  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Innovation for Sustainable Tourism. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781800372740 - 9781800372733 ; , s. 167-191
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined wineries' perceptions towards innovation within the context of sustainable winegrowing practices and wine tourism in New Zealand. In order to investigate the current situation in New Zealand, the National Wineries' Survey was extended to provide a longitudinal time series of data from the New Zealand wine industry. This data was also utilised to provide a comparison of the New Zealand perceptions of innovation with that of the Australian cool climate regions of Tasmania and Western Australia. The findings indicated that substantial concerns existed regarding the value of innovation within both wine tourism and sustainable winegrowing practices.

  • Crisis preparedness of hospitality managers : evidence from Malaysia
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Insights. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 2514-9792. ; 5:2, s. 292-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - Crisis planning and improvements to business resilience are increasingly significant aspects of hotel management. This study investigates the crisis preparation of hotel managers in Malaysia and how their perceptions affect crisis planning and preparation. Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative research method of semi-structured interviews with 24 hospitality managers in Malaysia was conducted. Data were analysed thematically using ATLAS.ti software, version 8. Findings - The findings showed that crisis preparation among Malaysian hospitality firms is relatively neglected. Hotel crisis preparation schemes are greatly influenced by senior managers' intentions and organizational culture. Organizational resilience also has a significant role in hotel crisis planning and preparedness. Interestingly, in terms of long-term adaptation, hotels were less inclined to be "learning organizations" and managers were reluctant to change their organizational established structures, core beliefs and practice sustained resiliency in crisis preparation. Practical implications - Understanding the crisis preparation of hospitality managers is important to develop effective strategies for different crises considering their severity and urgency. This study identified influential organizational and personal factors which affect crisis preparation of hospitality managers in Malaysia. The study further recommends a proactive mindset in crisis preparation of hotels. Originality/value - Crisis preparation of hospitality managers had received limited attention, and this study highlights how managers consider crisis planning and preparation.

  • Does storytelling affect destination image, destination personality, and tourists' behavioural intention?
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Anatolia. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1303-2917 .- 2156-6909. ; 35:2, s. 313-325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Storytelling can be an effective strategy in shaping destination image and personality. Nevertheless, little research has examined the effect of this construct on destination image, destination personality, tourist attitudes and their behavioural intention. Based on a survey of 146 international tourists, the current study examines these relationships within the context of Iran. The results showed that storytelling has positive impacts on destination image, destination personality, and tourists' behavioural intention. Storytelling also affects the destination image, destination personality and behavioural intention of men and women, and women reported higher scores than men. The findings provide significant insights into the potential role of storytelling as a destination marketing strategy, especially for destinations that may potentially previously been perceived negatively in some markets.

  • A cross-country comparison of accommodation manager perspectives on online review manipulation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1368-3500 .- 1747-7603. ; 22:14, s. 1744-1763
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accommodation businesses are increasingly dependent on a limited number of reservation platforms. A significant feature of these platforms is guest evaluations, which are transformed into ratings and rankings. As the positioning of the business in comparison to competitors determines customer demand, accommodation managers have considerable interest in maintaining or improving their online reputation. One response may be to engage in manipulation strategies. This paper presents the results of a survey including 270 hotel managers in five countries, Germany, Israel, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. Managers confirm growing competition as a result of ratings and rankings, and they report that guests are increasingly aware of the importance of reviews. To avert negative online feedback impacts, managers intervene strategically. The paper discusses new market pressures, emergent consumer judgement culture and consumer citizenship, opportunities for legal redress and the emerging importance of reputation management strategies.

  • Sharing versus collaborative economy : how to align ICT developments and the SDGs in tourism?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Tourism. - : Channel View Publications. - 0966-9582 .- 1747-7646. ; 27:1, s. 74-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Great hopes have been placed in the sharing economy to provide a new business model based on peer-to-peer (P2P) exchanges of underutilized assets. As a model, the sharing economy has been expected to make significant contributions to sustainability, providing new opportunities for entrepreneurship, more sustainable use of resources, and consumer co-operation in tight economic networks. However, in recent years, digital platforms have turned into the most important actors in the global sharing economy, turning global corporations, such as AirBnB, Booking, or TripAdvisor into intermediaries controlling and profiting from most transactions. Focused on accommodation, this paper conceptualizes the sharing economy in comparison to the wider collaborative economy, and discusses its social, economic, environmental, and political impacts in comparison to the sustainable development goals. It concludes that the sharing economy has great potential to make very significant contributions to sustainability, though the model is increasingly being replaced by the collaborative economy, which performs as an extension and acceleration of neoliberal economic practices.

  • Positionality, inter-subjectivity and reflexivity in Muslim minority research
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Market Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1470-7853. ; 65:6, s. 778-795
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Drawing substantially on epistemologies developed in the context of vulnerable populations and responding to calls for greater epistemic justice in marketing research, an intersectional framework involving positionality, partiality, reflexivity, and situated knowledges is proposed to reflect on undertaking market research with Muslim minority populations in non-Muslim majority countries. This population is often highly vulnerable due to stigmatisation, Islamophobia and processes of othering that affect Muslim consumer behaviour, practices and identity. The framework is derived from reflexive experiences of market research undertaken by the authors on and with Islamic consumers both on an individual and collective basis and from relevant literature. The framework highlights the relational nature of the research experience and the situatedness and positionality of both the researcher and researched. In the case of research with Muslim populations we also draw out the significance of religious identity, ideology and religiosity; intersectionalities, including gender; and religious and cultural power as framed by cultural and institutional practices and which affect notions of class and attitudes to the other. We propose an approach that helps overcome Muslim/non-Muslim binaries that flatten the lived notions of the Muslim experience and consumption practices and instead provide for a richer and more representative account of Muslim identity. However, this approach also heightens researcher sensitivity to the situatedness of Muslims within social norms and the implications that this has for anonymity.

  • Resilience in hospitality and tourism : issues, synthesis and agenda
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0959-6119 .- 1757-1049. ; 35:1, s. 347-368
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose This paper aims to identify research approaches and issues in relation to the main paradigms of resilience: engineering resilience, ecological resilience and socio-ecological resilience. This paper provides a synthesis of the core elements of each resilience approach and their implications. Design/methodology/approach A critical thematic review was undertaken of the hospitality and tourism resilience literature. Findings Resilience is a contested boundary object with different understandings according to conceptual and disciplinary position. The dominant approach in hospitality and tourism studies is primarily informed by engineering resilience with the focus at the organizational level. The ontological and epistemological understanding of resilience and change concepts appears limited leading to a lack of appreciation of the multi-scaled nature of resilience and the importance of slow change. Research/limitations/implications The research has important implications for understanding the key elements of different approaches to resilience. Practical implications The research synthesis may help improve resilience strategy and policymaking, including indicator selection. Social implications The research notes the relationship of resilience to sustainability, the potential for learning and decision-making practices. Originality/value In addition to thematic analysis, a model of the multi-scaled nature of resilience is provided and the key elements of the three main approaches with implications for theory and practice.

  • Tourism and innovation
  • 2019
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This ground-breaking volume on the relationships between tourism and innovation provides an overview of relevant innovation theories and related literatures on entrepreneurship, productivity, regional development and competitiveness, and their significance to contemporary tourism practices.Innovation is a key concept in business and entrepreneurial studies and the broader social sciences. Yet, despite its policy and academic importance, historically little attention has been given to the role of innovation in tourism and the corresponding contribution of tourism-related human mobility to regional, firm, and product innovation. This book emphasises that innovation in tourism is much more than a series of technological innovations, as important as they are, and instead needs to be understood in an economic, social, and political context, with particular stress being placed on the extent to which innovations are shaped by the framework of governance and regulation, as well as by institutional factors and activities of individual actors and entrepreneurs. It is structured so as to introduce the reader to the overall significance of innovation at various levels and the role that innovation plays in firm and place competition. Supported with case studies throughout, this book is essential reading for all tourism students.

  • Locality in the Promoted Sustainability Practices of Michelin-Starred Restaurants
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 15:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable practices are increasingly promoted in the restaurant industry. One significant aspect of sustainability in restaurants is the use of local supply chains, especially for food, which also serve as a means for restaurants to promote freshness of produce, sourcing, and quality. Considering the prevalence of locality in menu marketing, this study aims to explore the relationships between sustainability and locality at fine-dining restaurants. Michelin-starred restaurants are significant influencers in the restaurant industry, as well as food fashions overall, and may therefore serve to promote sustainability practices. This study examines the sustainability of 135 Michelin three-star restaurants by conducting website content analysis. By identifying restaurants' sustainable practices during the processes of procurement, preparation, and presentation and analysing the official websites of 135 Michelin three-star restaurants, this study finds that although all sustainable practices are mentioned by less than half of the reviewed websites, most practices could be interpreted as being embedded in their locality, especially local food and restaurant history. This study suggests that promoting locality could therefore help sustain sustainability in the fine-dining restaurant industry. Although this study is limited to the website content of official websites for Michelin three-star restaurants, it provides potentially valuable insights on the promotion of sustainable restaurant practices.
