  • Lost and Gained in Translation: Adoption of Open Source Software Development at Hewlett-Packard
  • 2008
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • What happens when an organization form that has emerged in one context is brought into a different context? Specifically, what happens when open source software development (OSSD), which has emerged as a form of peer-to-peer, spontaneous, self-regulated organizing outside of traditional organizations, is adopted and adapted by a traditional, hierarchical, high-performing software development organization? Using an actor-network theory (ANT) approach, this paper explores the process by which Hewlett-Packard (HP) molded open source software development into a proprietary software development approach called "Progressive Open Source" (POS). With the help of actor-network theory, we understand this as a process of translation and find that some of the central characteristics of OSSD where lost in the translation into POS, but also that other characteristics were gained. We also find that the changes in the character of POS compared to OSSD were partly unanticipated and unplanned and that they can be understood as a result of negotiations, tinkering and interlocking of actors. Implications for research and for organizations considering adoption of OSSD are discussed.

  • AWAKENING TO ALGORITHMIC TRANSGRESSIONS: NON-USER DISCOVERY OF ALGORITHMIC DECISION MAKING
  • 2023
  • In: Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings. - New York : Academy of Management. - 0065-0668 .- 2151-6561.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Algorithmic decision-making has become increasingly prevalent in civil society, often without individuals' awareness that decisions targeting them are delegated to machines. There is a growing need to understand how non-users can begin to suspect that they have been targeted by an algorithm and how they can uncover the hidden nature associated with these systems. In resource-scarce environments, such as the public sector, tracing transgressions to the algorithm is crucial to protect social justice and public trust in institutions. Building on the work of von Krogh (2018), this research examines the emotional, abductive, and collective work associated with algorithmic discovery.

  • The service robots have already arrived: Virtual agent features and behaviors that boost customer satisfaction in the service encounter
  • 2020
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Virtual agents (VAs) are already used as representatives of the firm in service encounters, and this study of customers’ interactions with existing VAs explores a set of VA features and behaviors with respect to their potential to influence customer satisfaction. The study also examines perceived VA humanness as a mechanism (i.e., a mediating variable)for this influence. The results show that a set of VA features and behaviors that are typical for human employees contributed to ascribing humanness to VAs, and perceived VA humanness mediated the impact of both features and behaviors of VA on customer satisfaction. Thus, what has been learned during several decades of research on the satisfaction-boosting potential of the human frontline employee appears to be useful points of reference for those who are concerned with understanding and designing VAs appearing in service encounters.

  • The role of end-users for wireless information systems usage
  • 2006
  • In: Advances in information systems development : bridging the gap between academia and industry : proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Systems Development (ISD 2005) held in Karlstad (Sweden) 14th-17th August 2005. - Boston, MA : Springer US. ; , s. 387-399
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Among best practices recommended by leading CIOs who participated in the "State of the CIO 2003" survey (Overby and Varon 2003), user involvement was ranked third within the actions they deemed most critical to successfully lead IT in their organizations (Overby 2003). Today's real challenge consists of figuring out who to invite to the party and how to get them involved. This paper analyses the involvement of users during the implementation of wireless information systems from an organizational innovation perspective. The coincident appearance of a widely popular innovation, wireless information systems and the renewed interest for sociotechnical theories, provides the opportunity to further develop the understanding of user involvement in technology management processes. This is done through a literature review on user involvement and the analysis of a case study about the implementation of a wireless information system in a forestry and sawmill company located in the northern part of Sweden.
