  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter is a collective autoethnography that reveals the messiness and fractured identities of (non)mothers and (non)researchers in and out of academic contexts. Luce Irigaray’s writing on breath, interiority and autonomy brings together the reflections. In Between East and West, Irigaray (2002) has learnt “the importance of breathing in order to survive, to cure certain ills, and to attain detachment and autonomy” (p. 10). She explores “a sexuation of breathing” as a woman “by practicing, by listening (to myself), by reading, by awakening myself” (2002, p. 10). Collectively, the stories in this chapter reveal living with and letting go of the demands of academia and the complexities of caring for selves and others.

  • Maintaining and challenging conservative teaching and learning culture in conservatories : The need for holistic pedagogy in educational fields of tension
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Research Studies in Music Education. - : Sage Publications. - 1321-103X .- 1834-5530.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When the need of transforming and remixing music education is illuminated, fields of tensions in relation to the traditional master–apprentice model of teaching often appear. Binaries have been constructed and critiqued in research to describe tensions at various music educational levels. Some studies have also asked for a holistic, “both/and” holding. In higher music education (HME), the need for new approaches in research to understand how teaching and learning is developing are asked for. As a contribution, the overall aim of the article is to illuminate to what extent traditional culture norms and structures are maintained and challenged at three European conservatories. The specific aim is to map possible fields of tension surrounding approaches to teaching and related learning. The analysis in this article partly builds on understandings of culture and institutions, and partly on theories of relational pedagogy. To get access to how leaders, teachers, and students experience participating in the teaching and learning of conservatory cultures, an interview study was planned. The transcriptions were treated by a thematic analysis model. The analysis explored three themes that represent fields of tension: teaching in relation to established cultural structures, to creating or not creating new learning trajectories, and collaboration or competition—the educational culture. The fields of tension found through the analysis concern relations between the traditional conserved conservatory teaching and new open and diverse thoughts about and actions within in HME teaching. It becomes obvious that creating new learning trajectories should be a common issue, involving students and teachers, as well as leaders of conservatories, and that competition should be supported by collaboration. A consequence of such a pedagogical approach would be that differences between programs for diverse instruments could be balanced, and that all involved could learn from each other, which demands flexibility between individual and collaborative learning activities.

  • Gender Studies Education and Pedagogy
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In 2012 and 2013, the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research publishes a five-part series on Swedish gender studies, in which Gender Studies Education and Pedagogy is the first part. The aim is to highlight and spread knowledge about gender studies to wider circles, both within and outside universities and other higher education institutions. The publication of this series is being led by editors Anna Lundberg (Linköping University) and Ann Werner (Södertörn University), and includes a reference group of representatives from gender studies disciplines in Sweden as well as the authors who have contributed to the publications. The themes for the four following publications are: What the future holds for students of gender studies – a national alumni survey; Gender studies, politics and social responsibility; Academic challenges in writing and thought; Theoretical/methodological contributions from gender studies. It is not yet decided whether the remaining parts will be translated to English. The publications have been selected based on consultations between the series editors, the Swedish Secretariat for Gender Research, the reference group and the authors. The reference group consists of: Ulrika Jansson (Karlstad University), Jenny Björklund (Uppsala University), Stina Backman (Linköping University), Hanna Hallgren (Södertörn University), Fanny Ambjörnsson (Stockholm University), Irina Schmitt (Lund University), Erika Alm (University of Gothenburg), Gunnel Karlsson (Örebro University), Kristin Järvstad (Malmö University) and Mia Liinason (Genusforskarförbundet).

  • Feministiska kulturstudier : En introduktion
  • 2023
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Articulations of Gender and Nation in Music Use in Stockholm and Moscow
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: [Conference] Music, Gender & Difference. - Wien. ; , s. 85-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has shown that uses of media technologies (Gray 1992, Lally 2002) as well as music consumption (DeNora 2000) are gendered practices, while scholars have also emphasized how national context and ideas about nation, ethnicity and race play into the uses of media technologies (Miller & Slater 2000) and music cultures (Roy 2010).  Drawing on such analyses, this paper investigates contemporary practices in music use from an intersectional feminist perspective. It takes as its starting point the Internet as a core music platform, which is transforming listening modes and potentially also meanings of music.Posing questions about how to understand emerging trends in music use in relation to music as a gendered and place-bound practice, the paper presents one part of a larger study of music use online among young adults in Stockholm and Moscow. The study is ongoing and is conducted by the presenters and their colleagues. Analyzing focus group interviews with young adult men and women, the paper explores how – primarily – gender and nation is articulated (Hall 1996) in the talk about music and online media technologies. Through discussions about their favorite music as well as their favorite media to use when listening to music, and how music is intricately intertwined in their social networks, the participants display ideas about themselves in a context of gender, place, ethnicity and race. We argue that the way they listen to music and use media technology such as Spotify and Last FM can be understood as interplaying with the process of articulation of gender and nation, and that this articulation may differ between different places.
