  • Affective Historiography : Revisiting Injury, Rewriting Nation's History
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In 2012, Swedish public service television SVT aired the three-part drama series Don’t Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves (Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar) about the AIDS crisis in Stockholm in the 1980s. Based on a trilogy of novels, the TV series became a popular success: 1,2 million viewers were seated for the premiere, an intense media coverage followed and the series as well as the novelist and the scriptwriter, Jonas Gardell, received critical acclaim and awards. In this paper, Don’t Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves is discussed as an occasion of affective historiography: a coincidence of commemoration and activism in the present. In its turning to the 1980s, the TV series coincided with several US documentaries about AIDS activism  (United in Anger 2013, How to Survive a Plague 2012, Vito 2011, We Were Here 2010, Sex in as Epidemic 2010) and, also, a Swedish film Infected – The Story of HIV in Sweden  (2012, Smittad – När HIV kom till Sverige). Employing an archival aesthetic for documentary effect and interlacing fictitious scenes with documentary footage as well as an authorial voice-over, Don’t Ever Wipe Tears Without Gloves addresses its viewers through the twin modes of sentimentality and anger. While enabling gay community to mourn the victims of AIDS, to revisit the injuries of AIDS crisis, and to narrativize the gay life in 1980s Stockholm, the drama series also occasioned an expression of anger and a rewriting of nation’s history. By bringing the history of AIDS to mainstream media attention and through its archival aesthetics, the TV series flaunted an image of the nation’s near past of 1980s as homophobic and intolerant, intervening thus with the contemporary self-image of Sweden as LHBTQ-friendly. As such, the paper argues, the TV series redistributed the experience of vulnerability onto mainstream audiences, inviting both them and the gay community into complex politics of affect and history.

  • Authorial self-fashioning in Jörn Donner’s Portraits of Women
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Scandinavian Cinema. - : Intellect. - 2042-7891 .- 2042-7905. ; 5:2, s. 93-108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In his films of the late 1960s and the early 1970s, Jörn Donner, a Swedish-speaking Finnish author, critic and film director, employed his body and popular media image as a contemporary celebrity for narrative and marketing purposes. Focusing on the film Naisenkuvia/Portraits of Women (1970), a metanarrative about the alliance of art cinema and pornography in the 1960s and a parody of Donner’s public persona, this article investigates Donner’s ‘authoring practices’ and gestures of authorial ‘self-projection’ amidst the mediatized sexual revolution of the 1960s. Portraits of Women reveals Donner's appropriation and analysis of a newly sexualized public sphere, but the film also reads as a crisis point. While capitalizing on his public persona by casting himself as the male lead, Donner was forced to acknowledge that self-fashioning in the sphere of public sex escapes authorial control.

  • Confessions of a Free Woman: telling feminist stories in postfeminist media culture
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aesthetics & Culture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2000-4214. ; 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since its inception in late 1980s, the notion of postfeminism has been a highly contested term. While today circulating as an established description of ‘‘prime time feminism,’’ a highly visible media discourse of gender and sexuality that foregrounds individualism and consumerist tropes of choice and empowerment, its meanings for feminism as political agenda and cultural criticism nevertheless remain a point of disagreement. Is postfeminist discourse of gender and sexuality to be seen as a sign of second-wave feminism being partially incorporated into mainstream narratives? Or, rather, does it articulate a historical shift within feminist thought and cultural imaginary itself, or even a break-up with or a rejection of feminist historical legacy? In this article, these issues are investigated through a reading of a six-hour documentary Flying*Confessions of a Free Woman 1-6 (Jennifer Fox 2007, Easy Films, Denmark and Zohe Film Productions, USA) as a case of highbrow postfeminist television. Investigating how the documentary constructs an account of ‘‘the modern female life’’ in a global perspective, the article argues that Flying both articulates a sense of historicity and denies it. While never uttering the f-word, in its refiguring domestic ethnography as a mode of autobiographical self-interrogation, the documentary series evokes, albeit implicitly, a number of key tropes of 1960-1970s radical feminism: the notion of personal as political, the investment in consciousness-raising as a form of activism, the emphasis on shared experiences and emotions, and the idea of global sisterhood. As a consequence, it is argued, feminist critique is acknowledged and actualized only as an incitement to communication (sharing) and community-building in an affirmative sense. In this postfeminist story of feminism, hence, dissonant and critical voices are excluded as politics is reduced to an affect.
