Late-glacial ice dynamics of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet in northern British Columbia and southern Yukon Territory : retreat pattern of the Liard Lobe reconstructed from the glacial landform record

- The Liard Lobe formed a part of the northeastern sector of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet and drained ice from accumulation areas in the Selwyn, Pelly, Cassiar and Skeena mountains. This study reconstructs the ice retreat pattern of the Liard Lobe during the last deglaciation from the glacial landform record that is comprised of glacial lineations and landforms of the meltwater system such as eskers, meltwater channels, perched deltas and outwash fans. The spatial distribution of these landforms defines the successive configurations of the ice sheet during the deglaciation. The Liard Lobe retreated to the west and southwest across the Hyland Highland from its local Last Glacial Maximum position in the southeastern Mackenzie Mountains where it coalesced with the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The retreat across the Liard Lowland and a subsequent splitting of the thus far uniform ice surface into several ice lobes is evidenced by large esker complexes that stretch across the Liard Lowland cutting across the contemporary drainage network. Ice margin positions from the late stage of deglaciation are reconstructed locally at the foot of the Cassiar Mountains and farther up-valley in an eastern facing valley of the Cassiar Mountains. The presented landform record indicates that the deglaciation of the Liard Lobe was accomplished mainly by active ice retreat and that ice stagnation did not play a significant role in the deglaciation of this region.

- Dokumentation av workshop gällande att diskutera begreppen ekosystemtjänster och geosystemtjänster Plats: Chalmersska huset i Göteborg, Kanalrummet. Datum och tid: 29 augusti, kl 11.30-15.30 Bakgrund: Utifrån pågående forskning på Chalmers om undermarken som en multifunktionell resurs ser vi ett behov av att kunna systematiskt beskriva alla typer av tjänster undermark som naturen tillhandahåller med syftet att kunna ta bättre och mer hållbara beslut angående hur dessa tjänster/resurser skall nyttjas. Flera av dessa tjänster är biotiska och klassas då som ekosystemtjänster (ES). Andra typer av tjänster såsom t.ex. geoenergi, utrymme, bärförmåga, arkeologiska och geologiska arkiv är inte biotiska och kan därför principiellt inte betecknas vara ES. Hur bör man då beskriva dessa på bästa sätt så att man kan få en helhetsbild över undermarkens tjänster? Vi ser att begreppet geosystemtjänster förmodligen kan fånga in detta och skulle kunna vara ett bra ramverk. Men är det bra eller mindre bra att introducera nya begrepp? Hur ser andra organisationer som arbetar med ES på att föra in ett nytt begrepp? Liknande frågeställningar uppstår när man t.ex. arbetar inom vattenförvaltning där flera av vattnets tjänster är abiotiska, där t.ex. begreppet grundvattentjänster används ibland och som innefattar både biotiska och abiotiska tjänster. Syfte: Att samla representanter från olika organisationer som arbetar med och berörs av arbetet med ES för att dela erfarenheter och kunskap omkring ES och vad som inte fångas in under begreppet ES, om detta är ett problem eller ej för de olika organisationerna, och hur man ser på att föra in nya begrepp och nyttan med det. Upplägg: Ett antal korta föredrag för att introducera alla till frågeställningen, hur de olika organisationerna arbetar med ekosystemtjänster (ES) idag och deras roller. Därefter diskussion utifrån ett antal frågeställningar. Inbjudningslista: Representanter ifrån Sveriges geologiska undersökning, Statens geotekniska institut, Boverket och Naturvårdsverket, forskare (Chalmers), kommuner (Malmö, Göteborg), HaV och Vattenmyndigheterna.

Last Interglacial (MIS 5e) sea level proxies in the glaciated Northern Hemisphere

- Because global sea level during the last interglacial (LIG; 130–115 ka) was higher than today, the LIG is a useful analogue for improving predictions of future sea level rise. Here, we synthesize sea level proxies for the LIG in the glaciated Northern Hemisphere for inclusion in the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines (WALIS) database. We describe 82 sites from Russia, northern Europe, Greenland and North America from a variety of settings, including boreholes, riverbank exposures and along coastal cliffs. Marine sediments at these sites were constrained to the LIG using a variety of radiometric methods (radiocarbon, U-Series dating, K-Ar dating), non-radiometric methods (amino acid dating, luminescence methods, and electron spin resonance, tephrochronology) as well as various stratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental approaches. As the areas in this database were covered by ice sheets from the penultimate glaciation and were affected by glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA), most of the proxies show that sea level was much higher than present during the LIG. Many of the sites show evidence of regression due sea level fall due to GIA uplift, and some also show fluctuations that may reflect regrowth of continental ice or increased influence of the global sea level signal. The role of microbes in decay and preservation: a Cambrian Explosion of animals and Lagerstätten.

- The abrupt appearance of animals in the early Cambrian has been interpreted either as an explosive biological diversification or, alternatively, as an artefact resulting from a sudden increase in the probability of animal remains becoming fossilised. We attempt to reconcile these competing interpretations in exceptionally-preserved biota, which provide a vital part of our knowledge of the disparity and diversity of the Cambrian fauna. We assess the factors influencing the potential for exceptional fossil preservation using the brine shrimp Artemia salina as our experimental model. Following gut wall rupture, but prior to cuticle failure, internal, gut-derived microbes spread into the body cavity and formed pseudomorphs of tissues. Gut-derived microbes were shown to be the main factor mediating both decay and biofilm replacement and tissue stabilisation. This pattern of preservation is consistent with results from other experimental studies and with the nature of Burgess Shale type fossil remains. Thus, the evolution of a through-gut may have not only underpinned the ecological revolution that bilaterian diversification represents, but also catalysed the exceptional preservation of early bilaterian fossils.
