  • In Rhizomia : Actors, Networks and Resilience in Urban Landscapes
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With accelerating urbanization it is crucial to understand how urban ecosystems play a part in generating ecosystem services for urban dwellers, such as clean water, spaces for recreation, stress relief and improved air quality. An equally important question relate to who gets to enjoy these benefits, i.e. the distribution of ecosystem services, and how issues of power and equity influence the management of ecosystems. Through case studies from the urban landscape of Stockholm, this doctoral thesis engages with these perspectives through combining ecological theory with social theory, including social network analysis, actor-network theory and social movement theory. Strategies for how to improve urban ecosystem management are presented along with frameworks for how to analyze issues of power and equity in relation to natural resource management.Paper I shows that ecosystem management can be studied through analyzing the structure of social networks, i.e. the patterns of relations between agencies, stake-holders and user groups. Paper II and Paper III analyze, based on a network survey of 62 civil society organizations and in-depth interviews, a transformational process of how an urban local movement managed to protect a large urban green area from exploitation (The Stockholm National Urban Park). Paper IV discusses, based on several case studies from Stockholm, a conducive network structure for linking managers and user groups (e.g. allotment gardens, cemetery managers, and urban planners) across spatial ecological scales so as to improve urban green area management. Paper V presents a framework to analyze the social-ecological dynamics behind the generation and distribution of ecosystem services in urban landscapes. The thesis points towards the notion of "a social production of ecosystem services" and argues for deeper engagement with urban political ecology and critical geography to inform governance and collective action in relation to urban ecosystems.

  • Resource Extraction and Arctic Communities : The New Extractivist Paradigm
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For decades, a post–Cold War narrative heralded a “new Arctic,” with melting ice and snow and accessible resources that would build sustainable communities. Today, large parts of the Arctic are still trapped in the path dependencies of past resource extraction. At the same time, the impetus for green transitions and a “new industrialism” spells opportunities to shift the development model and build new futures for Arctic residents and Indigenous peoples. This book examines the growing Arctic resource dilemma. It explores the “new extractivist paradigm” that posits transitioning the region’s longstanding role of delivering minerals, fossil energy, and marine resources to one providing rare earth elements, renewable power, wilderness tourism, and scientific knowledge about climate change. With chapters from a global, interdisciplinary team of researchers, new opportunities and their implications for Arctic communities and landscapes are discussed, alongside the pressures and uncertainties in a region under geopolitical and environmental stress.

  • Planetary boundaries : Guiding human development on a changing planet
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 347:6223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The planetary boundaries framework defines a safe operating space for humanity based on the intrinsic biophysical processes that regulate the stability of the Earth system. Here, we revise and update the planetary boundary framework, with a focus on the underpinning biophysical science, based on targeted input from expert research communities and on more general scientific advances over the past 5 years. Several of the boundaries now have a two-tier approach, reflecting the importance of cross-scale interactions and the regional-level heterogeneity of the processes that underpin the boundaries. Two core boundaries-climate change and biosphere integrity-have been identified, each of which has the potential on its own to drive the Earth system into a new state should they be substantially and persistently transgressed.

  • Cultivating the Places of Knowledge
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Studies in Philosophy and Education. - : Springer Nature. - 0039-3746 .- 1573-191X. ; 21:4/5, s. 377-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discussion of universities and democracy has conventionally dealt first and foremost with the curriculum, or with the spirit of openness and tolerance which characterises the scientific inquiry. In this article I have added a discussion of the situatedness of knowledge and knowledge production, and, consequently, a discussion of the situated character of other roles of the university, including the democratic role. In the light of the regress of political parties and traditional popular movements - phenomena which seem to be true both as regards membership numbers and as regards level of activity - the role as a locally and regionally situated meeting place for a vitalisation and defence of democracy seems a promising one for the contemporary university. The article has also emphasised the links between culture, social capital ("the social fabric") in the surrounding society, and the economic growth and welfare of the city and region. With concepts such as Bildung (or education), civic competence (or civility), and culture, and I have tried to draw our attention to the actual "places of knowledge," whose importance will certainly grow in the years to come. The care, the cultivation, and the qualification of these places into supporting infrastructures for cultural life, creativity, industry, and democracy should be seen as a coherent, holistic mission. It needs recognition, and articulation, by all those who are interested in the university as a significant social factor: politicians, industry, the cultural sector, local communities, and, obviously, the academic community itself.
