  • Cognitive Architectures Based on Natural Info-Computation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Studies in Applied Philosophy, Epistemology and Rational Ethics. - Cham : Springer. - 2192-6255 .- 2192-6263. ; , s. 3-13, s. 3-13
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • At the time when the first models of cognitive architectures have been proposed, some forty years ago, understanding of cognition, embodiment and evolution was substantially different from today’s. So was the state of the art of information physics, information chemistry, bioinformatics, neuroinformatics, computational neuroscience, complexity theory, self-organization, theory of evolution, as well as the basic concepts of information and computation. Novel developments support a constructive interdisciplinary framework for cognitive architectures based on natural morphological computing, where interactions between constituents at different levels of organization of matter-energy and their corresponding time-dependent dynamics, lead to complexification of agency and increased cognitive capacities of living organisms that unfold through evolution. Proposed info-computational framework for naturalizing cognition considers present updates (generalizations) of the concepts of information, computation, cognition, and evolution in order to attain an alignment with the current state of the art in corresponding research fields. Some important open questions are suggested for future research with implications for further development of cognitive and intelligent technologies.

  • Learning to Share: Engineering Adaptive Decision-Support for Online Social Networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2017 32ND IEEE/ACM INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AUTOMATED SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (ASE'17). - 1527-1366. - 9781538626849 ; , s. 280-285
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Some online social networks (OSNs) allow users to define friendship-groups as reusable shortcuts for sharing information with multiple contacts. Posting exclusively to a friendship-group gives some privacy control, while supporting communication with (and within) this group. However, recipients of such posts may want to reuse content for their own social advantage, and can bypass existing controls by copy-pasting into a new post; this cross-posting poses privacy risks. This paper presents a learning to share approach that enables the incorporation of more nuanced privacy controls into OSNs. Specifically, we propose a reusable, adaptive software architecture that uses rigorous runtime analysis to help OSN users to make informed decisions about suitable audiences for their posts. This is achieved by supporting dynamic formation of recipient-groups that benefit social interactions while reducing privacy risks. We exemplify the use of our approach in the context of Facebook.

  • AUTOMATON : A Gamification Machine Learning Project
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Encyclopedia of Data Science and Machine Learning. - : IGI Global. - 9781799892205 - 1799892204 - 9781799892212 ; , s. 3090-3101
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article displays a design ethnographic case study on an ongoing machine learning project at a Scandinavian gamification start-up company. From late 2020 until early 2021, the project produced a machine learning proof of concept, later implemented in the gamification start-up´s application programming interface to offer smart gamification. The initial results show promise in using prediction models to automate the cluster model selection affording more functional, autonomous, and scalable user segments that are faster to implement. The finding provides opportunities for gamification (e.g., in learning analytics and health informatics). An identified challenge was performance; the neural networks required hyperparameter fine-tuning, which is time-consuming and limits scalability. Interesting further investigations should consider the neural network fine-tuning process, but also attempt to verify the effectiveness of the cluster models selection compared with a control group.

  • Moving from Genetics to Systems Biology
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: History, Philosophy and Theory of the Life Sciences. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 2211-1948. ; , s. 125-134
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Access to competence in mathematical modelling may be a major hindrance for employing a systems biology approach in many research projects. Very commonly, the most successful systems biology studies are based on collaborations between experimentalists, contributing with the biological questions and experimental data and theoreticians, who contribute with skills in modelling, simulation and prediction. Collaboration across disciplines is not a trivial enterprise and very commonly requires skills to communicate across borders. This challenge, as well as the mere availability of matching theoreticians locally may prevent in many cases the integration of modelling and prediction into projects even if the interdisciplinary approaches offer great potential.

  • RESTful Service Architectures for Pervasive Networking Environments
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: REST. - New York, NY : Springer. - 9781441983022 ; , s. 401-422
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Computing facilities are an essential part of the fabric of our society, and an ever-increasing number of computing devices is deployed within the environment in which we live. The vision of pervasive computing is becoming real. To exploit the opportunities offered by pervasiveness, we need to revisit the classic software development methods to meet new requirements: (1) pervasive applications should be able to dynamically configure themselves, also benefiting from third-party functionalities discovered at run time and (2) pervasive applications should be aware of, and resilient to, environmental changes. In this chapter we focus on the software architecture, with the goal of facilitating both the development and the run-time adaptation of pervasive applications. More specifically we investigate the adoption of the REST architectural style to deal with pervasive environment issues. Indeed, we believe that, although REST has been introduced by observing and analyzing the structure of the Internet, its field of applicability is not restricted to it. The chapter also illustrates a proof-of-concept example, and then discusses the advantages of choosing REST over other styles in pervasive environments.

  • ubiSOAP : A Service Oriented Middleware for Seamless Networking
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Service-Oriented Computing “ ICSOC 2008. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer. - 9783540896470 ; , s. 195-209
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The computing and networking capacities of today’s wireless portable devices allow for pervasive services, which are seamlessly networked. Indeed, wireless handheld devices now embed the necessary resources to act as both service clients and providers. However, the seamless networking of services remains challenged by the inherent mobility and resource constraints of devices, which make services a priori highly volatile. This paper discusses the design, implementation and experimentation of the ubiSOAP service-oriented middleware, which leverages wireless networking capacities to effectively enable the seamless networking of services. ubiSOAP specifically defines a layered communication middleware that underlies standard SOAP-based middleware, hence supporting legacy services while exploiting nowadays pervasive connectivity.

    • Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are integrated physical, engineered, andsocial systems whose operations are monitored, coordinated, controlled, and integratedby a computing and communication core. Due to the dynamic structure ofCPSs, the security measurements are often complex. Given this fact, the objectiveof this chapter is to present the intrusion detection, prevention, and response system(IDPRS) for such a dynamic environment.

  • Information Fusion
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Data science in Practice. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319975566 - 9783319975559 ; , s. 61-78
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of information fusion comprises methods and techniques to automatically or semi-automatically combine information stemming from homogeneous or heterogeneous sources into a representation that supports a human user’s situation awareness for the purposes of decision making. Information fusion is not an end in itself but studies, adapts, applies and combines methods, techniques and algorithms provided by many other research areas, such as artificial intelligence, data mining, machine learning and optimization, in order to customize solutions for specific tasks. There are many different models for information fusion that describe the overall process as tasks building upon each other on different levels of abstraction. Information fusion includes the analysis of information, the inference of new information and the evaluation of uncertainty within the information. Hence, uncertainty management plays a vital role within the information fusion process. Uncertainty can be expressed by probability theory or, in the form of non-specificity and discord, by, for example, evidence theory.

  • Virtual Tourism in a Game Environment : Untangling Judged Affordances and Sense of Place
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: HCI in Games. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030501631 - 9783030501648 ; , s. 202-217
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study enriches and deepens understanding of the concepts of telepresence and sense of place, by examining their relevance to capture a place experience evoked in 3D environments through a research design that includes the affordance concept in virtual tourism. Many previous presence studies concern the in-the-moment experience without modeling the relationship with response variables that can help explain behavior in the digital or the material space. In this paper we tested affordance as the response variable in two different research models. The participants in our experiment explored the city of Los Angeles in a virtual environment (VE). Often, though not always, the participants had a feeling of “being there.” The results indicated that both concepts – telepresence and sense of place – can be used to measure the user experience in a VE. Telepresence appears to be a more reliable predictor than the alternative concept sense of place, but its meaning aspect is generally less well known, particularly with regard to a tourist’s intended activities and relevant affordances during a visit to a place.
