- This article displays a design ethnographic case study on an ongoing machine learning project at a Scandinavian gamification start-up company. From late 2020 until early 2021, the project produced a machine learning proof of concept, later implemented in the gamification start-up´s application programming interface to offer smart gamification. The initial results show promise in using prediction models to automate the cluster model selection affording more functional, autonomous, and scalable user segments that are faster to implement. The finding provides opportunities for gamification (e.g., in learning analytics and health informatics). An identified challenge was performance; the neural networks required hyperparameter fine-tuning, which is time-consuming and limits scalability. Interesting further investigations should consider the neural network fine-tuning process, but also attempt to verify the effectiveness of the cluster models selection compared with a control group.

- Approaches to determining the factuality of diagnoses and findings in clinical text tend to rely on dictionaries of marker words for uncertainty and negation. Here, a method for semi-automatically expanding a dictionary of marker words using distributional semantics is presented and evaluated. It is shown that ranking candidates for inclusion according to their proximity to cluster centroids of semantically similar seed words is more successful than ranking them according to proximity to each individual seed word.

- Computing facilities are an essential part of the fabric of our society, and an ever-increasing number of computing devices is deployed within the environment in which we live. The vision of pervasive computing is becoming real. To exploit the opportunities offered by pervasiveness, we need to revisit the classic software development methods to meet new requirements: (1) pervasive applications should be able to dynamically configure themselves, also benefiting from third-party functionalities discovered at run time and (2) pervasive applications should be aware of, and resilient to, environmental changes. In this chapter we focus on the software architecture, with the goal of facilitating both the development and the run-time adaptation of pervasive applications. More specifically we investigate the adoption of the REST architectural style to deal with pervasive environment issues. Indeed, we believe that, although REST has been introduced by observing and analyzing the structure of the Internet, its field of applicability is not restricted to it. The chapter also illustrates a proof-of-concept example, and then discusses the advantages of choosing REST over other styles in pervasive environments.

- The computing and networking capacities of today’s wireless portable devices allow for pervasive services, which are seamlessly networked. Indeed, wireless handheld devices now embed the necessary resources to act as both service clients and providers. However, the seamless networking of services remains challenged by the inherent mobility and resource constraints of devices, which make services a priori highly volatile. This paper discusses the design, implementation and experimentation of the ubiSOAP service-oriented middleware, which leverages wireless networking capacities to effectively enable the seamless networking of services. ubiSOAP specifically defines a layered communication middleware that underlies standard SOAP-based middleware, hence supporting legacy services while exploiting nowadays pervasive connectivity.

- We present an evaluation of a simple method to find architectural problems in a product line of computer games. The method uses dependencies (direct, indirect, or no) to automatically classify types in the implementation to high-level components in the product line architecture. We use a commercially available tool to analyse dependencies in the source code. The automatic classification of types is compared to a manual classification by the developer, and all mismatches are reported. To evaluate the method, we inspect the source code and look for a pre-defined set of architectural problems in all types. We compare the set of types that contained problems to the set of types where the manual and automatic classification disagreed to determine precision and recall. We also investigate what changes are needed to correct the found mismatches by either designing and implementing changes in the source code or refining the automatic classification. Our evaluation shows that the simple method is effective at detecting architectural problems in a product line of four games. The method is lightweight, customisable and easy to implement early in the development cycle.

- The notion of network structure for social relations dates back half a century. Nowadays people form social networks offline as well as online. At an online community people are connected trough information exchange of sorts. Interest groups form often forums to aid each other and discuss things. Programmers are no exception and a question and answer site called Stack Overflow has been up and running since 2008. Our focus is to find patterns of how people interact on this online community and see if we can find expert users. We find 4 different ways to categorize experts, which result in different rankings. We also investigate how expertise is divided among topics, and find some overlap with the global ranking.

- In recent years the Swedish Police Force (SPF) have encountered greater demands on availability and 24/7 services when dealing with errands that are regarded as low priority compared to regular police work, e.g. collecting tips from the public. One attempt to meet these increasing demands was the development of a mobile communications platform that allowed the public to communicate easily with the SPF using their own mobile phones by sending SMS and MMS. The focus of this paper is on the early phases of development of this m-service, in particular, on the specific technical issues such as interoperability and standards used by the actors on the scene affecting the development of mobile information systems. The learning experiences are as follows: First, mobile communication platforms have a large potential for contributing to the field of emergency management information systems since they can be based on open and nationally accepted standards. Second, global and national standards for sending multimedia messages are not always truly standardized. Operators and mobile phone manufacturers make minor alterations and interpretations of the standard and thereby some of the benefits found in standards disappear. Third, when developing mobile information systems we suggest and recommend that the analysis phase should be enhanced compared to traditional system development, and it should address the interoperability between mobile phones on one hand and operators on the other hand.

- A framework for the modelling of enterprise operations is presented, aiming at enabling a conception of enterprise operations in three explicitly aligned perspectives: its what, or morphology; its when, or temporal position; its where, or spatial position. It is derived from the precepts of a General Systems Theory and its General Process Theory. The practical and empirical benefit of this framework is indicated by a real-life case, a so-called 'Transatlantic Shopping Process', where the models constructed enable management of complexities emerging from enterprise operations.
