  • A project as a workplace Observations from project managers in four R&D and project-intensive companies
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Project Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-7863 .- 1873-4634. ; 33:4, s. 828-838
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Projects and project management work present what would seem to be a paradox. Although business and industrial companies regard projects as strategic vehicles for innovation and growth, it is doubtful whether project managers are seen as a similarly strategic asset, due to their working environment. This article, which is based on interviews conducted at four major Scandinavian companies, describes several empirical cases of a project as a workplace. In line with previous research we observe a challenging and in many cases exposed situation for many project managers. Our main finding is that a considerable part of what makes up a non-sustainable project work environment stems from the imbalance of power that exists between permanent and temporary organisational forms. The article concludes that a process of "deprojectification" of project employees, i.e. making the distinction between line and project work less distinct in organisations may actually lead to more sustainable project work.

  • What is the right profile for getting a job? : A stated choice experiment of the recruitment process
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Empirical Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0377-7332 .- 1435-8921. ; 53:2, s. 803-826
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the recruitment behaviour of Swedish employers using data from a stated choice experiment. In the experiment, the employers are first asked to describe an employee who recently and voluntarily left the firm and then to choose between two hypothetical applicants to invite to a job interview or to hire as a replacement for their previous employee. The two applicants differ with respect to characteristics such as gender, age, education, work experience, ethnicity, religious beliefs, family situation, weight, and health, but otherwise have similar characteristics as the previous employee. Our results show that employers prefer not to recruit applicants who are old, non-European, Muslim, Jewish, obese, have several children, or have a history of sickness absence. We also calculate the reduction in wage costs needed to make employers indifferent between applicants with and without these characteristics, and find that wage costs would have to be reduced by up to 50 % for applicants with some characteristics.

  • Education and health: long-run effects of peers, tracking and years
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Economic Policy. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0266-4658 .- 1468-0327. ; 36:105, s. 3-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate two parallel school reforms in Sweden to assess the long-run health effects of education. One reform only increased years of schooling, while the other increased years of schooling but also removed tracking leading to a more mixed socioeconomic peer group. By differencing the effects of the parallel reforms we separate the effect of de-tracking and peers from that of more schooling. We find that the pure years of schooling reform reduced mortality and improved current health. Differencing the effects of the reforms shows significant differences in the estimated impacts, suggesting that de-tracking and subsequent peer effects resulted in worse health.

  • Modified Ridge Parameters for Seemingly Unrelated Regression Model
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0361-0926 .- 1532-415X. ; 41:9, s. 1675-1691
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we modify a number of new biased estimators of seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) parameters which are developed by Alkhamisi and Shukur (2008), AS, when the explanatory variables are affected by multicollinearity. Nine estimators of the ridge parameters have been modified and compared in terms of the trace mean squared error (TMSE) and proportion of replications (out of 1,000) for which the SUR version of the generalised least squares (PR) criterion. The results from this extended study are the also compared with those founded by AS. A simulation study has been conducted to compare the performance of the modified estimators of the ridge parameters. The results showed that under certain conditions the performance of the multivariate ridge regression estimators based on SUR ridge RMSmax is superior to other estimators in terms of TMSE and PR criterion. In large samples and when the collinearity between the explanatory variables is not high the unbiased SUR, estimator produces a smaller TMSEs.

  • Transfer of Academic Research - Uncovering the Grey Zone
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Technology Transfer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0892-9912 .- 1573-7047. ; 35:6, s. 617-636
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we respond to calls for further investigation on why and how scientists choose to commercialize their research. Mowery (University entrepreneurship and technology transfer: process design, and intellectual property, Elsevier, Oxford 2005), in his criticism of the US-system, emphasizes the need for multiple channels between university and industry. His argument makes the case of Sweden interesting, where the researchers own the intellectual property of their research. Sweden thus constitutes a unique case where data can be found on which choices researchers make in a setting where a variety of channels for transfer are available. Our empirical data, collected through case studies, allowed for the expansion of the typology for mechanisms for transfer of academic research as well as the development of a typology for determinants for researchers' choice to engage in transfer of research. Apart from those contributions to the theoretic discussion, the data also provided policy implications.

  • Interventions in Foster Family Care: A Systematic Review
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Research on social work practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1049-7315 .- 1552-7581. ; 30:1, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Foster family care is associated with adverse short- and long-term consequences for the child. A systematic review was conducted on interventions for foster children and foster careers. Method: A comprehensive search process was used to find eligible interventions evaluated in randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental studies. The quality of studies was assessed with GRADE, and effects were synthesized using meta-analytic methods. Results: In all, 28 publications of 18 interventions, including 5,357 children, were identified. Only three specific interventions had sufficient confidence of evidence. No study had examined tools for foster parent selection nor had evaluated preservice programs related to outcomes. Discussion: These analyses provide new insights and hope into the field of systematic interventions in foster care. The overall results indicate that it is possible to improve eight outcomes but cannot point out which programs are superior. Ethically, social care organizations should systematically collect knowledge about effects and side effects.

  • Locally based research and development units as knowledge brokers and change facilitators in health and social care of older people in Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Evidence & Policy. - : Policy Press. - 1744-2648 .- 1744-2656. ; 11:1, s. 57-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the role of locally based research and development units (R&Ds) focusing on health and social services. Nearly 300 Local R&Ds are funded by the Swedish government with the intention to facilitate knowledge transfer and development of high quality and effective health and social care organisations. Based on analyses of archival data on aims, activities and outputs of R&Ds focusing on care for older people the authors argue that Local R&Ds have potentials to act as knowledge brokers, change agents and researchers, but these overlapping roles need clarified strategies and enactment of a variety of skills.

  • Parental share in public and domestic spheres: a population study on gender equality, death, and sickness.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of epidemiology and community health. - : BMJ. - 0143-005X .- 1470-2738. ; 60:7, s. 616-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • STUDY OBJECTIVE: Examine the relation between aspects of gender equality and population health based on the premise that sex differences in health are mainly caused by the gender system. SETTING/ PARTICIPANTS: All Swedish couples (98 240 people) who had their first child together in 1978. DESIGN: The exposure of gender equality is shown by the parents' division of income and occupational position (public sphere), and parental leave and temporary child care (domestic sphere). People were classified by these indicators during 1978-1980 into different categories; those on an equal footing with their partner and those who were traditionally or untraditionally unequal. Health is measured by the outcomes of death during 1981-2001 and sickness absence during 1986-2000. Data are obtained by linking individual information from various national sources. The statistical method used is multiple logistic regressions with odds ratios as estimates of relative risks. MAIN RESULTS: From the public sphere is shown that traditionally unequal women have decreased health risks compared with equal women, while traditionally unequal men tend to have increased health risks compared with equal men. From the domestic sphere is indicated that both women and men run higher risks of death and sickness when being traditionally unequal compared with equal. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding the relation between gender equality and health, which was found to depend on sex, life sphere, and inequality type, seems to require a combination of the hypotheses of convergence, stress and expansion.

  • Paternity leave in Sweden: costs, savings and health gains.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Health policy (Amsterdam, Netherlands). - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-8510 .- 1872-6054. ; 82:1, s. 102-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The initial objective is to examine the relationship between paternity leave in 1978-1979 and male mortality during 1981-2001, and the second objective is to calculate the cost-effectiveness of the 1974 parental insurance reform in Sweden. METHODS: Based on a population of all Swedish couples who had their first child together in 1978 (45,801 males), the risk of death for men who took paternity leave, compared with men who did not, was estimated by odds ratios. The cost-effectiveness analysis considered costs for information, administration and production losses, minus savings due to decreased sickness leave and inpatient care, compared to health gains in life-years and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). RESULTS: It is demonstrated that fathers who took paternity leave have a statistically significant decreased death risk of 16%. Costs minus savings (discounted values) stretch from a net cost of EUR 19 million to a net saving of EUR 11 million, and the base case cost-effectiveness is EUR 8000 per QALY. CONCLUSIONS: The study indicates that that the right to paternity leave is a desirable reform based on commonly stated public health, economic, and feminist goals. The critical issue in future research should be to examine impact from health-related selection.

  • A collaborative research effort to bridge boundaries and support deviant youths in contemporary welfare systems.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: European Management Review. - : Wiley. - 1740-4754 .- 1740-4762. ; 2:1, s. 88-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper analyzes the challenges of introducing new approaches to the care of deviant youths in contemporary welfare systems. The specific study of early intervention programs within the area of psychosocial disturbances will be used to explore the interplay between emerging research results and the introduction of new approaches in different functionally specialized welfare carrying organizations. This paper is based on a collaborative research effort between researchers from education, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, economics and business administration and key actors from schools, police, criminal care, social security administrations, municipal health care and municipal politicians and administrative managers. The paper demonstrates that successful introduction of new coping strategies necessitates significant efforts to support the bridging of boundaries, the challenging of legacies and the learning from evidence to change established structures.
