  • Reinforcing spirals at work? Mutual influences between selective news exposure and ideological leaning
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 34:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of partisan news sources has raised concerns that people will increasingly select attitude-consistent information, which might lead to increasing political polarization. Thus far, there is limited research on the long-term mutual influences between selective exposure and political attitudes. To remedy this, this study investigates the reciprocal influences between selective exposure and political attitudes over several years, using a three-wave panel survey conducted in Sweden during 2014–2016. More specifically, we analyse how ideological selective exposure to both traditional and online news media influences citizens’ ideological leaning. Findings suggest that (1) people seek-out ideologically consistent print news and online news and (2) such attitude-consistent news exposure reinforces citizens’ ideological leaning over time. In practice, however, such reinforcement effects are hampered by (3) relatively low overall ideological selective exposure and a (4) significant degree of cross-cutting news exposure online. These findings are discussed in light of selective exposure theory and the reinforcing spirals model.

  • Waves of media democratization: A brief history of contemporary participatory practices in the media sphere
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Convergence. - : SAGE Publications. - 1354-8565 .- 1748-7382. ; 19:3, s. 287-294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article aims to provide a more historically grounded approach to the relationship between communication and participation, by distinguishing different waves of media democratization. The article first discusses the concept of participation and some of its complexities, and then sketches a series of intense moments of participation in and through the media in (mainly the second half) the 20th and the 21st century. At the same time, care is taken not to organize a linear-historical narrative, keeping in mind that the history of the democratization of Western societies and their media spheres is characterized by a series of continuities and discontinuities, dead ends and sedimented practices. Despite these ever-present fluctuations, the article argues that we can still see that structures, cultural resources and subjective dispositions have over time been geared more towards participation and equality, also within the media sphere.

  • Filterbubblor – ett hotfullt och vilseledande begrepp
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Fejk, filter och faktaresistens – hotar sociala medier demokratin?. - Stockholm : Institutet för mediestudier. - 9789198356670 ; , s. 39-70

  • Journalisternas frågor under Folkhälsomyndighetens presskonferenser under coronapandemin 2020
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Svensk nationell datatjänst.

  • Review of filter bubbles: overstated, oversold, and overused
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 69th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA). Washington D.C., USA, 24-28 May.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The media environment have changed fundamentally since the advent of internet. Several concerns has been raised that users of social networking sites are primarily selecting information they agree with, and therefore become enclosed in information cocoons which are further reinforced by algorithms. The purpose of this narrative review is therefore to (1) review research on selective exposure in the internet environment—e.g., filter bubbles—and, (2) reframe selective exposure theory to make room for different situational circumstances. The main finding is that online fragmentation has been overstated since users do not avoid information when using internet in general or social networking sites in particular. People do indeed seek information they agree with, but are not equally motivated to avoid information they disagree with, which therefore leaves a lot of room for incidental exposure to disagreeing information. However, the amount of diverse information is seldom the most important factor (for example when explaining political polarization), but rather how individuals interpret information.

  • Selective exposure to public service news over 30 years: the role of political preferences
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 68th Annual Conference of the International Communication Association (ICA). Prague, 24-28 May.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The transition from a low-choice (e.g., television) to a high-choice (e.g., internet) media environment has led to concerns about audience fragmentation, ideological enclaves, and selective exposure to partisan news media consistent with people’s political preferences. However, previous research has mainly focused on two-party systems (e.g., the United States), partisan news (e.g., Fox News or MSNBC), and single points in time. The aim of this paper is therefore to provide the most comprehensive study of which political preferences (ideological leaning, party support, and political interest) have driven selective exposure to public service news over 30 years, during the entire period from a low-choice to a high-choice media environment. Using an annual representative survey conducted from 1986 to 2015 in Sweden (n = 103,589), results suggest that (1) the ideological left and right are using public service news to the same extent over time, and that (2) support for parties outside (rather than inside) parliament accounts for a large decline in public service news use over time. But most importantly, (3) those who lack political interest show the largest decline in public service news use, while those who have a political interest sustain public service news use considerably more over time.

  • Selective online exposure and political polarization during Swedish election campaigns: a longitudinal analysis using four waves of panel data
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 6th ECREA European Communication Conference, Prague.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Internet has made it possible for individuals to increasingly select political news that match their political attitudes. This selective exposure also has the potential to mutually reinforce existing attitudes. However, very little is known about the long-term consequences, especially during election periods. We draw upon the reinforcing spirals model to study the mutual reinforcements between selective exposure and political ideology, by using a four-wave panel during five months with a representative random sample (n=2,281) from Sweden during the 2014 European parliamentary election and Swedish national election. Results suggests that individuals are not becoming more extreme in their political ideology during the election period, regardless of whether they are exposed to attitude-consistent or attitude-inconsistent news content.
