  • Theoretical and empirical accounts of Swedish financial supervision in the twentieth century
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The thesis is concerned with the history of financial supervision in Sweden during the twentieth century up to the financial crisis in the early 1990s. To this end a theoretical framework is developed which is based on institutional economics, law and economics, theories on bureaucracies, regulatory enforcement and policy analysis. Except for the attempt to propose how financial supervision and supervisors could be understood theoretically, the thesis address problems ranging from the organization of supervision in relation to regulation and the changes of the regulated market, the constraints and abilities put on supervisors in different institutional arrangements and regulatory regimes, and the competence of supervisors. The extensive use of empirical data aims to make the thesis a contribution also to financial history research in general, and the growing research on the histories of financial supervision in particular.

  • United We Stand, Divided We Fall. : Historical Trajectory of Strategic Renewal Activities at Scandinavian Airlines System, 1946-2012.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Business History. - Oxon, United Kingdom : Routledge. - 0007-6791 .- 1743-7938. ; 59:4, s. 572-606
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the second half of the twentieth century saw the rise and fall of ‘multi-flag companies’ (MFCs) in the civil aviation industry, our understanding of how some managed to buck the trend and achieve longevity remains limited. This article advances business history and strategic management research by examining the strategic renewal activities of Scandinavian Airlines (formerly Scandinavian Airlines System [SAS]) during the period 1946–2012. The study sheds light on the key roles of private and state owners, rivals as well as banks, in critical financial phases are discussed in terms of longevity in the company. The longevity of the business stems from the leaders’ ability to develop as anticipated and respond to change in their competitive arena in close interaction with the owners. Thus, incumbent firms that strategically renew themselves prior to or during market reform, such as deregulation, enhance their chances of developing the size of their networks and revenue streams. Our main contribution to business history and strategic management literatures is the development of context-specific stages, which shed light on the evolution of strategic renewal activities and shifts from older processes and routines towards customer service and efficiency.

  • Ingår i: Familjeföretagande. - Stockholm : SNS förlag. - 9789186949198 ; , s. 90-124
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The Economic Rationale for Business Groups : A comparative study of China, Japan and Sweden
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Business groups around the world are remarkable phenomena, and many academic scholars have studied their pros and cons. However, few researchershave analyzedthe economic rationale for the existence of business groups in a systematic way. Furthermore, even fewer scholars have targeteddifferent economic rationale for business groups situated in different institutional and cultural backgrounds. Focusing on business groups from China, Japan and Sweden, this paper is trying to compare different economic rationale for having business groups in three distinctive types of economies: China represents the developing economiesemerging from the late 1980s; Japan represents the developed economiesthat industrialized after World WarII;Sweden represents the developed countrieswith a longhistory of capitalist economic system. We first propose three assumptions to explain the existence of business groups, based on both the related literature and our observation. Then, they are separately analyzed with evidence from selected business groupsin the three countries. Our results show that the economic rationale for business groups in the three countries differs from each other. As for China, due to the active role of government in establishing business groups, business groups are a tool in the hands of the government to help the government to regulate the economy. Business groups in Japan mainly serve to reap economies of scope, while forming close relationshipswith the government to help revitalize the economy in critical times. Swedish business groups also diversify their industry portfolio to gain from economies of scope and at the same time seek cost-effective financing. The differences described above highly reflect the different institutional and cultural backgroundsin the countries respectively. The results might help academic scholars, business managers and government officials to better understand why business groups differ in various countries, and the role they are playing to overcome different social and economic problems.

  • The emergence and organizational persistence of business groups in China, Japan, and Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Industrial and Corporate Change. - : OXFORD UNIV PRESS. - 0960-6491 .- 1464-3650. ; 25:6, s. 885-902
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The existence of business groups has to be discussed in a systematic and comparative way. This article analyzes business groups in three countries, China, Japan, and Sweden, by providing a view as to why and how business groups solve economic problems, and how the specific national context of the group affects its substance and performance. Our first observation is that the business groups studied emerged at times of institutional instability and persisted, thanks to cooperative capitalism and an export-oriented economy. Second, our business groups have used a diversification strategy at the group level in order to share risks and reduce costs at the firm level. Third, business groups seemed to reduce problems associated with high management costs and risk when many industries were held together in a single, large enterprise. With regard to internal markets, there seemed to be national differences in intra-firm behavior and the ways in which national governments mobilized business groups to reach certain economic and social goals. The emergence and persistence of successful business groups indicate that the Anglo-Saxon model of the firm is neither the only one, nor superior.

  • A Note on Employment and GDP in Family-Owned Business : A Descriptive Analysis
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Family Business Review. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0894-4865 .- 1741-6248. ; 24:4, s. 362-371
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish government gathers information that helps identify family-owned businesses and enabled the authors to analyze every business in the economy over a longer period than has heretofore been reported. Using these data, the authors found that family-owned businesses account for up to one fourth of total employment and one fifth of gross domestic product in Sweden. These shares have increased over time due, in part, to economic policy. The authors compare their findings with other studies and suggest how Sweden and other governments might make family firm data more readily available for researchers.

  • Breaking the Industrial logic : A Comparative Study of Family Dynasties
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The article treats the context and inner life large family firms. The dominant question posed is what characterizes the largest Swedish family firms, some of which fully meet the definition of family dynasties while others only partially do so. The goal is to create a deeper understanding of the owners‟ motives and behavior without, however, determining whether or not it is an effective form of ownership. The empirical comparison, based on a set of new concepts, includes problems associated with generational transfers and evolving public economic policy. One finding is that the first generations of the dynasties broke with the accepted institutional rules and industrial logic of the time. In opposition to, or in cooperation with, the controlling authorities, they changed market conditions, thereby creating opportunity space that allowed them to become established and to grow. In order to achieve these changes in market conditions, they had to function as lobbyists or created strong relationships with those possessing political power. Through their enterprises, they created new markets. Once the firms became large employers, and thus important for the country‟s labor market, they also attracted the attention of politicians. Another finding is the preaching of value creating philosophies ? hobbyhorses with strategic content that disciplines and guides the employees of the dynasty and the ownership sphere‟s companies.
