    • By dynamic forging during Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), grain-orientated ferroelectric Bi3.25La0.75Ti3O12 (BLT) ceramics were prepared. Their ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric properties are anisotropic. The textured ceramics parallel and perpendicular to the shear flow directions have similar thermal depoling behaviors. The d(33) piezoelectric coefficient of BLT ceramics gradually reduces up to 350 degrees C; it then drops rapidly. The broadness of the dielectric constant and loss peaks and the existence of d(33) above the permittivity peak, T-m, show that the BLT ceramic has relaxor-like behavior.

  • Grain growth by Ordered Coalescence of crystallites in Ceramics : Grain Growth Mechanisms, Microstructure Evolution and Sintering

    • Grain growth and densification process play the two most crucial roles on the microstructure evolution and the achieved performances during sintering of ceramics. In this thesis, the grain growth of SrTiO3, BaTiO3-SrTiO3 solid solutions and Si3N4 ceramics during spark plasma sintering (SPS) were investigated by electron microscopy.SrTiO3 ceramics starting from nanopowders were fabricated by SPS. A novel grain growth mechanism was discovered and named as ordered coalescence (OC) of nanocrystals. This mechanism involved nanocrystals as building blocks and is distinguished from atomic layer epitaxial growth (AEG) in classical sintering theory. The results also revealed that the dominant grain growth mechanism can be changed by varying heating rates. Low rate (10°C/min) gives AEG, whereas high rates (≥ 50°C/min) yields three-dimensional coalescence of nanocrystals, i.e. OC.BaTiO3-SrTiO3 sintered bodies were made by SPS of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanopowders mixtures. A novel Sr1-xBaxTiO3 “solid solution” with mosaic-like single crystal structure was manufactured by OC of the precursor crystallites. This reveals a new path for preparation of solid solution grains or composites.  Si3N4 ceramics were prepared from α- or β-Si3N4 nanopowders at the same SPS conditions. The anisotropic OC of precipitated β-Si3N4 crystallites gives elongated β-Si3N4 grains at 1650°C using α-Si3N4 nanopowder. In contrast, AEG leads to the equi-axed β-Si3N4 grains using β-Si3N4 nanopowder. The metastable α- to β-Si3N4 phase transformation and OC accelerates anisotropic grain growth.Grain motions contribute to the densification process during pressureless sintered 3Y-ZrO2 (>87%TD) or SPS of SrTiO3 (>92%TD) ceramics. This extends the sintering range for active grain re-arrangement over that predicted by classical theory.In this thesis a new grain growth mechanism (OC) is proved by using SPS and nanopowders. By OC the microstructural evolution can be manipulated.

  • Preparation of Transparent Nanoceramics by Suppressing Pore Coalescence

    • Microstructural developments in nanoceramics were investigated in 3Y-TZP compacts with relative density (RD) exceeding 93%. Special attentions were paid to the evolutions of pore structures. It was found that the densification process of nanoceramic compacts with apparently close porosity was greatly jeopardized by pore coalescence. This observation was interpreted by the coalescence of locally interconnected pores originated from inhomogeneous packing of particles. The pore coalescence can be suppressed by application of an external pressure. The processing principle was demonstrated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) with extended holding at a minimized sintering temperature. The highly dense 3Y-TZP nanoceramics containing no large pores became optically transparent.

    • Titanium received a macroporous titania surface layer by anodization, which contains open pores with average pore diameter around 5 gm. An additional mesoporous titania top layer following the contour of the macropores, of 100-200 nm thickness and with a pore diameter of 10 nm, was formed by using the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method with titanium (IV) tetraethoxide as the precursor. A coherent laminar titania surface layer was thus obtained, creating a hierarchical macro- and mesoporous surface that was characterized by high-resolution electron microscopy. The interfacial bonding between the surface layers and the titanium matrix was characterized by the scratch test that confirmed a stable and strong bonding of titania surface layers on titanium. The wettability to water and the effects on the osteosarcoma cell line (SaOS-2) proliferation and mineralization of the formed titania surface layers were studied systematically by cell culture and scanning electron microscopy. The results proved that the porous titania surface with hierarchical macro- and mesoporosities was hydrophilic that significantly promoted cell attachment and spreading. A synergistic role of the hierarchical macro- and mesoporosities was revealed in terms of enhancing cell adhesion, proliferation and mineralization, compared with the titania surface with solo scale topography.

  • Synthesis and Characterization of Nitrogen-rich Calcium α-Sialon Ceramics

    • In this thesis, a synthesis concept has been developed, which uses nitrogen-rich liquid phases for sintering of Ca-α-sialon ceramics. First, keeping the Si/Al ratios constant, the effects of N/O ratio on the properties and microstructure were investigated through a liquid phase sintering process. Second, nitrogen-rich Ca-α-sialon ceramics, with nominal compositions: CaxSi12-2xAl2xN16, x < 2.0, was synthesized and characterized. Third, mechanical and thermal properties of nitrogen-rich Ca-α-sialons were investigated in terms of high temperature deformation resistance,reaction mechanism, phase stability and oxidation resistance, and further correlated to their phase assemblage and microstructure observation.It has been found that increasing the N/O and Ca/Al ratio simultaneously in the materials could result in development of a microstructure with well shaped, high-aspect-ratio Ca-α-sialon grains, and an improvement in both toughness and hardness.For the nitrogen-rich Ca-α-sialon, mono-phasic α-sialon ceramics were obtained for 0.51 ≤ x ≤ 1.32. The obtained Ca-α-sialon ceramics with elongated-grain microstructures show a combination of high hardness and high fracture toughness. Compared with the oxygen-rich Ca-α-sialons, the nitrogen-rich Ca-α-sialons exhibited approximately 150 oC higher deformation onset temperatures and decent properties even after the deformation.The α-sialon phase was first observed at 1400 oC, however the phase pure Ca-α-sialon ceramics couldn’t be obtained until 1800 oC. The nitrogen-rich Ca-α-sialons were thermal stable, no phase transformation observed in the temperatures range1400-1600 oC. In general, mixed α/β-sialon showed better oxidation resistance than pure α-sialon in the low temperature range (1250-1325 oC), while α-sialons with compositions located at α/β-sialon border-line showed significant weight gains over the entire temperature range (1250-1400 oC).

    • NiO nanoparticles of 20 nm in diameter were spark plasma sintered between 400 °C and 600 °C for 5 and 10 min durations. Application of 100 MPa pressure from room temperature resulted in densities between 75% and 92%. The final grain size was between 26 nm and 68 nm. Lower densities were recorded when 100 MPa was applied at the SPS temperature. Two shrinkage rate maxima of 3.4 × 10−3 s−1 and 2 × 10−3 s−1 were observed around 390 ± 10 °C and at the SPS temperature. The two shrinkage rate maxima were related to densification by particle sliding followed by diffusional grain boundary sliding during the heating. The strong effects of the surface and interfacial processes which are active during the SPS were highlighted.

    • The densification behaviors of two silicon nitride nanopowder mixtures based respectively on a-Si3N4 and ß-Si3N4 as the major phase constituent were studied by spark plasma sintering. Sintering conditions were established where a low viscous liquid not in equilibrium with the main crystalline constituent(s) stimulated the grain sliding yet did not activate the reprecipitation mechanism that unavoidably yields grain growth. By this way of dynamic grain sliding full densification of silicon nitride nanoceramics was achieved with no noticeable involvement of a- to ß-Si3N4 phase transformation and grain growth. This processing principle opens the way toward flexible and precise tailoring of the microstructures and properties of Si3N4 ceramics. The obtained silicon nitride nanoceramics showed improved wear resistance, particularly under higher Hertzian stresses.

    • We investigate the local structures of oxynitride La–Si–(Al)–O–N glasses by 29Si and 27Al magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The glasses studied span an unprecedented range of compositions, up to >50 at.% lanthanum and nitrogen out of the cations and anions, respectively, and achievable through a recently introduced glass preparation route. Transmission as well as scanning electron microscopy verified homogeneous samples over length-scales down to 20 nm. As the nitrogen content of the glasses increased, 29Si NMR evidenced a progressive formation of Si–N bonds, with SiO2N2 tetrahedra dominating in the nitrogen-rich glass networks. In the oxygen-rich end of the series, aluminum is predominantly present in tetrahedral coordination as AlO4, whereas the glasses with highest nitrogen contents have a major fraction of AlO3N structural units. Trends in isotropic 29Si and 27Al chemical shifts and 27Al quadrupolar couplings are compared with results of La–Si–Al–O glasses and are discussed in relation to the glass compositions and their proposed structures.

    • CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics with a range of resistivities have been prepared using both conventional sintering and spark plasma sintering. For all cases, the high effective permittivity is associated primarily with an internal barrier layer capacitor mechanism. Additional polarization associated with the electrode-sample interface may appear but its visibility depends on the grain boundary resistivity (Rgb) of the ceramic. If the Rgb is large, the electrode polarization is obscured by sample-related effects; if the Rgb is small, a separate impedance associated with the electrode polarization may be seen. Discrepancies in the literature regarding the magnitude and origin of the high effective permittivity are attributed to a combination of differences in processing conditions, electrode contact material and measuring frequency range

    • Highly dense La2CuO4 ceramics have been prepared by the spark plasma sintering technique. Temperature dependence of electrical conductivity indicates that La2CuO4 ceramics sintered at over 875 degrees C exhibit a metal-like behavior, which should be ascribed to the special La2CuO4 crystal structure and its correlation splitting of the half-filled d(x2-y2) band. Our experimental data indicate that all of the La2CuO4 samples exhibit positive thermoelectric power in the whole measuring temperature range, indicating that the majority of charge carriers are holes. It is desirable to obtain good thermoelectric performance for this system by optimizing the electrical properties and reducing the thermal conductivity.
