  • The impact of society on management control systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 33:4, s. 253-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to investigate whether certain configurations of management controls dominate in certain societies (socio-cultural contexts) and whether the effectiveness of a given archetype of management control systems (MCSs) varies depending on the socio-cultural setting the society in which it operates. The study focuses on three socio-cultural groups and the corresponding institutional contexts (an Anglo-Saxon group, a Central European group, and a Northern European group) and three MCS archetypes (delegated bureaucratic control, delegated output control, and programmable output control). We use unique data from a cross-national, interview-based survey encompassing 610 strategic business units from nine countries (seven European countries plus Canada and Australia). The idea that firms tend to adapt MCSs to the socio-cultural context does not gain empirical support in this study. No significant differences in the distribution of MCSs between the three socio-cultural groups are noted. However, we do find that programmable output control has a more positive impact on effectiveness in Anglo-Saxon cultures, while delegated output control has a more positive impact on effectiveness in Northern Europe. Taken together these findings indicate that distinct differences between societies make a particular MCS design more appropriate in a given society, but where such differences are not dramatic (as in the present case), multiple MCS designs can be found in the same society.

  • Why issue equity abroad? Corporate reasons and stock market responses
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Management International Review, July 1997. ; 37:3, s. 223-241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a world with imperfectly integrated national capital markets the cost of funds is, in general, different across markets. If individual countries, by mutual agreement, or forced by factors outside their control, embark on a process of deregulation and financial integration, the spread in the cost of funds across markets will narrow. Some types of impediments, such as explicit capital controls, will be easily removed, while others such as informational problems, may prove harder to overcome. Sweden provides an example where national capital markets were highly regulated between 1939 and the mid-seventies, then a process of gradual liberalization began. This process increased in intensity during the first part of 1980s and culminated in 1989 then the last remnants of the formal exchange controls were removed.

  • Demographic determinants of incident experience and risk perception : Do high-risk groups accurately perceive themselves as high-risk?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Risk Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1366-9877 .- 1466-4461. ; 1, s. 99-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes demographic determinants of incident experience and risk perception, as well as the relationship between the two, for eight different risk domains. Analyses were conducted by merging the results of a Swedish population-based survey, which includes approximately 15,000 individuals, with demographic and socio-economic register data. Being male was associated with higher incident experience yet a lower risk perception for nearly all risk domains. Lower socioeconomic status was associated with higher incident experience for falls, and being a victim of violence but lower incident experience for road traffic accidents. Lower socioeconomic status was also associated with higher risk perception for falls. On aggregate, ranking the different domains, respondents’ risk perception was in almost perfect correspondence to the ranking of actual incident experience, with the exception that the risk of being a victim of violence is ranked higher than indicated by actual incident experience. On a demographic group level, men and highly educated respondents perceive their risks to be lower than what is expected considering their actual incident experience.

  • How sustainable is the sharing economy? On the sustainability connotations of sharing economy platforms
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 206, s. 419-429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sharing economy has evolved and spread to various sectors of the economy. Its early idea linked to the creation of more sustainable uses of resources. Since then, the development of the sharing economy has included a professionalization with self-employed suppliers rather than peers, and the question is whether the platforms following this development maintain the focus on sustainability. This paper describes and classifies the sustainability connotation of sharing economy platforms. It analyses 121 platforms derived through social media analytics to figure out whether they describe themselves as sustainable. The findings suggest that the sustainability connotation closely connects to specific sectors such as fashion, on-demand services and logistics. Meanwhile, the dominant role model platforms do not communicate about being sustainable. These findings contribute to previous research through (1) giving a systematic empirical account on the way various sharing economy platforms describe themselves in terms of sustainability, (2) pointing out the differences among the platforms, and (3) indicating the diversity in sustainability connotation among various sectors of the economy.

  • Innovation and Creativity in Festival Organisations
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hospitality Marketing & Management. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1936-8623 .- 1936-8631. ; 20:3, s. 287-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study contributes to understanding processes of innovation and creativity in festival organizations. The focus is on the internal work of renewing the festival. Three case studies of Swedish festival organizations demonstrate how festival workers attempt to renew the festival product. Processes of renewal include various ways of encouraging new ideas and creative solutions, such as brainstorming, imitation of similar products, and influences from the external environment. Two main processes of renewal were identified: institutionalized and emergent. The study further elaborated on the emergent process of renewal, thus identifying incremental and improvised renewal. Different factors contributing to or hindering innovations were distinguished; the demands of potential visitors, the management's view on renewal, the team's view on renewal, the organizational culture, and change of managers and staff.

  • Joint event production in the jungle, the park, and the garden : Metaphors of event networks
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Tourism Management. - : Elsevier. - 0261-5177 .- 1879-3193. ; 30:3, s. 393-399
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues that actors in different event networks experience different dynamics in terms of the joint organising of the event. The Political Market Square (PSQ) model is used to describe, analyse and compare the interactions and dynamics going on in three event networks. The purpose is to categorise different kinds of PSQs in terms of actors' interactions and network dynamics, which, in turn, contributes to knowledge on how events are produced using a network perspective. An analysis of the different event networks resulted in three different categories of Political Market Squares - the jungle, the park, and the garden, representing a tumultuous, a dynamic, and an institutionalised event network. The institutionalised PSQ (the park) is often prescribed in literature on event organising. Therefore, more research focused on understanding tumultuous and dynamic event networks (the jungle and the park) are needed. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

  • A project as a workplace Observations from project managers in four R&D and project-intensive companies
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Project Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-7863 .- 1873-4634. ; 33:4, s. 828-838
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Projects and project management work present what would seem to be a paradox. Although business and industrial companies regard projects as strategic vehicles for innovation and growth, it is doubtful whether project managers are seen as a similarly strategic asset, due to their working environment. This article, which is based on interviews conducted at four major Scandinavian companies, describes several empirical cases of a project as a workplace. In line with previous research we observe a challenging and in many cases exposed situation for many project managers. Our main finding is that a considerable part of what makes up a non-sustainable project work environment stems from the imbalance of power that exists between permanent and temporary organisational forms. The article concludes that a process of "deprojectification" of project employees, i.e. making the distinction between line and project work less distinct in organisations may actually lead to more sustainable project work.

  • Organizing for digital servitization : A service ecosystem perspective
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 104, s. 450-460
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Harnessing digital technology is of increasing concern as product firms organize for service-led growth. Adopting a service ecosystem perspective, we analyze interfirm and intrafirm change processes taking place as firms pursue digital servitization. The study draws on in-depth interviews with 44 managers involved in organizing activities in two multinational industry leaders. Our findings identify major differences between the two focal firms in terms of digital service-led growth and associated ecosystem-related activities. The study disentangles underlying processes of organizational change in the ecosystem and suggests that within-firm centralization and integration play a key role in the capacity to organize for digital servitization. For managers, the findings highlight the need to foster service-centricity in order to take full advantage of digitalization beyond purely technological benefits.

  • Transformational shifts through digital servitization
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 89, s. 293-305
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturers increasingly look to digitalization to drive service growth. However, success is far from guaranteed, and many firms focus too much on technology. Adopting a discovery-oriented, theories-in-use approach, this study examines the strategic organizational shifts that underpin digital servitization. Notwithstanding strong managerial and academic interest, this link between digitalization and servitization is still under-investigated. Depth interviews with senior executives and managers from a global market leader revealed that to achieve digital service-led growth, a firm and its network need to make three interconnected shifts: (1) from planning to discovery, (2) from scarcity to abundance, and (3) from hierarchy to partnership. Organizational identity, dematerialization, and collaboration play a key role in this transformation. For managers, the study identifies a comprehensive set of strategic change initiatives needed to ensure successful digital servitization.
