  • Team Halmstad Approach to Cooperative Driving in the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge 2016
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on intelligent transportation systems (Print). - Piscataway, N.J. : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 1524-9050 .- 1558-0016. ; 19:4, s. 1248-1261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is an experience report of team Halmstad from the participation in a competition organised by the i-GAME project, the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge 2016. The competition was held in Helmond, The Netherlands, during the last weekend of May 2016. We give an overview of our car’s control and communication system that was developed for the competition following the requirements and specifications of the i-GAME project. In particular, we describe our implementation of cooperative adaptive cruise control, our solution to the communication and logging requirements, as well as the high level decision making support. For the actual competition we did not manage to completely reach all of the goals set out by the organizers as well as ourselves. However, this did not prevent us from outperforming the competition. Moreover, the competition allowed us to collect data for further evaluation of our solutions to cooperative driving. Thus, we discuss what we believe were the strong points of our system, and discuss post-competition evaluation of the developments that were not fully integrated into our system during competition time. © 2000-2011 IEEE.

  • Bayesian Network Representation of Meaningful Patterns in Electricity Distribution Grids
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE International Energy Conference (ENERGYCON). - : IEEE. - 9781467384636
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The diversity of components in electricity distribution grids makes it impossible, or at least very expensive, to deploy monitoring and fault diagnostics to every individual element. Therefore, power distribution companies are looking for cheap and reliable approaches that can help them to estimate the condition of their assets and to predict the when and where the faults may occur. In this paper we propose a simplified representation of failure patterns within historical faults database, which facilitates visualization of association rules using Bayesian Networks. Our approach is based on exploring the failure history and detecting correlations between different features available in those records. We show that a small subset of the most interesting rules is enough to obtain a good and sufficiently accurate approximation of the original dataset. A Bayesian Network created from those rules can serve as an easy to understand visualization of the most relevant failure patterns. In addition, by varying the threshold values of support and confidence that we consider interesting, we are able to control the tradeoff between accuracy of the model and its complexity in an intuitive way. © 2016 IEEE

  • Improving the Quality of User Generated Data Sets for Activity Recognition
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence, UCAMI 2016, PT II. - Amsterdam : Springer Publishing Company. - 9783319487991 - 9783319487984 ; , s. 104-110
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is fully appreciated that progress in the development of data driven approaches to activity recognition are being hampered due to the lack of large scale, high quality, annotated data sets. In an effort to address this the Open Data Initiative (ODI) was conceived as a potential solution for the creation of shared resources for the collection and sharing of open data sets. As part of this process, an analysis was undertaken of datasets collected using a smart environment simulation tool. A noticeable difference was found in the first 1-2 cycles of users generating data. Further analysis demonstrated the effects that this had on the development of activity recognition models with a decrease of performance for both support vector machine and decision tree based classifiers. The outcome of the study has led to the production of a strategy to ensure an initial training phase is considered prior to full scale collection of the data.

  • Attribute-based encryption with enforceable obligations
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cryptographic Engineering. - Heidelberg : Springer. - 2190-8508 .- 2190-8516. ; 13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Attribute-based encryption (ABE) is a cryptographic mechanism that provides fine-grained access control to encrypted data, which can thus be stored in, e.g., public clouds. However, ABE schemes lack the notion of obligations, which is common in attribute-based access control systems such as eXtensible Access Control Markup Language and Usage Control. Obligations are used to define and enforce extra constraints that happen before approving or denying an access request. In this paper, we propose OB-ABE, a system for extending any classical ABE with enforceable obligations. Our system architecture has as core component trusted hardware enclaves, implemented with SGX, used for enforcing obligations. We employ ProVerif to formally model OB-ABE and verify its main property called "enforceable obligations," i.e., if a message is encrypted along with an obligation, then the message can be decrypted only after enforcing the attached obligation. OB-ABE has two more properties: (i) OB-ABE is a "conservative extension" of the underlying ABE scheme, preserving its security properties; (ii) OB-ABE is "backward compatible" in the sense that any ciphertext produced by an ABE scheme can be decrypted by its extended OB-ABE version, and moreover, a ciphertext produced by an OB-ABE scheme can be decrypted by its underlying ABE scheme provided that the ciphertext does not have obligations attached. We also implement in C using Intel SGX a prototype of an OB-ABE extending the well-known ciphertext-policy ABE.

  • Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETS) : status, results, and challenges
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Telecommunications Systems. - : Springer. - 1018-4864 .- 1572-9451. ; 50:4, s. 217-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent advances in hardware, software, and communication technologies are enabling the design and implementation of a whole range of different types of networks that are being deployed in various environments. One such network that has received a lot of interest in the last couple of years is the Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET). VANET has become an active area of research, standardization, and development because it has tremendous potential to improve vehicle and road safety, traffic efficiency, and convenience as well as comfort to both drivers and passengers. Recent research efforts have placed a strong emphasis on novel VANET design architectures and implementations. A lot of VANET research work have focused on specific areas including routing, broadcasting, Quality of Service (QoS), and security. We survey some of the recent research results in these areas. We present a review of wireless access standards for VANETs, and describe some of the recent VANET trials and deployments in the US, Japan, and the European Union. In addition, we also briefly present some of the simulators currently available to VANET researchers for VANET simulations and we assess their benefits and limitations. Finally, we outline some of the VANET research challenges that still need to be addressed to enable the ubiquitous deployment and widespead adoption of scalable, reliable, robust, and secure VANET architectures, protocols, technologies, and services.

  • Obstacle Detection For Thin Horizontal Structures
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: World Congress on Engineering and Computer Science. - Hong Kong : International Association of Engineers. - 9789889867102 ; , s. 689-693
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many vision-based approaches for obstacle detection often state that vertical thin structure is of importance, e.g. poles and trees. However, there are also problem in detecting thin horizontal structures. In an industrial case there are horizontal objects, e.g. cables and fork lifts, and slanting objects, e.g. ladders, that also has to be detected. This paper focuses on the problem to detect thin horizontal structures. The system uses three cameras, situated as a horizontal pair and a vertical pair, which makes it possible to also detect thin horizontal structures. A comparison between a sparse disparity map based on edges and a dense disparity map with a column and row filter is made. Both methods use the Sum of Absolute Difference to compute the disparity maps. Special interest has been in scenes with thin horizontal objects. Tests show that the sparse dense method based on the Canny edge detector works better for the environments we have tested.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic had a dramatic impact on our lives and living. In higher education, it led to a swift shift from on-campus to online education resulting in practices of emergency remote teaching through virtual classrooms. In this project, we seek to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that this abrupt, enforced change to online education entailed for faculty and students in Sweden and Finland. We aim to examine the evolution of online work and study practices, their impact on the teaching and learning environment, and new expectations imposed on the faculty and students. Our goal is to enhance the theoretical understanding of e-learning, developing guidelines on how to make online education effective, exploring the impact of pandemics on the future of higher education.

  • A hybrid dependency-based approach for Urdu sentiment analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - London : Springer Nature. - 2045-2322. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the digital age, social media has emerged as a significant platform, generating a vast amount of raw data daily. This data reflects the opinions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, races, cultures, and age groups, spanning a wide range of topics. Businesses can leverage this data to extract valuable insights, improve their services, and effectively reach a broader audience based on users’ expressed opinions on social media platforms. To harness the potential of this extensive and unstructured data, a deep understanding of Natural Language Processing (NLP) is crucial. Existing approaches for sentiment analysis (SA) often rely on word co-occurrence frequencies, which prove inefficient in practical scenarios. Identifying this research gap, this paper presents a framework for concept-level sentiment analysis, aiming to enhance the accuracy of sentiment analysis (SA). A comprehensive Urdu language dataset was constructed by collecting data from YouTube, consisting of various talks and reviews on topics such as movies, politics, and commercial products. The dataset was further enriched by incorporating language rules and Deep Neural Networks (DNN) to optimize polarity detection. For sentiment analysis, the proposed framework employs predefined rules to trigger sentiment flow from words to concepts, leveraging the dependency relations among different words in a sentence based on Urdu language grammatical rules. In cases where predefined patterns are not triggered, the framework seamlessly switches to its sub-symbolic counterpart, passing the data to the DNN for sentence classification. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework surpasses state-of-the-art approaches, including LSTM, CNN, SVM, LR, and MLP, achieving an improvement of 6–7% on Urdu dataset. In conclusion, this research paper introduces a novel framework for concept-level sentiment analysis of Urdu language data sourced from social media platforms. By combining language rules and DNN, the proposed framework demonstrates superior performance compared to existing methodologies, showcasing its effectiveness in accurately analyzing sentiment in Urdu text data.

  • Every Second Counts : Integrating Edge Computing and Service Oriented Architecture for Automatic Emergency Management
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Transportation. - London : Hindawi Limited. - 0197-6729 .- 2042-3195. ; 2018
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Emergency management has long been recognized as a social challenge due to the criticality of the response time. In emergency situations such as severe traffic accidents, minimizing the response time, which requires close collaborations between all stakeholders involved and distributed intelligence support, leads to greater survival chance of the injured. However, the current response system is far from efficient, despite the rapid development of information and communication technologies. This paper presents an automated collaboration framework for emergency management that coordinates all stakeholders within the emergency response system and fully automates the rescue process. Applying the concept of multiaccess edge computing architecture, as well as choreography of the service oriented architecture, the system allows seamless coordination between multiple organizations in a distributed way through standard web services. A service choreography is designed to globally model the emergency management process from the time an accident occurs until the rescue is finished. The choreography can be synthesized to generate detailed specification on peer-to-peer interaction logic, and then the specification can be enacted and deployed on cloud infrastructures.
