  • Techno-economic and business feasibility analysis of 5G transport networks
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Optical and Wireless Convergence for 5G Networks. - : Wiley. ; , s. 273-295
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter introduces a techno-economic framework that provides a complete market analysis of the various business actors for any type of mobile access network deployments. It presents a case study where the proposed business feasibility framework is applied. The chapter presents a comprehensive techno-economic framework for estimating the total cost of ownership (TCO) of a backhaul network segment as well as for analyzing the business viability of a given wireless network deployment. It focuses on two backhaul technologies: microwave and fiber. The chapter addresses the framework proposed specifically only the backhaul segment, but it is general enough to also be applied to the other 5G transport solutions. It also presents the TCO module used in the proposed framework. The module covers both the Capital Expenditure and the Operational Expenditure aspects of the backhaul segment. The backhaul network is responsible for aggregating the users' traffic from the wireless access to the metro/backbone segment of the network.

  • Bridging the Terahertz Gap : Photonics-assisted Free-Space Communications from the Submillimeter-Wave to the Mid-Infrared
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 40:10, s. 3149-3162
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since about one and half centuries ago, at the dawn of modern communications, the radio and the optics have been two separate electromagnetic spectrum regions to carry data. Differentiated by their generation/detection methods and propagation properties, the two paths have evolved almost independently until today. The optical technologies dominate the long-distance and high-speed terrestrial wireline communications through fiber-optic telecom systems, whereas the radio technologies have mainly dominated the short- to medium-range wireless scenarios. Now, these two separate counterparts are both facing a sign of saturation in their respective roadmap horizons, particularly in the segment of free-space communications. The optical technologies are extending into the mid-wave and long-wave infrared (MWIR and LWIR) regimes to achieve better propagation performance through the dynamic atmospheric channels. Radio technologies strive for higher frequencies like the millimeter-wave (MMW) and sub-terahertz (sub-THz) to gain broader bandwidth. The boundary between the two is becoming blurred and intercrossed. During the past few years, we witnessed technological breakthroughs in free-space transmission supporting very high data rates, many achieved with the assistance of photonics. This paper focuses on such photonics-assisted free-space communication technologies in both the lower and upper sides of the THz gap and provides a detailed review of recent research and development activities on some of the key enabling technologies. Our recent experimental demonstrations of high-speed free-space transmissions in both frequency regions are also presented as examples to show the system requirements for device characteristics and digital signal processing (DSP) performance.

  • Mark ratio modulation over pulse position modulation
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Optical Fiber Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-9912 .- 1068-5200. ; 57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Orthogonal modulation superimposes non-amplitude-modulated signals on Manchester coded or pulse position modulated amplitude shift keying (ASK) signals, allowing two traffic flows with different bit rates to be modulated on the same wavelength channel, and hence improving spectrum efficiency. Inspired by the orthogonal modulation, this paper proposes a novel modulation format, i.e., mark ratio modulation over pulse position modulation (PPM), which utilizes the mark ratio difference between the PPM symbols and the inverse PPM symbols to deliver an overlaid signal. Better than traditional orthogonal modulation, in the mark ratio modulation over PPM, both low-speed and high-speed traffic flows are modulated by ASK with no need to sacrifice the extinction ratio, while keeping the reception simple and easy. According to theoretical analysis and test, we found 4PPM is a good option, which can balance the trade-off between the PPM signal's effective bit rate and the mark ratio modulated signal's quality.

  • Free-Space Communications Enabled by Quantum Cascade Lasers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physica Status Solidi (a) applications and materials science. - : Wiley-VCH Verlag. - 1862-6300 .- 1862-6319. ; 218:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Future generations of wireless communication systems are expected to support orders of magnitude faster data transfer with much lower latency than the currently deployed solutions. Development of wireless transceivers of higher bandwidth, low energy consumption, and small footprint becomes challenging with radio frequency (RF) electronic technologies. Photonics-assisted technologies show many advantages in generating signals of ultrabroad bandwidth at high carrier frequencies in the millimeter-wave, terahertz, and IR bands. Among these frequency options, the mid-IR band has recently attracted great interest for future wireless communication due to its intrinsic merits of low propagation loss and high tolerance of atmospheric perturbations. A promising source for mid-IR free-space communications is the semiconductor quantum cascade laser (QCL), which can be directly modulated at a high speed and facilitates monolithic integration for compact transceivers. Herein, the research and development of QCL-based free-space communications are reviewed and a recent experimental study of multi-gigabit transmission with a directly modulated mid-IR QCL and a commercial off-the-shelf IR photodetector is reported on. Up to 4 Gb s−1 transmission of two advanced modulation formats, namely, four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) and discrete multitone (DMT) modulation, is demonstrated. © 2020 The Authors.

  • SOA pattern effect mitigation by neural network based pre-equalizer for 50G PON
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087 .- 1094-4087. ; 29:16, s. 24714-24722
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is widely used for power amplification in O-band, particularly for passive optical networks (PONs) which can greatly benefit its advantages of simple structure, low power consumption and integrability with photonics circuits. However, the annoying nonlinear pattern effect degrades system performance when the SOA is needed as a pre-amplifier in PONs. Conventional solutions for pattern effect mitigation are either based on optical filtering or gain clamping. They are not simple or sufficiently flexible for practical deployment. Neural network (NN) has been demonstrated for impairment compensation in optical communications thanks to its powerful nonlinear fitting ability. In this paper, for the first time, NN-based equalizer is proposed to mitigate the SOA pattern effect for 50G PON with intensity modulation and direct detection. The experimental results confirm that the NN-based equalizer can effectively mitigate the SOA nonlinear pattern effect and significantly improve the dynamic range of receiver, achieving 29-dB power budget with the FEC limit at 1e-2. Moreover, the well-trained NN model in the receiver side can be directly placed at the transmitter in the optical line terminal to pre-equalize the signal for transmission so as to simplify digital signal processing in the optical network unit.

  • Kernel Affine Projection for Nonlinearity Tolerant Optical Short Reach Systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 68:10, s. 6403-6412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonlinearity is one of the key issues that hinder the development of high-capacity optical short reach systems. This paper proposes three variants of kernel affine projection (KAP) algorithms, all of which combine kernel mapping and affine projection in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space for compensating nonlinear impairments in optical short reach systems. An intensity modulation/direct detection system with a single digital-to-analogue converter, a packaged externally modulated laser and a packaged InP photo-detector is used for experimental demonstration, achieving 238-Gbps (net rate 222-Gbps). Experimental results show that the KAP algorithms can mitigate nonlinear impairments in short-reach communications while maintaining low complexity in reproducing kernel Hilbert space.
