A NEAT Solution : Where Interaction Design and Public Health Meet

- Office workers tend not to move about during work hours. A series of medical observational studieshave shown that extended sitting is associated with several negative health outcomes includingobesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), breast and colon cancer and prematuremortality. Therefore, developing ways to encourage physical activity and breaking the habit ofprolonged sitting in offices is urgently needed. Few studies, however, have investigated the natureof local movement and mobility in workspaces in depth and taking a cross disciplinary approach.This paper reports on an ongoing cross-disciplinary research project targeted at increasing physicalactivity of office workers while reducing prolonged sitting. Our collaboration between thedepartments of Informatics, Public Health and Clinical Medicine and the Design School at UmeåUniversity resulted in two ethnographic studies. This led to the development and implementation oftwo prototypes referred to as the “NEAT Lamp” and the “Talking Tree”. The “NEAT Lamp” is asimple sensor-based lamp that was evaluated in situ in our second ethnographic study. The resultsof this study deepened our understanding of local movement and mobility in offices and resulted inthe design of a second prototype, the “Talking Tree”. Using the knowledge gained through ourethnographic studies and the experience of using the prototypes, we were able to develop aconceptual framework for describing the patterns of local movement and mobility of office workers.This paper describes the process leading to the development of this framework. Moreover, ithighlights how this process benefited from the cross-disciplinary nature of the project.

- By taking departure in the concept of computer gaming literacy, which is described as the ability of interacting with a computer game, the report relates this to what gamers actually do in an empirically study of players. Earlier research claim that computer gaming could be seen as a semiotic domain. This study focus on the “character” of any ability that the concept computer gaming literacy could include, and answering the question what it means to be “literate” within this area. In particular what is it that a gamer can? The study’s empirical material is based on 20 gamers playing the Xbox game Timesplitters 2 by videotaping them when playing the game in pairs (split-screen). The players in the study, with an age between 17 and 54, have a broad variation in gaming experience. By doing interaction analysis, which has a background from socio cultural theory, the result illustrate that gaming is a discursive practice with a specialized language. Therefore, the gamer assumes learning a discourse in the game activity. Further, the gaming activities demonstrate that competence could be seen as two, to some extent, separate capabilities. One of them deals with handling the control, and therefore the games interface, by making it invisible to be able to interpret the artifacts “statements”. The second capability or competence is about seeing the game environments structure. The study shows that the gamer must make competent hypothesis concerning the model underlying the functions of the game to be able to progress in the game environment. Experienced gamers have therefore developed a way of seeing based on the structure of the game environment.

Circulation in the manosphere: Mobile matrices of reactionary masculinity

- Understanding how extremist ideas spread in stylized and enregistered forms is a matter of some urgency for feminist and critical scholarship, and this paper investigates the global spread of anti-feminist and right-wing discourses in the constellation of websites, blogs, and social media profiles collectively referred to as the “manosphere”, constructing and promoting reactionary and antifeminist masculinities. In the first section of the paper, I discuss theories of circulation, and present H. Samy Alim’s (2009) notion of the “translocal style community” as a suitable model for discursive formations that are dispersed, multimodal, networked, and in competition with each other. I then lay out the current state of research on the manosphere, and identify a need for a sociolinguistic approach to this phenomenon. In analysis of five Twitter accounts that promote NoFap I identify five distinct styles which work to present high-status masculine subject positions. In the concluding section I argue that register and style are intimately involved in the circulation of far-right and masculinist discourses, which undergird recruitment and radicalization strategies that appeal to anxieties about status and group belonging.
