  • Data Mining Medieval Documents by Word Spotting
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2011 Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing. - New York : ACM. - 9781450309165 ; , s. 75-82
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents novel results for word spotting based on dynamic time warping applied to medieval manuscripts in Latin and Old Swedish. A target word is marked by a user, and the method automatically finds similar word forms in the document by matching them against the target. The method automatically identifies pages and lines. We show that our method improves accuracy compared to earlier proposals for this kind of handwriting. An advantage of the new method is that it performs matching within a text line without presupposing that the difficult problem of segmenting the text line into individual words has been solved. We evaluate our word spotting implementation on two medieval manuscripts representing two script types. We also show that it can be useful by helping a user find words in a manuscript and present graphs of word statistics as a function of page number.

  • Early Recognition of Smoke in Digital Video
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Advances in Communications, Computers, Systems, Circuits and Devices. - Athens : World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society. - 9789604742509 ; , s. 301-306
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a method for direct smoke detection from video without enhancement pre-processing steps. Smoke is characterized by transparency, gray color and irregularities in motion, which are hard to describe with the basic image features. A method for robust smoke description using a color balancing algorithm and turbulence calculation is presented in this work. Background extraction is used as a first step in processing. All moving objects are candidates for smoke. We make use of Gray World algorithm and compare the results with the original video sequence in order to extract image features within some particular gray scale interval. As a last step we calculate shape complexity of turbulent phenomena and apply it to the incoming video stream. As a result we extract only smoke from the video. Features such shadows, illumination changes and people will not be mistaken for smoke by the algorithm. This method gives an early indication of smoke in the observed scene.

  • Solving combined geospatial tasks using 2D and 3D bar charts
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Information Visualisation (IV), 2012 16th International Conference. - 9780769547718 ; , s. 157-163
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a user study that investigates 2D and 3D visualizations of bar charts in geographic maps. The task to be solved by the participants in this study required estimation of the ratio of two different spatial distance measures and relative ranking among potential candidates. The results of this experiment show that subjects were equally fast and accurate when using both the 2D and 3D visualizations. Visual discomfort was reported by almost half of the test population, but performance was not affected. Our study also showed that frequent game players did not benefit more from a 3D visualization than inexperienced game-players.

  • Design science for Small Scale Studies : Recommendations for Undergraduates and Junior Researchers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Conference on Research Methodology for Business and Management Studies. - Reading (UK) : Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. - 9781914587719 - 9781914587726 ; , s. 87-92
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design science is a research methodology that can be applied for both small scale studies at undergraduate level and for large scale application in the industry. Design science is a research methodology with several branches, with slightly different processes built around a common foundation. This paper has a focus on the branch developed by Johannesson and Perjons, and the five-phase model that is included in this branch: 1) explicate problem, 2) define requirements, 3) design and develop artefact, 4) demonstrate artefact, and 5) evaluate artefact. All these five phases must of course be carried out in a complete large-scale project in many real-world developments. However, the problem with applying a design science research project for undergraduates is that a thorough implementation of all the five phases is often too demanding for a Bachelor’s or a Master's thesis. A reason for this is that several of the phases are better carried out in an iterative manner to obtain a quality result, which is time-consuming. The aim of this paper is to discuss the challenges and opportunities in applying design science for small scale studies, such as those conducted by undergraduates in their theses or by researchers new to the field. Based on this discussion, the paper concludes with a set of recommendations for how the design science methodology can be modified and applied to accommodate these smaller studies. The main recommendation is, as the principle for quality research, to delimit and to choose a specific focus that is carried out in depth. Some examples of focuses, that also are recommended by Johannesson and Perjons, are requirements and development focused design science research or evaluation focused design science research. An interesting follow-up to this position paper would be to study the application of design science in Bachelor’s theses and where the emphasis is placed? Moreover, it would be interesting to investigate how design science is applied by researchers and compare if their emphasis in the design science methodology differs from that of undergraduates.

  • Knowledge Based Single Building Extraction and Recognition
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings WSEAS International Conference on Computer Engineering and Applications, 2014. - : WSEAS Press. - 9789604743612 ; , s. 29-35
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building facade extraction is the primary step in the recognition process in outdoor scenes. It is also achallenging task since each building can be viewed from different angles or under different lighting conditions. Inoutdoor imagery, regions, such as sky, trees, pavement cause interference for a successful building facade recognition. In this paper we propose a knowledge based approach to automatically segment out the whole facade or majorparts of the facade from outdoor scene. The found building regions are then subjected to recognition process. Thesystem is composed of two modules: segmentation of building facades region module and facade recognition module. In the facade segmentation module, color processing and objects position coordinates are used. In the facaderecognition module, Chamfer metrics are applied. In real time recognition scenario, the image with a building isfirst analyzed in order to extract the facade region, which is then compared to a database with feature descriptors inorder to find a match. The results show that the recognition rate is dependent on a precision of building extractionpart, which in turn, depends on a homogeneity of colors of facades.

Threshold concepts transform a student's view of the discipline; before being learned, they can block a student's progress. In this paper, we propose that in computing, skills, in addition to concepts, can sometimes be thresholds. Some students report finding skills more difficult than concepts. We discuss some computing skills that may be thresholds and compare threshold skills and threshold concepts.

  • An approach for repairing incoherent ontologies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ISWC 2021 Posters, Demos and Industry Tracks: From Novel Ideas to Industrial Practice.. - Aachen, Germany : CEUR Workshop Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quality of ontologies and their alignments is crucial for developing high-quality ontology-based applications. In this paper we propose an approach for repairing incoherent ontologies and ontology networks that is based on axiom weakening and completion.
