  • Fleshing out the self : Reimagining intersexed and trans embodied lives through (auto)biographical accounts of the past
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores how current ways of imagining possibilities for intersexed and trans embodied lives within medical contexts might be informed by and reimagined through the historical lived experiences of intersexed and trans individuals as they have been articulated in autobiographical accounts.Postmodern, queer, intersex, and trans researchers and activists have criticised existing standards of intersex and trans healthcare for limiting the possibilities for diverse embodied lives by articulating certain forms of embodiment and selfhood as more likely to enable a liveable life than others. This has often been done in a medico-legal context by referring to experiences in the past of the unliveability of corporealities and gendersexed situations that differ from privileged positions. With a point of departure in these critiques, this thesis reopens questions about how intersexed and trans people may be embodied and have relations with others by reflecting upon the period of the first three-quarters of the 20th century, when the present standards of care and diagnostic categories were emerging, but had not yet become established.Drawing upon a unique set of historical source material from the archives of the Danish Ministry of Justice and the Medico-Legal Council, intersexed and trans persons’ life stories are rearticulated from their own and medico-legal experts’ accounts written in relation to applications for change of legal gendersex status and medical transition. In this way, the process is traced through which these life stories have been repeatedly rearticulated in order to become a usable basis for diagnosis and decision-making. At the same time, the stories are unfolded once more in a rearticulation focusing on their complexity and diversity.

  • ”Gå eller rulla – Alla vill knulla!” : Funktionsrättsaktivism i nyliberala landskap
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study follows groups in Sweden that are involved in a political struggle to change norms regarding sexuality and disability. The groups are mostly connected to the disability movement or the movement of sexual politics. The following questions have guided the research process: How do the groups describe their activities? What strategies do they use? What relations can be identified between them? What obstacles and possibilities do they meet? What space of action is created and maintained for the struggle, taking into account the political, cultural and economic context that they act within? In total, 43 interviews were conducted, predominantly with persons active in the struggle. Furthermore, the analysis is based on participation in the groups’ activities and archival studies of their publications, applications and reports to the funding agencies. The study concludes that an emphasis on knowledge and education always has been and continues to be the main focus for the groups’ political struggle. During the decade of 2010, this focus on education was related to norm criticism (normkritik), which enabled the activists to turn the focus from the deviant to the prescriptive normal. During the years of austerity within welfare services for disabled persons, the political struggle has shifted from a struggle mostly run for and by disability organisations to a situation where more able-bodied allies participate in the struggle, a development that is analysed with help of Crip Theory and the concept of “discursive climate of tolerance”. The analysis also shows how the fund-giving agencies and the projectification of civil society depoliticise, professionalise and dematerialise the political struggle. This dissertation’s main contribution is thus a case study of neoliberal co-optation, a process in which neoliberal hegemony incorporates and appropriates other discourses and practices. The dissertation argues for the need to crip neoliberal co-optation, i.e. to ask questions about what subjects that are interpellated and what space of action is thereby created.

  • Crip Theory : A Useful Tool for Social Analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 31:4, s. 395-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article gives an overview of Crip Theory, a diverse assembly of critical perspectives on dis/ability, and outlines how it can be used to analyse social relations and intersectionality in contemporary societies. Arguing that Crip Theory is indebted not only to cultural studies but also to materialist models of disability and feminist theory, the authors conclude that it can contribute significantly to gender studies in the Nordic region. Presenting central elements of Crip Theory—such as language, ableism, compulsory able-bodiedness, cripping and normativity—they argue that adapting Anglo-Saxon concepts to Nordic realities potentially adds new dimensions to intersectional and feminist analysis. The article concludes that Crip Theory can be useful in rejecting hierarchical language’s binarisms and claiming the right to name oneself, destabilizing ableist categories, cripping normativity, exposing ableism, and strengthening the political significance of social science research and activism. Finally, the authors indicate how Crip Theory can extend the scope of gender studies and feminist research to deepen the understanding of discursive climates of tolerance, to develop cripistemologies that may bring new perspectives to feminist standpoint theory, and to confront the ideological regressiveness and human costs of contemporary austerity politics and extreme-right movements.
