  • A Taxonomy of Queer Game Design Experiences in MMOGames
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: What Happens When We Play. - Pittsburgh, PA : ETC Press. - 9781387441655 - 9781387434831 ; , s. 287-317
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many studies have been conducted on the experience of play in MMOgames to determine what makes them attractive to players. To deepenthis understanding and to suggest a potential longitudinal study, literaturehas been reviewed to determine key factors of what makesMMOs attractive to queer players. Social play, character creation, gameplay, jobs/classes, tasks, gestures, queer representation and thepossibilities of queer play as well aesthetic appearance was revealedto be important for queer players. These key factors were then appliedto Final Fantasy XIV to determine if it differs from or adheres to thestandard of MMO design.

  • Same-Sex Romances in Games
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: What Happens When We Play. - Pittsburgh, PA : ETC Press. - 9781387441655 - 9781387434831 ; , s. 411-427
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the author uses her personal experience of encounteringand engaging with same-sex romances in games as a way to discuss the positives and negatives of same-sex romances in games. Like all people, LGBTQ players look to role models in media for guidance and solidarity, and romantic relationships in video games can create particularly strong attachments for players to characters. Yet LGBTQ representations in games are rife with negative stereotypes or worse: complete exclusion. The paper argues for the potential power of games tohelp minorities explore their identities.

  • Father's Experiences of Shared Parental Leave in Sweden
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Recherches Sociologiques et Anthropologiques. - : Universite catholique de Lovain. - 1782-1592 .- 2033-7485. - 2930207310 ; 38:2, s. 9-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since the introduction of the Swedish parental leave reform in 1974, fathers have had the same rights to use parental leave as mothers. Between 2000 and 2003, a research project at the Department of Sociology, University of Gothenburg, focused on fathers who had taken more than four months of paid parental leave. The approach of the study was mainly qualitative, based upon a combination of a survey and interviews. A majority of the fathers who answered the questionnaire had been the main caregivers for their children during their parental leave. During the interviews many of the men described their mothers as role models for their fatherhood. The men also described their own partner as both anxious to get back to her work after her own parental leave period and convinced of the importance of a nurturing father. An early decision to take part of the parental leave probably made it easier for the men to reach workplace agreements. Most of the men described themselves as both nurturing fathers and as sharing housework equally. They stressed the importance of being alone with their child during a long period, to be able to develop a deep relationship with their child.

  • Gender, bargaining strategies and strikes in Sweden
  • 2019. - 1
  • Ingår i: Nordic equality at a crossroads. - : Routledge. - 9781138620032 - 9780815390732 - 9781351152327 ; , s. 47-68, s. 47-68
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter discusses the effects on women in Swedish working life. It explores the gendered patterns in bargaining strategies and the use of strikes. The chapter argues that gender differences in conflict patterns and bargaining strategies exist both among and within different industries. The collective agreement emerged in an unregulated field of law. Relations between the bargaining parties, as well as disputes over the content and application of collective agreements were solved via self-regulation. The rights of association and of negotiation are main components in the Swedish industrial relations system. The women’s organizations disappeared from the labour market in the heydays of the Swedish model and the solidaristic wage policy, but the different strategies between men and women remained. The new strategy is not only a result of a transformation of the collective bargaining system. The shift was also facilitated by some general changes in the labour market legislation.

  • Gender perspective on quality of life, comparisons between groups 4-5.5 years after unsuccessful or successful IVF treatment.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Acta obstetricia et gynecologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1600-0412 .- 0001-6349. ; 89:5, s. 683-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare quality of life in men and women who had in vitro fertilization (IVF) within the Swedish public health system 4-5.5 years previously, either unsuccessfully and were subsequently living without children, or successfully, having children aged 4-5.5 years. These groups were compared to a control group of men and women with children born at the same time as in the successful group. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Reproductive Unit, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Gothenburg, Sweden. SAMPLE: Twenty-six men and 37 women in the unsuccessful group, 135 men and 154 women in the successful group and 93 men and 118 women in the control group. METHODS: Questionnaire study. The respective gender differences were studied in the control and study groups. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Psychological general well-being (PGWB), sense of coherence (SOC), experience of infertility, demographic-socio-economic, and health characteristics. RESULTS: Men in the unsuccessful IVF group scored lower in total PGWB and SOC indices than the successful group men. They reported more depression, lower PGWB and lower SOC than the control group men. Women in the unsuccessful IVF group reported more anxiety, depression, and lower SOC than the successful group women and more depression and lower SOC indices than control group women. Men and women in the unsuccessful IVF group did not differ in any of the parameters. Men in the successful IVF group had higher PGWB, less signs of depression and more self-confidence than women in that group. CONCLUSION: Quality of life in men seems more negatively affected by involuntary infertility than reported in earlier studies.

  • Talking about sexuality : desire, virility, and intimacy in the context of prostate cancer associations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Men's Health. - : Sage Publications. - 1557-9883 .- 1557-9891. ; 7:1, s. 42-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prostate cancer and its outcomes are a real threat for health and well-being for men living in the Western world. The number of men with a diagnosis of prostate cancer, before the age of 65 years, has increased in recent decades. The aim of this study was to explore how some of these Swedish men experienced and talked about their sexuality. Four focus group discussions were performed in the context of associations for prostate cancer. Using qualitative content analysis, it was identified how the diagnosis was a threat to their male identity; the men's vulnerability as a group in society was made explicit. Their sexuality was diminished by their illness experiences. These experiences were difficult to share and talk about with others and therefore connected with silence and sorrow. As a result of this, the informants often played a passive role when or if they discussed issues related to sexuality with someone in the health care organizations. The possibility of voluntarily joining a cancer association was probably highly beneficial for these men. During the sessions, several men expressed the opinion that "it is always great to talk."

  • It’s a matter of eating or being eaten : gender positioning and difference making in the heavy metal subculture
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cultural Studies. - London, UK : Sage Publications. - 1367-5494 .- 1460-3551. ; 16, s. 453-467
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to study how gender difference and ultimately female gender positioning are created and manifested in the heavy metal culture. The empirical material consists of single interviews and focus group interviews with heavy metal fans between the ages of 18 and 26. The overall finding is that, while gender is a movable position in general, women move their gender position to a greater extent than men as they are constantly forced to adhere to the male values of the heavy metal culture. Three dualities in the positioning of heavy metal women illustrate to this phenomenon: a whore-goddess paradigm based on the knowledge of the female heavy metal fan; the balancing act of “acting male” and “looking female”; and the gender “twilight zone” of being insufficiently male for heavy metal culture while being insufficiently female for the mainstream world.
