923. With an Eye on Nature is an anniversary exhibition celebrating the museum's first 100 years in Slottsskogen. A wall next to the exhibition is inhabited by colourful birds carved from fresh hazel by primary school students from Västra Götaland.

  • A Slip of the Machinic Tongue
  • 2022
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The title of the book, The Computer as Seen at the End of the Human Age, is a reference to the exhibition “The Machine as Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age”, curated by Pontus Hultén for MoMA in 1968, highlighting how technology was influencing art at a time when mechanical machines were increasingly replaced by electronic and chemical devices. Through its selection of contemporary art works the exhibition thus came to function as a recording of technological history.I never got to see the exhibition since I wasn’t born at the time, but a couple of years ago I came across a curious book with a tin cover. The book was published in connection to the exhibition, and the history recorded between its covers ends at approximately the same time that early computers start to make their way into the art world. In the fifty years that followed, art came to be marked by a digital presence.  It was that book, along with an interest in dead media, and a curiosity for art aided by algorithms, that sparked the idea for The Computer as Seen at the End of the Human Age.Here you will encounter new works by a selection of artists, specifically invited to use algorithms/AI to contribute to a continuous, self-reproducing, anachronistic, machine aided recording of history. A way to preserve, revise and/or comment upon digital history from the vantage point of present-day technology or through the lens of imagined future media, perspectives and technologies. The works have been created specifically for the book. Some are based on works by other artists, made in another era, repurposed for our time and technologies. Others are based on redundant technologies, revived and given new functions. Some adopt a critical or political approach to the algorithm and its impact on society. Several utilize it as an opportunity to create unique works for each separate copy of the edition. Thousands of files eventually compiled into 200 unique books, each with a different cover and different contents – generated, aided or influenced by algorithms. Participating artists: Geraldine Juárez, Cornelia Sollfrank/Winnie Soon, Mishka Henner, Shane Hope, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Rosa Menkman, Rosemary Lee, Olle Essvik, Evan Roth, Jonas Lund, Darsha Hewitt, Carl-Johan Rosén, Linda Hilfling Ritasdatter and Jacek Smolicki.Editor: Olle Essvik

  • A Slip of the Machinic Tongue : Performative Soundscape Installation
  • 2022
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The performance was premiered at 'Digital Existence III: Living with Automation' an international conference at Sigtuna Foundation in Sweden, organized by BioMe project led by prof. Amanda Lagerkvist at Uppsala University and featuring Joanna Zylinska, Katherine Hayles, Nick Couldry, Sarah Pink and others. The performance is based on an essay written for a book 'The Computer as Seen at the End of the Human Age', edited by Olle Essvik (Rojal Förlag, Göteborg 2022). A dialog between several repurposed 'smart' speakers is accompanied by a spontaneously evolving soundscape generated by those devices' electromagnetic fields and micro-currents that make them operational. The piece is a component of an artistic inquiry into other, imperceptible voices and sonic realms that underlie and sustain contemporary technologies of voice recognition, synthesis and biometric capture. The project is part of  BioMe: Existential Challenges and Ethical Imperatives of Bio-metric AI in Everyday Lifeworlds led by professor Amanda Lagerkvist at the Informatics and Media Department of Uppsala University.

  • Chemical Studies on Uranium Extraction from Concentrated Phosphoric Acid by Using PC88A and DBBP Mixture.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry. - : Springer. - 0236-5731 .- 1588-2780. ; 290, s. 353-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Liquid–liquid extraction of U (VI) from concentrated phosphoric acid by using (2-ethyl hexyl) phosphonic acid, mono (2-ethyl hexyl) ester (PC88A) and di-butyl butyl phosphonate (DBBP) has been investigated. The effect of different factors affecting the extraction process (PC88A concentration, DBBP concentration, shaking time, aqueous/organic phase ratio, phosphoric acid concentration and effect of diluents) have been investigated. The obtained data of temperature on the extraction showed that the enthalpy change is −17.15 kJ mol−1. Uranium was extracted from the strip liquor by using di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and tri-octyl phosphine oxide mixture and finally converted to a high purity UO3 product using precipitation with hydrogen peroxide and heat treatment at 365 °C.

  • Exponential decay of the resonance error in numerical homogenization via parabolic and elliptic cell problems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Comptes rendus. Mathematique. - : Elsevier BV. - 1631-073X .- 1778-3569. ; 357:6, s. 545-551
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents two new approaches for finding the homogenized coefficients of multiscale elliptic PDEs. Standard approaches for computing the homogenized coefficients suffer from the so-called resonance error, originating from a mismatch between the true and the computational boundary conditions. Our new methods, based on solutions of parabolic and elliptic cell problems, result in an exponential decay of the resonance error.

  • Pitch-Informed Instrument Assignment using a Deep Convolutional Network with Multiple Kernel Shapes
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a deep convolutional neural network for performing note-level instrument assignment. Given a polyphonic multi-instrumental music signal along with its ground truth or predicted notes, the objective is to assign an instrumental source for each note. This problem is addressed as a pitch-informed classification task where each note is analysed individually. We also propose to utilise several kernel shapes in the convolutional layers in order to facilitate learning of timbre-discriminative feature maps. Experiments on the MusicNet dataset using 7 instrument classes show that our approach is able to achieve an average F-score of 0.904 when the original multi-pitch annotations are used as the pitch information for the system, and that it also excels if the note information is provided using third-party multi-pitch estimation algorithms. We also include ablation studies investigating the effects of the use of multiple kernel shapes and comparing different input representations for the audio and the note-related information.

  • Arktiska spår : Natur och kultur i rörelse
  • 2020
