  • Time for multiplay? An analysis of bundling services in the Swedish telecommunications markets
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 10th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet Techno-Economics, CTTE 2011.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper provides an analysis explaining the factors that determine the consumer's decision on bundling service in the Swedish telecommunications market. A multinomial model is employed to examine empirically whether the discount, service provider and socio-economic factors can explain the consumer's decision. The data from a national survey in 2009 commissioned by Post- och Telestyrelsen (PTS), the Swedish telecommunications regulator, are used for the analysis. Based on the findings, the discount, service provider and level of income have a potential impact on the decision to buy bundling services. Every service provider has a different strength in bundling services that depends on its core business. Telia would be better off offering triple-play while others may need to focus on doubleplay.

  • From policy to misery? The State Agricultural Farms vs. 'the rural'
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Quaestiones Geographicae. - : Adam Mickiewicz University Poznan. - 2082-2103 .- 2081-6383 .- 0137-477X. ; 38:4, s. 77-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1989 was a turning point within the socio-economic development in the former Eastern bloc, initiating a system transformation that affected the society at large. It also contributed to the crystallisation of certain cultural landscapes, hitherto largely illegible due to the inhibition of spatial processes encountered during Communism. In Poland, after a quarter-century of free market economy, the focus on social problems began to expand to the spatial realm as well. It became apparent that the progressive social polarisation that followed was most prominent in environments striated by a particular landscape type – the former State Agricultural Farm (PGR). Considering PGRs “the epitome of rurality” subject to ideas informing the direction of contemporary “rural development” prompts a different way of looking at the problem. In this paper, we investigate the concept of rurality in the discursive tenor of implemented policy and contrast it with contextualised empirical examples. Our findings suggest that efficient policy should be confronted with the expectations of residents at the local level, while introducing top-down actions usually ends in failure as in the case of post-PGR estates.

  • Policy mixes and policy feedback: Implications for green industrial growth in the Swedish biofuels industry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Renewable & sustainable energy reviews. - : Elsevier. - 1364-0321 .- 1879-0690. ; 173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, innovation systems scholars have advanced the understanding of the evolution of industries around renewable energy technologies as well as the role of policy feedback (and indeed politics) surrounding the development of domestic green industrial development policies. To take a step towards combining these literature streams, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of policy mixes and policy feedback in the emergence of domestic green industries. This is achieved in the empirical case of biofuels in Sweden, and the findings show that policy feedback dynamics created difficulties in aligning the national policy mix with the technology and industrial developments in the country. The resulting political uncertainty predominantly hampered the scaling up of domestic production capacity, while R&D and import of biofuels instead could grow strong. Based on this empirical case, a process model is developed to explain the role of policy feedback in the development of domestic industries, thus demonstrating how the growth of domestic industries is driven by the interplay of policy effects and various feedback processes. The findings suggest that future research into the role of policies in “green” domestic industry growth should devote more attention to the dynamics driving the co-evolution of policy, technology and industry structures.

  • Economic Management of Future Nuclear Accidents
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Technological and Economic Future of Nuclear Power. - Wiesbaden : Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden. - 9783658259860 ; , s. 211-220
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Nuclear core melts with large emissions of radioactive substances are not paid for by nuclear power companies but by the victims and by taxpayers. This subsidy is often the result of legislation with that purpose. Experience shows that the relative frequency of such accidents is several orders of magnitude larger that the risk estimates publicised by the nuclear industry and nuclear proponents. This chapter describes the how the problem was created in order to make the nuclear development economically possible. In the end, it is described how amarket may be created based on compulsory paying capacity, possibly provided via catastrophe bonds that would internalise many costs of accidents. At the same time, such regulations would provide a market evaluation, by responsible actors, of the nuclear risk costs.

  • Kryptovalutor – energiförbrukning och miljöeffekter
  • 2023

  • Skill-biased acquisitions? Human capital and employee mobility in small technology firms
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1573-0913 .- 0921-898X. ; 60:3, s. 1219-1247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between acquisitions and mobility of knowledge workers and managers in small technology companies and how individual skills and capabilities moderate this relationship. Relying on the matched employer–employee data of the Swedish high-tech sectors from 2007 to 2015, we find that acquisitions increase the likelihood of employee departures, mainly in the form of switching to another employer, but that these acquisition effects are weaker for employees with technological competences. By contrast, the acquisition effects are found to be weaker for employees with managerial competences only when acquirers have a strong employee retention motive. When acquirers do not have a strong retention motive, managers, compared to other employees, are more likely to exit the (national) labor market after acquisitions. Our results suggest that the retention motive is a critical condition to explain post-acquisition employee turnover. Both technological and managerial competences are the types of human capital valued by acquirers when they have a strong retention motive.

  • AEOLIX Living Labs Operational ImpactsAssessment
  • 2019
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This document provides the AEOLIX impact assessment of living labs at the operational level. It is based on three main impacts namely business, environment, and socio-economic impacts. The three impacts are sub-divided further into sub-categories. The report collects data from twelve living labs involved in with AEOLIX. One of the main goals of AEOLIX was to reduce the costs for various logistics activities as implemented in twelve living labs. The expected benefits in the business area are from reducing the consumption of different resources, reducing the time used for various activities, and from increasing the productivity in certain areas. The economic or business benefits came along two dimensions: (i) in terms of time and (ii) in terms of money. In terms of time, AEOLIX facilitated reducing the time spent on various activities at the companies. In terms of money, AEOLIX helped to save the costs of specific logistics activities within the living lab. For the environmental aspect an overall value of 20% was set as target value for reduction in CO2 emission using AEOLIX. Only one of all living labs reached this target value, but there was anyhow a reduction found in all living labs. AEOLIX and its functions have also helped in reducing noise pollution at some of the living labs. In some cases, there was quite a considerable reduction. For the socio-economic aspects the job creation, SME empowerment, and the improved quality of life are addressed. This study has explored the impact of AEOLIX on job creation in terms of drivers’ and operators’ jobs. Since the AEOLIX implementation is still in its initial phases, respondents were unable to estimate how many jobs (drivers and/or operators) were created in the long run. SME Empowerment was measured as the increase in SMEs’ market share and the increase in direct collaboration between SMEs and large organizations. The results were meager both with regard to the market share and the extent of collaboration. The improved quality of life is measured in the way AEOLIX puts more focus on work, the less stress at work and a positive attitude towards people using it. The results reflect that AEOLIX has greatly helped employees to put more focus on work and to reduce stress levels. Managers consider this as a positive side of the return on investment (ROI) as the business processes are improved. AEOLIX impact on various socio-economic aspects is in principle positive but as this process is very slow to emerge it takes time to observe any changes in social aspects. Acceptance and trust on AEOLIX can be captured as a majority of the evaluation managers of the living labs found the AEOLIX functions (dashboard, connectivity engine and toolkit) useful to a great extent. The willingness to continue using AEOLIX functions and their usefulness are directly related to each other. This means that the more useful a function is, the more users are willing to continue using it. The AEOLIX platform, through various services and functions, has a positive impact on society in general and on workers in particular. Although this impact cannot be evaluated financially for the first year of the AEOLIX implementation, numerous studies show that a more satisfying and less stressful job, together with a more welcoming and stimulating environment, have an important economic impact in the long-term period. Therefore, the fact that AEOLIX has a positive impact on society will also prove to be an economic benefit for the different companies.
