  • Multidisciplinary Near-Surface Investigation of a Quick-Clay Landslide Prone Area in Southwest Sweden

    • Quick-clay landslides are considered one of the most important geohazards in Sweden, Norway, and Canada. The deposits involved are glacial and postglacial clays and silty clays, which are very sensitive to increased stress that may collapse their structure and cause liquefaction.A multidisciplinary approach was adopted in this study of quick clays in an area of southwest Sweden that is prone to landslides. It was mainly based on geophysical methods, but was complemented and validated with geotechnical, geological, and hydrological data. Downhole geophysics, land and river reflection seismics, radio magnetotellurics, P-wave refraction tomography, magnetics, and multichannel analysis of surface waves comprised the main geophysical methods used in this research. Laboratory measurements of core samples, such as grain size analysis, mineral magnetic properties, fossil content, X-ray fluorescence, cation exchange capacity, X-ray powder diffraction, electrical conductivity, and pH were also taken. Hydrological modelling was used to obtain information on the properties of groundwater within a coarse-grained layer, given the importance of this information in the formation of quick clays.The evaluation of the physico-chemical properties of the coarse-grained layer revealed high values of magnetic susceptibility, probably as a result of fluvial sorting, which tends to accumulate denser minerals such as magnetite. Potential quick clays were visually observed above this layer, and their presence was also confirmed by geotechnical data acquired in previous studies. Marine fossils identified within the coarse-grained layer confirmed the glaciomarine origin of the clays. Geophysical results revealed the presence of large-scale structures, an undulating fractured bedrock and a coarse-grained layer sandwiched between clay deposits, with leached sediments on top and unleached sediments below. This layer, important for the development of quick clays in the area, was 3D modelled in a regional context. Magnetic data also revealed that the coarse-grained layer together with quick clays, have the potential to act as a sliding prone layer. Multichannel analysis of surface waves helped to geotechnically characterize the area. Although the results could not reach the deeper layers, it did yield information about the shallower layers of clay, silt and sand. The VS30 values indicated the presence of soft soils, as well as soft clays/silts with high plasticity index and high water content.This PhD is expected to improve the current knowledge of quick-clay landslides and how they are preconditioned. Climate change will probably affect the study area in the near future, most likely increasing landslide risk, therefore, research should continue and advance to new levels. Application of other geophysical methods such as borehole or geophysical monitoring, and induced polarization, could provide more information about the formation of quick clays and associated landslides.

  • Late Holocene Paleomagnetic Secular Variation in the Chukchi Sea, Arctic Ocean

    • The geomagnetic field behavior in polar regions remains poorly understood and documented. Although a number of Late Holocene paleomagnetic secular variation (PSV) records exist from marginal settings of the Amerasian Basin in the Arctic Ocean, their age control often relies on a handful of radiocarbon dates to constrain ages over the past 4,200 years. Here we present well-dated Late Holocene PSV records from two sediment cores recovered from the Chukchi Sea, Arctic Ocean. The records are dated using 26 C-14 measurements, with local marine reservoir corrections calibrated using tephra layers from the 3.6 cal ka BP Aniakchak eruption in Northern Alaska. These C-14-based chronologies are extended into the post-bomb era using caesium-137 dating, and mercury isochrons. Paleomagnetic measurements and rock magnetic analyses reveal stable characteristic remanent magnetization directions, and a magnetic mineralogy dominated by low-coercivity minerals. The PSV records conform well to global spherical harmonic field model outputs. Centennial to millennial scale directional features are synchronous between the cores and other Western Arctic records from the area. Due to the robust chronology, these new high-resolution PSV records provide a valuable contribution to the characterization of geomagnetic field behavior in the Arctic over the past few thousand years, and can aid in developing age models for suitable sediments found in this region.

    • Multi-proxy analysis was performed on a radiocarbon-dated core, collected from a relic oxbow lake in theLimpopo River-plain, Mozambique, with the aim to reconstruct paleo-environment and past flooding of thelower river system over the past c. 800 years. An additional objective was to evaluate and investigate the potentialuse of different proxies as recorders of paleo-flooding events and paleo-environmental variability within thefloodplain. The proxies applied in this study were: mineral magnetic properties, grain-size distribution, organiccarbon content and diatom microfossil assemblages.We found that sediment grain-size and mineral magneticproperties of the minerogenic fraction were the most sensitive proxies in terms of detecting signals from highintensityriver-discharge events. In the 800 year long sequence, variations in sand content, magnetic susceptibilityand saturation isothermal remnant magnetization suggest at least four major flooding events at the siteduring the reconstructed period; in the mid-1200, late-1300, mid-1500 AD and during the last century. Thediatom proxy reflects the development of the site from an open oxbow lake to a mainly terrestrial area. Thediatom assemblage indicates that open lake conditions prevailed at the site between c. AD 1200–1400, withperiodic inundation by marine water, most likely due to late Holocene sea-level changes. From c. AD 1400 andonwards, diatoms were rarely deposited at the site, which indicates drier conditions. This was a result of soilformation and gradual in-filling of the lake, a processwhich possiblywas accentuated by a regionally dry climatesituation. Our study shows that oxbow lakes and the proxies used here have great potential for reconstructingflooding events, a knowledge that is crucial for potential prediction and mitigation of flooding events inMozambique in the future. Although chronological uncertainties limit comparisons to other paleoenvironmentalrecords, it seems that the flooding events recorded at our site occurred both during regionallywet and dry periods. Our data infer however, that flooding was probably more clearly recorded during thelake-stages than during infilled stage, probably as the terrestrial environment was more exposed to erosion.

  • Past environment and sediment dynamics in the Black Sea-Caspian Sea region from Southern Russian loess sequences

    • Loess deposits are excellent past climate and environment archives and contain records of aeolian mineral dust accumulation. Loess deposits stretch across Eurasia and sequences along the Lower Volga in the Northern Caspian lowland in the South East European Plain represent a key link between European and Asian loess. They were deposited during phases of Caspian Sea sea-level low stands in the Late Quaternary and are confined by deposits of marine sediments from transgressive phases. These sea-level fluctuations of the Caspian Sea and their driving factors are not well resolved, and one obstacle is the lack of palaeoclimate information during phases of sea-level low stands. In contrast to the marine sediments, the continental deposits are understudied and the origin and formation of the material is debated. As a consequence, loess along the Lower Volga is often left out from palaeoclimate reconstructions in the region. This thesis aims to resolve the origin, formation and post-depositional modification of this loess and determines its aeolian origin. Provenance analyses show that Lower Volga loess particles were formed due to glacial grinding and were transported over long distances via rivers prior to near-source aeolian deposition, where the loess experienced phases of pedogenic and cryogenic reworking. While no temporal changes in material supply can be identified for Lower Volga loess, a remarkable spatial variability is seen in dust sources over the wider East European Plain and in the South Caspian Sea region. This variability is linked to material input from multiple local sources, while the larger material supply to the region has broadly similar provenance and derives mainly from areas of continental and mountain glaciation, transported via rivers prior to aeolian deflation. This thesis explores the potential of Lower Volga loess for palaeoclimate reconstructions in Eurasia, and shows a generally cold and arid climate in the Northern Caspian lowland during the Late Quaternary Caspian Sea regression, with strong dusty winds, punctuated by slightly more humid and/or warmer periods. The thesis shows that enviromagnetic methods are suitable for palaeoclimate reconstructions from such cold climate loess, as long as several methods are applied in combination and interpreted appropriately. It also provides information about the magnetic fabric of Lower Volga loess. The findings of this thesis in broader implication show that the Caspian Sea level is only secondarily influenced by local-regional climate variation and that Quaternary Northern Hemisphere glaciation is the primary controller via river discharge to the Caspian Sea.

    • Abstract Due to a lack of marine macrofossils in many sediment cores from the estuarine Baltic Sea, researchers are often forced to carry out 14C determinations on bulk sediment samples. However, ambiguity surrounding the carbon source pathways that contribute to bulk sediment formation introduces a large uncertainty into 14C geochronologies based on such samples, and such uncertainty may not have been fully considered in previous Baltic Sea studies. We quantify this uncertainty by analyzing bulk sediment 14C determinations carried out on densely spaced intervals in independently dated late-Holocene sediment sequences from two central Baltic Sea cores. Our results show a difference of ~600?14C?yr in median bulk sediment reservoir age, or R(t)bulk, between the two core locations (~1200?14C?yr for one core, ~620?14C?yr for the other), indicating large spatial variation. Furthermore, we also find large downcore (i.e., temporal) R(t)bulk variation of at least ~200?14C?yr for both cores. We also find a difference of 585?14C?yr between two samples taken from the same core depth. We propose that studies using bulk sediment 14C dating in large brackish water bodies should take such spatiotemporal variation in R(t)bulk into account when assessing uncertainties, thus leading to a larger, but more accurate, calibrated age range.

    • A suite of analyses was performed on sediments accumulated during the last 10 700 years in Lake Spaime, a small, hydrologically open water body in the modern alpine tundra zone of the Scandes Mountains, west-central Sweden. The study aimed to evaluate (1) the nature of climate changes that forced the late-Holocene lowering of altitudinal tree limit in the region, the timing of which is known from prior studies based on radiocarbon dating of subfossil wood, and (2) the impact of these vegetational changes on an aquatic ecosystem. Arboreal pollen and plant macrofossil data confirm the persistence of trees in the lake catchment at least from c. 9700 cal. BP until c. 3700 cal. BP. Although growing-season temperature is commonly believed to be the dominant factor driving boreal forest tree-limit variations in the region, a chironomid-based reconstruction of mean July air temperature suggests that local deforestation during the late Holocene was not accompanied by a significant cooling. The tree-limit retreat was more likely caused by increasing effective moisture and declining length of the growing season. The ecohydrological response of Lake Spaime to this combination of climate and vegetational changes included a decline in primary productivity, as indicated by an abrupt decrease in sediment organic matter content, while associated increases in organic delta(13)C, delta(15)N and C/N point to diminished fluxes and altered balance of catchment-derived nutrients following deforestation. The decline in aquatic productivity is also marked by a distinct change in the mineral magnetic properties, from a high magnetic concentration assemblage dominated by fine-grained magnetite of biogenic origin to one dominated by background levels of coarse-grained detrital magnetite.

    • Magnetic susceptibility in sediments has been thoroughly studied as a paleoenvironmental proxy over the last decades. However, it is unknown to what extent magnetic susceptibility variation is also a diagnostic of different sediment sources. Here we investigate if multiple magnetic susceptibility-based parameters can effectively be used as sediment source indicators. New magnetic property data from the Mu Us and Tengger Deserts in China are compared to previously known sediment provenance based on other well-established proxies. To assess the magnetic properties of these deserts, magnetic susceptibility and its out-of-phase component, its dependence on frequency, temperature and low-field amplitude are analyzed. Our results indicate similar sources for the western Mu Us Desert and the Tengger Desert and a distinct source for the eastern Mu Us, in-line with previously hypothesized provenance patterns. However, magnetic properties within the Tengger Desert sediments are homogenous, which may suggest a uniform provenance for the entire Tengger Desert, that the sediments are greatly reworked, or similar magnetic properties in potential multiple source regions. Magnetite is the major magnetic mineral in the study area and the dominant causes for divergence in magnetic properties are the magnetic mineral concentration and domain state. The results here, in particular from the Mu Us, suggest considerable promise for using magnetic susceptibility parameters in desert sediment provenance research.

    • The Yermak Plateau is located north of Svalbard at the entrance to the Arctic Ocean, i.e. in an area highly sensitive to climate change. A multi proxy approach was carried out on Core PS92/039-2 to study glacial interglacial environmental changes at the northern Barents Sea margin during the last 160 ka. The main emphasis was on the reconstruction of sea ice cover, based on the sea ice proxy IP25 and the related phytoplankton - sea ice index PIP25. Sea ice was present most of the time but showed significant temporal variability decisively affected by movements of the Svalbard Barents Sea Ice Sheet. For the first time, we prove the occurrence of seasonal sea ice at the eastern Yermak Plateau during glacial intervals, probably steered by a major northward advance of the ice sheet and the formation of a coastal polynya in front of it. Maximum accumulation of terrigenous organic carbon, IP25 and the phytoplankton biomarkers (brassicasterol, dinosterol, HBI III) can be correlated to distinct deglaciation events. More severe, but variable sea ice cover prevailed at the Yermak Plateau during interglacials. The general proximity to the sea ice margin is further indicated by biomarker (GDGT) - based sea surface temperatures below 2.5 degrees C.

    • Accurate and precise chronologies are needed to evaluate the existence and effect of a post-depositional remanent magnetization lock-in process on sedimentary palaeomagnetic records. Here we present lock-in modelling results of two palaeomagnetic records from varved lake sediments (lakes Kalksjon and Gyltigesjon) in Sweden by using model predictions based on archaeomagnetic data. We used the C-14 wiggle-match dating technique to improve the precision of the Kalksjon varve chronology in the period between 3000 and 2000 cal BP, which is characterized by pronounced palaeomagnetic secular variation. This method allowed us to infer an age model with uncertainties of +/- 20 years (95.4% probability range). Furthermore, we compared the palaeomagnetic record of Kalksjon to Gyltigesjon, which has a corresponding 14C wiggle-matched chronology. The ages of palaeomagnetic features derived from the wiggle-matched varve chronologies are older than those predicted by the archaeomagnetic models. Lock-in modelling was performed with different filter functions to explain the temporal offset and the amplitude of the lake sediment palaeomagnetic data. The analyses suggest that a linear lock-in function with lock-in depths (the depth below which no more natural magnetic remanence is acquired) that range between 30 and 80 cm in Kalksjon and 50 and 160 cm in Gyltigesjon are most appropriate to explain the data. These relatively deep lock-in depths in sediments without a bioturbated 'mixed-zone' can be attributed to the relatively high organic contents and low density of the lake sediments, which contribute to a thick unconsolidated upper zone of the sediment sequence in which re-alignment of magnetic particles can take place.     • We present palaeomagnetic and cosmogenic radionuclide records of the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion in Lake Pupuke, a maar lake in Auckland, New Zealand. Laschamp was identified by a combination of relative palaeointensity, (10)Be and (14)C data from the lake sediments and represents the first such record from the Southern Hemisphere. Despite the high organic carbon content, which causes relatively weak natural remanent magnetisations, the geomagnetic intensity minimum associated with the Laschamp excursion is identifiable as a relative palaeointensity minimum that is synchronous with (i) a peak in (10)Be concentration and (ii) an anomaly in Delta(14)C. The Lake Pupuke time scale, provided by (14)C data calibrated with INTCAL09, places the (10)Be maximum at the same time as a (10)Be maximum in Greenland ice cores when secured to the GICC05 time scale. The central age of the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion in Lake Pupuke as defined by the (10)Be prediction peak is c. 41 kyr, which confirms its global application as a palaeomagnetic isochron. Anomalous palaeomagnetic directional data at c. 32 kyr in the Lake Pupuke sediments may represent the Mono Lake geomagnetic excursion, but tephra layers caused by frequent eruptions in the Auckland volcanic field during this excursion probably disrupted the palaeointensity signal. The study highlights the value of combining traditional palaeomagnetic methods with measurements of cosmogenic radionuclides in the quest for accurate and precise geochronologies during MIS3, a time of rapid global climate change.
