  • In-cylinder Surface Thermometry using Laser Induced Phosphorescence
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. ; , s. 482-487
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surface temperature in internal combustion engines is of high interest when studying heat losses. Two approaches for retrieving the surface temperatures are thermocouples and Laser Induced Phosphorescence, LIP. This study aims to analyze LIP as a technique for measuring surface temperature in internal combustion engines. The motivation for this study is the need for accurate surface temperatures which can be used by predictive models and increase knowledge about heat transfer. In this work LIP measurements have been carried out in two optical engines. In the first engine a thermographic phosphor was applied on top of a metal piston. The second engine was fitted with a quartz liner which was coated with phosphor material. Several coating thicknesses have been tested and the LIP temperature was extracted from both opposing sides of the phosphor. Both engines were run in HCCI mode with reference fuels and electrically heated air. In a previous publication, the authors showed that a layer of phosphor can show different temperatures i.e. a higher temperature on the side facing the cylinder gas than on the side facing the wall. In this study it is shown which thickness is needed to accurately present the temperature for typical engine combustion. With an increasing thickness of the phosphor material, the surface gets gradually insulated and the phosphor temperature reading becomes inaccurate. LIP measurements from a quartz ring and a metal piston have been compared and the temperature increase during combustion is similar although the heat conductivity of quartz is 40-200 times smaller than the metal piston. Measurements with thermocouples often show a lower temperature increase than what is seen in the LIP results. The difference in heat conductivity between the phosphor coating and the underlying surface is of importance for understanding what temperature is actually measured.

  • Computational Investigation of the Effects of Injection Strategy and Rail Pressure on Isobaric Combustion in an Optical Compression Ignition Engine
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: SAE Technical Papers. - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International. - 0148-7191 .- 2688-3627.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The high-pressure isobaric combustion has been proposed as the most suitable combustion mode for the double compre4ssion expansion engine (DCEE) concept. Previous experimental and simulation studies have demonstrated an improved efficiency compared to the conventional diesel combustion (CDC) engine. In the current study, isobaric combustion was achieved using a single injector with multiple injections. Since this concept involves complex phenomena such as spray to spray interactions, the computational models were extensively validated against the optical engine experiment data, to ensure high-fidelity simulations. The considered optical diagnostic techniques are Mie-scattering, fuel tracer planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), and natural flame luminosity imaging. Overall, a good agreement between the numerical and experimental results was obtained. Upon validation, the optimized models have been used to conduct a comparative study between the conventional diesel combustion (CDC) and the isobaric combustion cases with different pressure levels, in terms of engine performance and emissions. Compared to the CDC case, the isobaric combustion cases led to a lower NOx emission but higher sooting tendency due to the increased diffusion combustion feature, although most of the soot was oxidized in the later engine cycle. To further reduce soot emission, the effects of various rail pressures and injector holes number were evaluated. The results indicated that the higher injection pressure was more effective in soot reduction for the isobaric combustion case but it deteriorated the thermal efficiency. It was also found that increasing the number of injector holes from the reference six to ten led to the lowest soot emission without significantly affecting the efficiency.

  • To facilitate a fair bioeconomy transition, stronger regional-level linkages are needed
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Biofuels Bioproducts & Biorefining-Biofpr. - : Wiley. - 1932-104X .- 1932-1031. ; 16:4, s. 929-941
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The great hopes in Brussels that a circular bioeconomy will help bridge the growing divide between urban and rural areas and allow the hinterlands to prosper from 'green growth' are addressed in this article, which reflects on insights from three Nordic case studies of brown, green and blue biomass use at different levels of technology readiness. A closer examination of the forward, backward, fiscal and final demand linkages at regional level from increased biomass utilization, from eastern Finland and northern Sweden to Jutland and North Atlantic islands, suggests that linkages are and will remain relatively weak, predominantly dashing the expectations. As suppliers and exporters of natural resources, disadvantaged regions may all too easily get locked into a 'staples trap', where the value creation evaporates owing in part to the steep start-up costs and the associated boom-and-bust cycles, which place them in a weak position vis-a-vis the resource manufacturers and consumers. To make the prospects of development, employment and prosperity in the hinterlands materialize, measures are needed to strengthen the regional-level economic linkages. Regional-level revolving funds based on benefit-sharing instruments related to natural resources can be used to bolster economic development, as reflected in such schemes present in both China and Canada. We call for further research into whether and how such approaches can be replicated successfully by channeling revenues from biomass cultivation to regional-scale revolving funds, with mandates to strengthen long-term economic linkages and prosperity within the hinterlands. • A Predictive Real Time NOx Model for Conventional and Partially Premixed Diesel Combustion
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SAE, Session: Diesel Engine Modeling. - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International. ; 115
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A previously presented robust and fast diagnostic NOx model was modified into a predictive model. This was done by using simple yet physically-based models for fuel injection, ignition delay, premixed heat release rate and diffusion combustion heat release rate. The model can be used both for traditional high temperature combustion and for high-EGR low temperature combustion. It was possible to maintain a high accuracy and calculation speed of the NOx model itself. The root mean square of the relative model error is 16 % and the calculation speed is around one second on a PC. Combustion characteristics such as ignition delay, CA50 and the general shape of the heat release rate are well predicted by the combustion model. The model is aimed at real time NOx calculation and optimization in a vehicle on the road.

  • A Real Time NOx Model for Conventional and Partially Premixed Diesel Combustion
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SAE, Session: Compression Ignition Combustion Processes (Part 3 of 3). - 400 Commonwealth Drive, Warrendale, PA, United States : SAE International.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a fast NOx model is presented which can be used for engine optimization, aftertreatment control or virtual mapping. A cylinder pressure trace is required as input data. High calculation speed is obtained by using table interpolation to calculate equilibrium temperatures and species concentrations. Test data from a single-cylinder engine and from a complete six-cylinder engine have been used for calibration and validation of the model. The model produces results of good agreement with emission measurements using approximately 50 combustion product zones and a calculation time of one second per engine cycle. Different compression ratios, EGR rates, injection timing, inlet pressures etc. were used in the validation tests. The model calculates thermal (high-temperature) NOx formation by the two reactions of the original Zeldovich mechanism but by using a simple empirical compensation algorithm, the model can also be used for low-temperature NOx formation associated with high EGR rates and long ignition delay.

  • Crank Angle Resolved HC Detection Using LIF in the Exhausts of Small Two-Stroke Engines Running at High Engine Speed
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: SAE Transactions, Journal of Engines. - 0096-736X. ; 105:961927
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to separate the HC-emissions from two-stroke engines into short-circuit losses and emissions due to incomplete combustion, Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) measurements were performed on the exhaust gases just outside the exhaust ports of two engines of different designs. The difference between the two engines was the design of the transfer channels. One engine had "finger" transfer channels and one had "cup handle" transfer channels. Apart from that they were similar. The engine with "finger" transfer channels was earlier known to give more short-circuiting losses than the other engine, and that behavior was confirmed by these measurements. Generally, the results show that the emission of hydrocarbons has two peaks, one just after exhaust port opening and one late in the scavenging phase. The spectral information shows differences between the two peaks and it can be concluded that the latter peak is due to short-circuiting and the earlier due to incomplete combustion. The flow outside the exhaust port was measured with Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV). These measurements confirm the occurrence of two emission peaks.

  • Control of a turbo charged NVO HCCI engine using a model based approach
  • 2009. - 26
  • Ingår i: 2009 IFAC Workshop on Engine and Powertrain Control, Simulation and Modeling, E-COSM'09 - Final Report. - 9783902661586 ; 42, s. 79-86
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By using a turbo the operating range of the HCCI engine can be increased, but at the expense of increased controller complexity. The dynamics the turbo introduces in the intake and the exhaust manifolds, have a large impact on the in-cylinder mixture temperature, pressure and finally the combustion phasing. To compensate for this and to maintain desired combustion phasing, precise control of the negative valve overlap is required. A physical model is therefore developed and linearized to yield a state space model, used for Kalman filter and main feedback controller design. The original nonlinear model is inverted to provide feedforward. The main actuators for the controller are the intake and exhaust cam phasing, fuel amount and timing of the injections. The main sensor signals used by the controller are the cylinder pressure, intake exhaust pressure, and intake temperature. The model is validated against experimental data, simulated with the controller and finally the controller was tested on the real engine. The article shows the big picture of how a control system for a spray guided, turbo charged, negative valve overlap HCCI engine can be developed.
