  • Migration : ett hot mot välfärden?
  • 2018. - 1
  • Ingår i: Nation i ombildning. - Stockholm : Boréa Bokförlag. - 9789189140950 ; , s. 31-77

  • Preterm birth and educational disadvantage : heterogeneous effects
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Population Studies. - : Routledge. - 0032-4728 .- 1477-4747. ; 77:3, s. 459-474
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although preterm birth is the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality in advanced economies, evidence about the consequences of prematurity in later life is limited. Using Swedish registers for cohorts born 1982–94 (N  =  1,087,750), we examine the effects of preterm birth on school grades at age 16 using sibling fixed effects models. We further examine how school grades are affected by degree of prematurity and the compensating roles of family socio-economic resources and characteristics of school districts. Our results show that the negative effects of preterm birth are observed mostly among children born extremely preterm (<28 weeks); children born moderately preterm (32–<37 weeks) suffer no ill effects. We do not find any evidence for a moderating effect of parental socio-economic resources. Children born extremely preterm and in the top decile of school districts achieve as good grades as children born at full term in an average school district.

  • Does classroom diversity improve intergroup relations? : Short- and long-term effects of classroom diversity for cross-ethnic friendships and anti-immigrant attitudes in adolescence
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Group Processes & Intergroup Relations. - : Sage Publications. - 1368-4302 .- 1461-7188. ; 24:8, s. 1372-1390
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined short- and long-term effects of ethnic classroom diversity for intergroup relations in adolescence. Using a five-year panel of Swedish majority youth (MageT1 = 13.40, MageT5 = 17.30), we found only limited direct effects of classroom diversity on anti-immigrant attitudes. However, classroom diversity increased the likelihood of cross-ethnic friendships, which in turn was associated with lower levels of anti-immigrant attitudes. Moreover, we found that the effect of classroom diversity on friendships remained also after adolescents transitioned to new schools. The findings highlight the importance of longitudinal analyses and contribute to a deeper understanding of how intergroup relations develop during adolescence. It brings new insights related to the longevity of classroom effects and to cross-ethnic friendships' ability to mediate the diversity–attitudes relationship.

  • The Bigger the Better? Business Size and Small-Business Owners’ Subjective Well-Being
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Happiness Studies. - : Springer. - 1389-4978 .- 1573-7780. ; 22, s. 1071-1088
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business growth is often portrayed as an important outcome for small-business owners. Few empirical studies have however examined whether there is a positive relationship between business size and different dimensions of small-business owners’ subjective well-being. In a large cross-sectional sample (n = 1089) of small-business owners from Sweden, we investigate the relationship between business size and the two main components of subjective well-being, life satisfaction and emotional well-being. By means of structural equation modelling, we determine the importance of business size for subjective well-being by focusing on potential advantages (financial satisfaction) and disadvantages (time pressure) related to business size. The results show that there is no overall relationship between business size and life satisfaction, but a weak negative relationship between business size and emotional well-being. However, in a subsequent mediation analyses we find that these findings largely can be explained by the fact that financial satisfaction and time pressure relate to subjective well-being in opposite directions and thus cancel each other out. The results of the mediation analysis also reveal differences across the two components of subjective well-being. We here find that financial satisfaction is more important for small-business owners’ life satisfaction while time pressure is more important for their emotional well-being.

  • Lone threats : a register-based study of Swedish lone actors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Comparative and Applied Criminal Justice. - : Routledge. - 0192-4036 .- 2157-6475. ; 48:1, s. 75-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigates 30 lone actors in Sweden with a register-based design using a group of male lone actors and two reference groups: same-sex siblings and other male violent extremists. We compare lone actors to the reference groups along social background, criminal background, and co-offending relations (1995 –2016), and mental health (1980–2016). Our results show that lone actors are primarily born in Sweden to two Swedish-born parents. They have a high degree of criminality and cooffending, indicating that they are not completely loners in their criminal behaviour. They have higher enrolment in secondary education than the reference groups, but lower enrolment in higher education than other male violent extremists. Additionally, they suffer considerably more from mental disorders compared to the reference groups. An analysis of criminality and in- and outpatient hospitalisation over the life course indicates that lone actors may have had problems in their transition into middle age.

  • Matching the Pieces: The Presence of Idiosyncratic Deals and Their Impact on Retirement Preferences Among Older Workers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Work, Aging and Retirement. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 2054-4642 .- 2054-4650. ; 7:3, s. 240-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite working life prolongation having been at the center of the policy agenda in Europe for the last two decades, organizations’ engagement in formal age-management activities intended to strengthen older workers’ motivation and work ability appears limited. Given policies to extend working lives, negotiated individualized work arrangements—often called idiosyncratic deals (I-deals)—can be an informal and complementary approach to formalized age-management practices, improving the person–job fit and helping older workers extend their working lives. Nevertheless, research on I-deals and retirement preferences remains scarce in the Nordic context, where collective agreements regulate conditions of employment and the employer–employee relationship. Using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling, this study examines five areas of I-deals (i.e., Task and Work Responsibilities, Workload Reduction, Schedule Flexibility, Location Flexibility, and Financial Incentives) and their relationships with retirement preferences among Swedish public-sector employees aged 55 years or older (n = 4,499). Findings show that I-deals are generally less prevalent among women and older employees, as well as among those with poor health, in lower socioeconomic positions, and with shorter organizational tenure. Regarding retirement preferences, we found Task and Work Responsibilities to be related to later preferred retirement age, while, surprisingly, the opposite was observed for Workload Reduction, probably because individuals who received workload reductions also reported poorer health. Comparatively, factors such as matching employees’ competence, experience, and growth opportunities seem to be the most important for public-sector employees’ retirement preferences.

  • The relationship between work and family preferences and behaviors : A longitudinal study of gender differences in Sweden
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Acta Sociologica. - : Sage Publications. - 0001-6993 .- 1502-3869. ; 60:2, s. 120-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Proposed theories to explain gender inequality in the labor market and family, such as gender specialization within families and gender segregation in the labor markets, lack consideration for individual preferences. Preference theory accounts for individual choice and gendered preferences but has been substantially criticized, indicating a need for further research. This study uses Swedish longitudinal data to explore how preferences for work and family relate to behavior. We explore three critical issues raised in previous research: gender differences in preferences; the relationship between work and family changes and subsequent preferences; how preferences relate to work and family behaviors. Our results showed small general gender differences in preferences, although women had a stronger preference for both children and work than men. Changes in work status were further related to changes in work preferences, while changes in family status were related to changes in family preferences. Moreover, preferences had poor predictive power in relation to work and family behaviors. Our results indicate that preferences do not explain gender inequality in Sweden. The relationship between preferences and behaviors seems bidirectional and preferences and behavior within the family sphere has little to do with preferences and behavior within the work sphere.

  • Modelo en desorden : Estado de bienestar, dogmatismode austeridad y cambio radical en las políticasde migración suecas
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Migración y Desarollo. - Zacatezas, Mexico : Red Internacional de MIgracion y Desarrollo. - 1870-7599 .- 2448-7783. ; 16:31, s. 71-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The winds of xenophobia hovering over Europe have swept the moral politicalfoundations of an inclusive Swedish migration policy into the dustbin of history and twistedan enlightened left-right consensus on an open and humanitarian asylum policy into its mirroropposite. Lured by advances of the extreme right the main political parties have, since2015, come to indiscriminately embrace the view that immigration, etno-cultural diversityand an open-door refugee policy is detrimental to welfare and, in consequence, curbing migrationhas become the all dominant political strategem in vying for votes. The authorschallenge this widely accepted narrative by arguing that the sustainability of the Swedishwelfare state has not been undermined by migration but by consecutive Swedish governments'unbending adherence to austerity politics since the beginning of the 1990s. Austeritypolitics have, step by step, weakened the Swedish Model's socially integrative functions andprevented the implementation of an ambitious agenda, harvesting a potentially dynamic interplayof expansionary economic and social policies and a humanitarian asylum policy.
