  • Evaluation of integration of sustainable development in higher education in Sweden
  • 2020
  • In: International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1467-6370 .- 1758-6739. ; 21:4, s. 685-698
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose Since 2006, higher education institutions (HEIs) in Sweden, should according to the Higher Education Act, promote sustainable development (SD). In 2016, the Swedish Government asked the Swedish higher education authority to evaluate how this study is proceeding. The authority chose to focus on education. This paper aims to produce a report on this evaluation. Design/methodology/approach All 47 HEIs in Sweden were asked to write a self-evaluation report based on certain evaluation criteria. A panel was appointed consisting of academics and representatives for students and working life. The panel wrote an evaluation of each HEI, a report on general findings and recommendations, and gave an overall judgement of each HEI in two classes as follows: the HEI has well-developed processes for integration of SD in education or the HEI needs to develop their processes. Findings Overall, a mixed picture developed. Most HEIs could give examples of programmes or courses where SD was integrated. However, less than half of the HEIs had overarching goals for integration of SD in education or had a systematic follow-up of these goals. Even fewer worked specifically with pedagogy and didactics, teaching and learning methods and environments, sustainability competences or other characters of education for SD. Overall, only 12 out of 47 got a higher judgement. Originality/value This is a unique study in which all HEIs in a country are evaluated. This provides unique possibilities for identifying success factors and barriers. The importance of the leadership of the HEIs became clear.

  • Emotions in engineering education: Towards a research agenda
  • 2020
  • In: Proceedings - Frontiers in Education Conference, FIE. - : IEEE. - 1539-4565. ; 2020-October, s. 1-5
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This Work-in-Progress research paper describes preliminary work on a research agenda for emotions in engineering education. Emotions play an important role for teaching and learning in engineering education, but research on the topic is scarce. To spur research in this area, the authors participate in an international collaboration that aims to map existing research, identify questions that are under-researched, and outline important questions for future research on emotions in engineering education. In this paper, we describe preliminary work that has been done in preparation of an international symposium during which a first draft of the research agenda on emotions in engineering education will be developed. At FIE 2020, we will present both this preparatory work and the agenda itself.

  • Places, spaces and encounters with nature–socio-material discourses in Swedish preschools
  • 2024
  • In: International Journal of Early Years Education. - : Routledge. - 0966-9760 .- 1469-8463.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article investigates views and discourses on outdoor play in preschool teachers talks about their playgrounds and outdoor practices in Swedish preschools. Included were a strategic sample of teachers from newer, larger preschool facilities with more programmed outdoor space, and teachers from older, more traditional facilities containing more nature. Through interviews with 38 teachers at 21 preschools and a thematic analysis inspired by socio-material theory, we identified three main themes: The meanings and limits of free outdoor play, the view on nature and children’s encounters with nature, and dangers and risks in the playground. Within these themes, we show how the teachers’ views construct discourses related to the outdoor educational places and spaces that are available. Furthermore, changes in preschool curricula as well as in the playground material and design are active agents in constructing discourses on outdoor play, including risks and limitations, beyond teachers’ own beliefs on children’s needs.

  • “One day, one problem” : applying SOTL on a course about teaching in higher education
  • 2015
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • At the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Umeå University, we are responsible for the development of university teachers’ pedagogical competence. One of the main purposes of our courses is to help teachers develop an array of teaching methods – including a sound basis for their decisions about which method to use. We work with teaching methods for student active learning that develop sustainable knowledge (Hattie, 2009), for example Problem Based Learning, PBL. Our problem is that this usually takes a lot of time on our short courses. So we asked ourselves: How can we use SoTL to describe, develop and evaluate a method that gives key transitions in the university teachers’ journey towards pedagogical competence, both theoretically and practically (Dietz-Uhler and Bishop-Clark, 2012)? We wanted a group of teachers on one of our courses to learn more about PBL and to be active while doing this. We also wanted a meta-didactic discussion about it afterwards. We found a method called “One day, one problem” (O’Grady, 2012) that we wanted to try. We had to redesign the method slightly to fit our context, by writing a relevant scenario in line with our expected learning outcomes. Apart from this we followed the suggested process in the article. We carried out formative and summative evaluations, and we as teachers documented the activity. Our preliminary analysis shows that this method gave us what we wanted since the learners were positive towards working this way, and the self- evaluated learning process and product was given high grades. Our preliminary results and conclusion is that this method is a useful way to both teach about the PBL process and to work with course content. We also saw that SoTL, systematically searching, finding, developing and evaluating a new teaching method is a good way to develop both our own and our students’ pedagogical competence.

  • Innovating literacy learning for 21st century teacher education
  • 2023
  • In: The future of teacher education. - Leiden ; Boston : Brill Academic Publishers. - 9789004678545 - 9789004678538 - 9789004678521 ; , s. 286-310
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Teaching training can lag changes in school and society. With the onset of ubiquitous writing and mobile devices, the literacies experiences of today’s school and teacher students are different to those of most teacher trainers. In this chapter, a sequence of case studies is presented linking the school student, the teacher education student, and the teacher educator to provide a multifaceted picture of literacies development. Two questionnaires answered by 71 and 39 upper secondary school students, respectively, provided a picture of literacies use in upper secondary school (Case Study 1). The written tasks and the post-writing interviews with three upper secondary school students highlighted the tensions between out-of-school ubiquitous literacies and the in-school academic writing demands (Case Study 2). The teacher education student participatory research case study with four students challenged perceptions of how teacher education students learn academic literacies, and of student resilience (Case Study 3). Together, the case studies showed a disconnection in school between school student contemporary ubiquitous literacies and school literacies expectations. Although finding ways to ameliorate this disconnection through innovative teacher education is important, finding ways to simultaneously strengthen student teachers’ learning autonomy, strengthen the sustainability of their teaching to keep abreast of ubiquitous literacies changes is central to make school inclusive and sustainable.

  • Special Session: Emotions in Engineering Education - A Roadmap to Possibilities in Research and Practice
  • 2020
  • In: Proceedings - Frontiers in Education Conference, FIE. - : IEEE. - 1539-4565. ; 2020-October
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This special session invites scholarly educators and engineering education researchers to learn about nascent research and innovative practice possibilities related to emotions in engineering education. Through an interactive session, facilitators will guide participants into developing their own thinking in relation to how emotions can shed novel insight on innovative teaching solutions and educational research. We have designed the special session to catalyze community around this topical interest for both education researchers and scholarly educators.
