  • Visual Analysis of Online Social Media to Open Up the Investigation of Stance Phenomena
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Information Visualization. - : Sage Publications. - 1473-8716 .- 1473-8724. ; 15:2, s. 93-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Online social media are a perfect text source for stance analysis. Stance in human communication is concerned with speaker attitudes, beliefs, feelings and opinions. Expressions of stance are associated with the speakers' view of what they are talking about and what is up for discussion and negotiation in the intersubjective exchange. Taking stance is thus crucial for the social construction of meaning. Increased knowledge of stance can be useful for many application fields such as business intelligence, security analytics, or social media monitoring. In order to process large amounts of text data for stance analyses, linguists need interactive tools to explore the textual sources as well as the processed data based on computational linguistics techniques. Both original texts and derived data are important for refining the analyses iteratively. In this work, we present a visual analytics tool for online social media text data that can be used to open up the investigation of stance phenomena. Our approach complements traditional linguistic analysis techniques and is based on the analysis of utterances associated with two stance categories: sentiment and certainty. Our contributions include (1) the description of a novel web-based solution for analyzing the use and patterns of stance meanings and expressions in human communication over time; and (2) specialized techniques used for visualizing analysis provenance and corpus overview/navigation. We demonstrate our approach by means of text media on a highly controversial scandal with regard to expressions of anger and provide an expert review from linguists who have been using our tool.

  • Ecosystem Models Based on Artificial Intelligence
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 34th Workshop of the Swedish Artificial Intelligence Society, SAIS 2022. - : IEEE.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ecosystem models can be used for understanding general phenomena of evolution, ecology, and ethology. They can also be used for analyzing and predicting the ecological consequences of human activities on specific ecosystems, e.g., the effects of agriculture, forestry, construction, hunting, and fishing. We argue that powerful ecosystem models need to include reasonable models of the physical environment and of animal behavior. We also argue that several well-known ecosystem models are unsatisfactory in this regard. Then we present the open-source ecosystem simulator Ecotwin, which is built on top of the game engine Unity. To model a specific ecosystem in Ecotwin, we first generate a 3D Unity model of the physical environment, based on topographic or bathymetric data. Then we insert digital 3D models of the organisms of interest into the environment model. Each organism is equipped with a genome and capable of sexual or asexual reproduction. An organism dies if it runs out of some vital resource or reaches its maximum age. The animal models are equipped with behavioral models that include sensors, actions, reward signals, and mechanisms of learning and decision-making. Finally, we illustrate how Ecotwin works by building and running one terrestrial and one marine ecosystem model.

  • Enhancing Salient Features in Volumetric Data Using Illumination and Transfer Functions
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The visualization of volume data is a fundamental component in the medical domain. Volume data is used in the clinical work-flow to diagnose patients and is therefore of uttermost importance. The amount of data is rapidly increasing as sensors, such as computed tomography scanners, become capable of measuring more details and gathering more data over time. Unfortunately, the increasing amount of data makes it computationally challenging to interactively apply high quality methods to increase shape and depth perception. Furthermore, methods for exploring volume data has mostly been designed for experts, which prohibits novice users from exploring volume data. This thesis aims to address these challenges by introducing efficient methods for enhancing salient features through high quality illumination as well as methods for intuitive volume data exploration.Humans are interpreting the world around them by observing how light interacts with objects. Shadows enable us to better determine distances while shifts in color enable us to better distinguish objects and identify their shape. These concepts are also applicable to computer generated content. The perception in volume data visualization can therefore be improved by simulating real-world light interaction. This thesis presents efficient methods that are capable of interactively simulating realistic light propagation in volume data. In particular, this work shows how a multi-resolution grid can be used to encode the attenuation of light from all directions using spherical harmonics and thereby enable advanced interactive dynamic light configurations. Two methods are also presented that allow photon mapping calculations to be focused on visually changing areas. The results demonstrate that photon mapping can be used in interactive volume visualization for both static and time-varying volume data.Efficient and intuitive exploration of volume data requires methods that are easy to use and reflect the objects that were measured. A value that has been collected by a sensor commonly represents the material existing within a small neighborhood around a location. Recreating the original materials is difficult since the value represents a mixture of them. This is referred to as the partial-volume problem. A method is presented that derives knowledge from the user in order to reconstruct the original materials in a way which is more in line with what the user would expect. Sharp boundaries are visualized where the certainty is high while uncertain areas are visualized with fuzzy boundaries. The volume exploration process of mapping data values to optical properties through the transfer function has traditionally been complex and performed by expert users. A study at a science center showed that visitors favor the presented dynamic gallery method compared to the most commonly used transfer function editor.

  • On the Generalization Ability of Retrieval-Enhanced Transformers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Findings of the Association for Computational Linguistics: EACL 2023, pages 1485–1493, Dubrovnik, Croatia. - : Association for Computational Linguistics. ; , s. 1485-1493
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent work on the Retrieval-Enhanced Transformer (RETRO) model has shown impressive results: off-loading memory from trainable weights to a retrieval database can significantly improve language modeling and match the performance of non-retrieval models that are an order of magnitude larger in size. It has been suggested that at least some of this performance gain is due to non-trivial generalization based on both model weights and retrieval. In this paper, we try to better understand the relative contributions of these two components. We find that the performance gains from retrieval to a very large extent originate from overlapping tokens between the database and the test data, suggesting less of non-trivial generalization than previously assumed. More generally, our results point to the challenges of evaluating the generalization of retrieval-augmented language models such as RETRO, as even limited token overlap may significantly decrease test-time loss. We release our code and model at https://github.com/TobiasNorlund/retro

  • The Comparative Evaluation of Test Prioritization Approaches in an Industrial Study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proc. - IEEE Int. Conf. Softw. Qual., Reliab., Secur. Companion, QRS-C. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9798350359398 ; , s. 35-44
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many test prioritisation techniques have been proposed in order to improve test effectiveness of Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines. Particularly, diversity-based testing (DBT) has shown promising and competitive results to improve test effectiveness. We report on a case study considering the CI pipeline of Axis Communications in Sweden. We compared three different prioritisation approaches (i.e., diversity, failure history and time) in terms of their impact on coverage, failure detection rates and reduction on test execution time. Our results reveal that DBT is the best candidate to provide feature coverage, whereas failure rate prioritisation yields better failure coverage. Time-based prioritisation is not a reliable approach to provide cost-effective testing. Moreover, DBT would allow stakeholders to receive quick feedback on many combinations of integrated features to verify their code changes. Our participants report that developers are mainly interested in: (i) receiving quick feedback on a high combination of integrated features to verify their code changes, and (ii) associate their test suites to confidence scores representing the risk of missing failures given that fewer tests are executed.

  • Exploring C2 Capability and Effectiveness in Challenging Situations : Interorganizational Crisis Management, Military Operations and Cyber Defence
  • 2019
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Modern societies are affected by various threats and hazards, including natural disasters, cyber-attacks, extreme weather events and inter-state conflicts. Managing these challenging situations requires immediate actions, suspension of ordinary procedures, decision making under uncertainty and coordinated action. In other words, challenging situations put high demands on the command and control (C2) capability. To strengthen the capability of C2, it is vital to identify the prerequisites for effective coordination and direction within the domain of interest. This thesis explores C2 capability and effectiveness in three domains: interorganizational crisis management, military command and control, and cyber defence operations. The thesis aims to answer three research questions: (1) What constitutes C2 capability? (2) What constitutes C2 effectiveness? and (3) How can C2 effectiveness be assessed? The work was carried out as two case studies and one systematic literature review. The main contributions of the thesis are the identification of perspectives of C2 capability in challenging situations and an overview of approaches to C2 effectiveness assessment. Based on the results of the three studies, six recurring perspectives of capability in the domains studied were identified: interaction (collaboration), direction and coordination, relationships, situation awareness, resilience and preparedness. In the domains there are differences concerning which perspectives that are most emphasized in order obtain C2 capability. C2 effectiveness is defined as the extent to which a C2 system is successful in achieving its intended result. The thesis discusses the interconnectedness of performance and effectiveness measures, and concludes that there is not a united view on the difference between measures of effectiveness and measures of performance. Different approaches to effectiveness assessment were identified, where assessment may be conducted based on one specific issue, in relation to a defined goal for a C2 function or using a more exploratory approach.

  • On a Need to Know Basis : A Conceptual and Methodological Framework for Modelling and Analysis of Information Demand in an Enterprise Context
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • While the amount of information, readily available to workers in information- and knowledge intensive business- and industrial contexts, only seem to increase with every day, those workers continue to have difficulties in finding and managing relevant and needed information despite the numerous technical, organisational, and practical approaches promising a remedy to the situation. In this dissertation it is claimed that the main reason for the shortcomings of such approaches are a lack of understanding of the underlying information demand people and organisations have in relation to performing work tasks. Furthermore, it is also argued that while this issue, even with a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms, still would remain a complex problem, it would at least be manageable. To facilitate the development of demand-driven information solutions and organisational change with respect to information demand the dissertation sets out to first provide the empirical and theoretical foundation for a method for modelling and analysing information demand in enterprise contexts and then presents an actual method. As a part of this effort, a conceptual framework for reasoning about information demand is presented together with experiences from a number of empirical cases focusing on both method generation and -validation. A methodological framework is then defined based on principles and ideas grounded in the empirical background and finally a number of method components are introduced in terms of notations, conceptual focus, and procedural approaches for capturing and representation of various aspects of information demand. The dissertation ends with a discussion concerning the validity of the presented method and results in terms of utility, relevance, and applicability with respect to industrial context and needs, as well as possible and planned future improvements and developments of the method.

  • Selecting software reliability growth models and improving their predictive accuracy using historical projects data
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Systems and Software. - : Elsevier BV. - 0164-1212 .- 1873-1228. ; 98, s. 59-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During software development two important decisions organizations have to make are: how to allocate testing resources optimally and when the software is ready for release. SRGMs (software reliability growth models) provide empirical basis for evaluating and predicting reliability of software systems. When using SRGMs for the purpose of optimizing testing resource allocation, the model's ability to accurately predict the expected defect inflow profile is useful. For assessing release readiness, the asymptote accuracy is the most important attribute. Although more than hundred models for software reliability have been proposed and evaluated over time, there exists no clear guide on which models should be used for a given software development process or for a given industrial domain. Using defect inflow profiles from large software projects from Ericsson, Volvo Car Corporation and Saab, we evaluate commonly used SRGMs for their ability to provide empirical basis for making these decisions. We also demonstrate that using defect intensity growth rate from earlier projects increases the accuracy of the predictions. Our results show that Logistic and Gompertz models are the most accurate models; we further observe that classifying a given project based on its expected shape of defect inflow help to select the most appropriate model.
