  • Feedforward Neural Network-Based EVM Estimation : Impairment Tolerance in Coherent Optical Systems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 1077-260X .- 1558-4542. ; 28:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Error vector magnitude (EVM) is commonly used for evaluating the quality of m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (mQAM) signals. Recently proposed deep learning techniques for EVM estimation extend the functionality of conventional optical performance monitoring (OPM). In this article, we evaluate the tolerance of our developed EVM estimation scheme against various impairments in coherent optical systems. In particular, we analyze the signal quality monitoring capabilities in the presence of residual in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance, fiber nonlinearity, and laser phase noise. We use feedforward neural networks (FFNNs) to extract the EVM information from amplitude histograms of 100 symbols per IQ cluster signal sequence captured before carrier phase recovery. We perform simulations of the considered impairments, along with an experimental investigation of the impact of laser phase noise. To investigate the tolerance of the EVM estimation scheme to each impairment type, we compare the accuracy for three training methods: 1) training without impairment, 2) training one model for all impairments, and 3) training an independent model for each impairment. Results indicate a good generalization of the proposed EVM estimation scheme, thus providing a valuable reference for developing next-generation intelligent OPM systems.

  • Carrier Phase Recovery Algorithms for Coherent Optical Circular mQAM Systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 34:11, s. 2717-2723
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase noise tolerance of circular multilevel quadrature amplitude modulation (C-mQAM) constellations employing different carrier phase recovery (CPR) algorithms is studied. A differential decoding scheme and a bit mapping for this type of constellations are proposed. A novel CPR scheme for C-mQAM constellations is also presented. The particular distribution of the constellation points in a C-mQAM signal is exploited to reduce the required Nth power for the removal of the modulation component by a factor of two. Hence, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is drastically reduced. The combined linewidth symbol duration product (Delta nu T-s) tolerance of different CPR algorithms for C-mQAM constellations is studied and compared with the proposed CPR scheme. The results are analyzed at 3.8e-3 and 1e-2 bit error rate forward error correction limits. The proposed CPR scheme achieves similar Delta nu Ts tolerance compared to single stage BPS algorithm while its computational complexity is reduced by group factors of 27.2 vertical bar 32.3, and 30.5 vertical bar 32.6 (in the form of multipliers vertical bar adders) for C-16QAM and C-64QAM, respectively.

  • Free-Space Communications Enabled by Quantum Cascade Lasers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi (a) applications and materials science. - : Wiley-VCH Verlag. - 1862-6300 .- 1862-6319. ; 218:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Future generations of wireless communication systems are expected to support orders of magnitude faster data transfer with much lower latency than the currently deployed solutions. Development of wireless transceivers of higher bandwidth, low energy consumption, and small footprint becomes challenging with radio frequency (RF) electronic technologies. Photonics-assisted technologies show many advantages in generating signals of ultrabroad bandwidth at high carrier frequencies in the millimeter-wave, terahertz, and IR bands. Among these frequency options, the mid-IR band has recently attracted great interest for future wireless communication due to its intrinsic merits of low propagation loss and high tolerance of atmospheric perturbations. A promising source for mid-IR free-space communications is the semiconductor quantum cascade laser (QCL), which can be directly modulated at a high speed and facilitates monolithic integration for compact transceivers. Herein, the research and development of QCL-based free-space communications are reviewed and a recent experimental study of multi-gigabit transmission with a directly modulated mid-IR QCL and a commercial off-the-shelf IR photodetector is reported on. Up to 4 Gb s−1 transmission of two advanced modulation formats, namely, four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) and discrete multitone (DMT) modulation, is demonstrated. © 2020 The Authors.

  • Silica Microsphere WGMR-Based Kerr-OFC Light Source and Its Application for High-Speed IM/DD Short-Reach Optical Interconnects
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 2076-3417. ; 12:9, s. 4722-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Kerr optical frequency combs (OFCs) based on silica microsphere whispering gallery mode resonator (WGMR) have various applications where they are used as a light source. For telecommunication purposes, WGMR-based Kerr-OFC comb generators can be physically realized using silica microsphere resonators and can be used to replace multiple laser arrays. In such a realization, these novel light sources have the potential to demonstrate an attractive solution for intra-datacenter interconnects (DCI). In this paper, we show an experimental demonstration of a silica microsphere WGMR-based Kerr OFC light source where newly generated 400 GHz spaced carriers together with powerful linear equalization techniques, such as a linear symbol-spaced adaptive decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) with feed-forward (FF) and feedback (FB) taps, provide an alternative to individual lasers ensuring low-cost and low-complexity IM/DD scheme for the transmission of NRZ-OOK modulated signals at data rates up to 50 Gbps/lambda over 2 km SMF link. Finally, we demonstrate a record 50 Gbps per lambda transmission of NRZ-OOK modulated signals with a novel silica microsphere WGMR-based Kerr-OFC as a light source operating in the optical C-band, surpassing the previously demonstrated data rate record by five times.

  • Automated diagnostic of virtualized service performance degradation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 2018 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium, NOMS 2018. - New York : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 1-9
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Service assurance for cloud applications is a challenging task and is an active area of research for academia and industry. One promising approach is to utilize machine learning for service quality prediction and fault detection so that suitable mitigation actions can be executed. In our previous work, we have shown how to predict service-level metrics in real-time just from operational data gathered at the server side. This gives the service provider early indications on whether the platform can support the current load demand. This paper provides the logical next step where we extend our work by proposing an automated detection and diagnostic capability for the performance faults manifesting themselves in cloud and datacenter environments. This is a crucial task to maintain the smooth operation of running services and minimizing downtime. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach which exploits the interpretative capabilities of Self- Organizing Maps (SOMs) to automatically detect and localize different performance faults for cloud services.

  • Post-hoc Explainability for Time Series Classification: Towards a Signal Processing Perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE signal processing magazine (Print). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1053-5888 .- 1558-0792. ; 39:4, s. 119-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Time series data correspond to observations of phenomena that are recorded over time [1]. Such data are encountered regularly in a wide range of applications, such as speech and music recognition, monitoring health and medical diagnosis, financial analysis, motion tracking, and shape identification, to name a few. With such a diversity of applications and the large variations in their characteristics, time series classification is a complex and challenging task. One of the fundamental steps in the design of time series classifiers is that of defining or constructing the discriminant features that help differentiate between classes. This is typically achieved by designing novel representation techniques [2] that transform the raw time series data to a new data domain, where subsequently a classifier is trained on the transformed data, such as one-nearest neighbors [3] or random forests [4]. In recent time series classification approaches, deep neural network models have been employed that are able to jointly learn a representation of time series and perform classification [5]. In many of these sophisticated approaches, the discriminant features tend to be complicated to analyze and interpret, given the high degree of nonlinearity.

  • Demo abstract : Elastic deployment of robust distributed control planes with performance guarantees
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE INFOCOM 2020 - IEEE Conference on Computer Communications Workshops, INFOCOM WKSHPS 2020. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. ; , s. 1276-1277
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent control plane solutions in a software-defined network (SDN) setting assume physically distributed but logically centralized control instances: a distributed control plane (DCP). As networks become more heterogeneous with increasing amount and diversity of network resources, DCP deployment strategies must be both fast and flexible to cope with varying network conditions whilst fulfilling constraints. However, many approaches are too slow for practical applications and often address only bandwidth or delay constraints, while control-plane reliability is overlooked and control-traffic routability is not guaranteed. We demonstrate the capabilities of our optimization framework [1]-[3] for fast deployment of DCPs, guaranteeing routability in line with control service reliability, bandwidth and latency requirements. We show that our approach produces robust deployment plans under changing network conditions. Compared to state of the art solvers, our approach is magnitudes faster, enabling deployment of DCPs within minutes and seconds, rather than days and hours.
