    • Den här boken bygger vidare på en broschyr som gavs ut år 2000 av Jordbruksverket och Skogsstyrelsen som hette Fladdermössen i Landskapet. Idén med broschyren var att berätta för markägare hur man kunde kombinera brukandet med fladdermössen. Den här boken bygger vidare på broschyren, det vill säga huvudsyftet med boken är fortfarande att berätta om hur fladdermöss kan bevaras samtidigt som man använder landskapet för jord- och skogsbruk, men också hur olika exploateringar påverkar fladdermössen. Väldigt mycket har hänt när det gäller kunskapsläget om fladdermöss sedan år 2000. Vi vet nu betydligt mer om olika arters förekomst i Sverige, både om utbredning och numerär, bland annat tack vare att inventeringstekniken har utvecklats avsevärt. Intresset för fladdermöss har också ökat, bland annat genom föreningen BatLife Sweden. En annan viktig förändring är att skyddet av fladdermöss har stärkts genom Art- och habitatdirektivet som i Sverige är implementerat genom Artskyddsförordningen. Så vid omarbetningen av den lilla broschyren växte projektet till en bok. Boken har medfinansierats av Skogssällskapet, Pettersson Elektronik AB och Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt (SVA). Arbetet med att bevara fladdermöss i Sverige bedrivs i nära samarbete mellan forskning, myndigheter och ideella krafter. Den här skriften är ett resultat av detta samarbete. Jag vill särskilt tacka Sofia Gylje Blank (Artdatabanken), Marielle Gustafsson (Länsstyrelsen i Jönköpings län) och Marie Nedinge (Naturvårdsverket). Boken innehåller ett antal nya illustrationer som Disa Eklöf (Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt, SVA) har bidragit med. Slutligen vill jag tacka redaktören Håkan Tunón som format boken, hjälpt till med synpunkter och idéer och skött allt praktiskt kring publiceringen.

    • This volume outlines and analyses ethical issues actualized by applying a precautionary approach to the regulation of new biotechnologies. It presents a novel way of categorizing and comparing biotechnologies from a precautionary standpoint. Based on this, it addresses underlying philosophical problems regarding the ethical assessment of decision-making under uncertainty and ignorance, and discusses how risks and possible benefits of such technologies should be balanced from an ethical standpoint. It argues on conceptual and ethical grounds for a technology neutral regulation as well as for a regulation that not only checks new technologies but also requires old, inferior ones to be phased out. It demonstrates how difficult ethical issues regarding the extent and ambition of precautionary policies need to be handled by such a regulation, and presents an overarching framework for doing so.

They are examples of models used by scientists to isolate and study particular aspects of the world around us. This book begins by introducing the concept of a scientific model from an intuitive perspective, drawing parallels to mental models and artistic representations. It then recounts the history of modelling from the 16th century up until the present day. The iterative process of model building is described and discussed in the context of complex models with high predictive accuracy versus simpler models that provide more of a conceptual understanding. To illustrate the diversity of opinions within the scientific community, we also present the results of an interview study, in which ten scientists from different disciplines describe their views on modelling and how models feature in their work. Lastly, it includes a number of worked examples that span different modelling approaches and techniques. It provides a comprehensive introduction to scientific models and shows how models are constructed and used in modern science. It also addresses the approach to, and the culture surrounding modelling in different scientific disciplines.   • The Largest Avian Radiation: The Evolution of Perching Birds, or the Order of Passeriformes

    • This book reveals the remarkable new history of how passerines diversified and dispersed across the entire world. It also presents and explains the new classification, which reflects the phylogenetic history. The new insights reveal that many of the old evolutionary lineages comprise only a few species that remained in their area of origin or underwent limited dispersal. Only a small number of groups underwent significant proliferation of new species and just five (of 145) passerine families are represented on all continents but Antarctica. Even so, the global variation in species richness generally correlates well with the variation in productivity across different environments. We see how a seemingly constant overall rate of evolution of new species is possible because of rapid proliferation in new ecological niches, including archipelagos, and an extraordinary accumulation of endemic species in certain tropical mountain ranges. In addition to describing the revised evolutionary history of passerine birds, the authors try to identify adaptational changes, including shifts in life history strategies, that underlie major evolutionary expansions.
