  • Rapana thomasiana hemocyanin (RtH): Comparison of the two isoforms, RtH1 and RtH2, at 19 angstrom 16 angstrom resolution
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Micron. - : Elsevier BV. - 0968-4328 .- 1878-4291. ; 37:6, s. 566-576
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of the two 8.4 MDa Rapana thomasiana hemocyanin isoforms, RtH1 and RtH2, have been obtained by cryoelectron microscopy of molecules embedded in vitreous ice and single particle image processing. The final 3D structures of the RtH1 and RtH2 didecamers at 19 angstrom and 16 angstrom resolution, respectively, are very similar to earlier reconstructions of gastropodan hemocyanins, revealing structural features such as the obliquely oriented subunits, the five- and two-fold symmetrical axes. Three new interactions are defined; two of them connecting the arch and the wall while the third is formed between the collar and the wall. The collar-wall connection and one of the arch-wall connections are positioned between two individual subunit dimers, while the second arch-wall connection is located between two subunits within the subunit dimer. All three interactions establish connections to the first tier of the wall. Furthermore, for each interaction we have allocated two first tier functional units most likely involved in forming the connections. (

  • Biomass outtake and bioenergy development in Sweden : the role of policy and economic presumptions
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891. ; 34:8, s. 771-778
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we review and analyse the policy design of biomass residue outtake in Sweden, focusing in particular on how public authorities specify and motivate rules and guidelines for the extraction of slash and stumps. The results show that the Swedish regulations are built on a mixed approach, including both voluntary, procedural and substantive requirements. The recommendations emphasize many merits of residue extraction, particularly climate change mitigation, new employment opportunities and reduced dependency on energy supplies from abroad. We identify a strong focus on precaution, evident in the risks for undesirable effects on nutritional balance and heavy metals in the soil, on biological diversity and on water quality in lakes and watercourses. The recommendations have remained relatively stable during the last 10 years, but the harvest of forest biomass for energy has varied. The annual harvest rate was positively related with energy prices. Harvest was much more extensive in the south, which is closer to the market. We conclude that economic presumptions have influenced the extent of slash harvest while environmental concerns seem to have limited the extraction of whole stumps. We expect that current levels of residue outtake can quickly change if the energy prices change.

  • Cost-effective reductions in greenhouse gas emissions : Reducing fuel consumption or replacing fossil fuels with biofuels
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Energy Policy. - : Elsevier. - 0301-4215 .- 1873-6777. ; 190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector can be reduced by decreasing fuel use by different means, and by blending biofuels into fossil fuels. A cost-effective combination of these measures is determined by spatially specific characteristics such as fuel demand, feedstock production costs, and greenhouse gas emissions from the feedstock production. We developed a spatially explicit model to explore the role of reduced transport fuel use and increased use of domestically produced biofuel, respectively, in a cost-effective policy for greenhouse gas abatement. The model is applied to domestic lignocellulosic biofuel from agricultural land, gasoline, and diesel for road transport in Sweden. The results show that the use of biofuel is particularly cost-effective under low and modestly stringent abatement targets. For more stringent targets, decreased fuel end use dominates the abatement portfolio. Replacing the emissions target by a biofuel production target increases the marginal cost of reducing emissions by up to 250%. With the current vehicle fleet, technical constraints on blendin possibilities limit the role of biofuels at higher target levels.

  • Direct and indirect effects of the fungicide azoxystrobin in outdoor brackish water microcosms
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Ecotoxicology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0963-9292 .- 1573-3017. ; 19:2, s. 431-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of the strobilurin fungicide azoxystrobin were studied in brackish water microcosms, with natural plankton communities and sediment. Two experiments were conducted: Experiment 1 (nominal conc. 0, 15 and 60 mu g/L, 24-L outdoor microcosms for 21 days) and a second, follow-up, Experiment 2 (nominal conc. 0, 3, 7.5, 15 mu g/L, 4-L indoor microcosms for 12 days). The microcosms represent a simplified brackish water community found in shallow semi-enclosed coastal areas in agricultural districts in the Baltic Sea region. Measured water concentrations of the fungicide (Experiment 1) were, on average, 83 and 62% of nominal concentrations directly after application, and 25 and 30% after 21 days, for the low and high dose treatments, respectively, corresponding to mean DT50-values of 15.1 and 25.8 days, for low and high dose treatments, respectively. In Experiment 1, direct toxic effects on calanoid copepods at both test concentrations were observed. Similarly, in Experiment 2, the copepod abundance was significantly reduced at all tested concentrations. There were also significant secondary effects on zooplankton and phytoplankton community structure, standing stocks and primary production. Very few ecotoxicological studies have investigated effects of plant protection products on Baltic organisms in general and effects on community structure and function specifically. Our results show that azoxystrobin is toxic to brackish water copepods at considerably lower concentrations than previously reported from single species tests on freshwater crustaceans, and that direct toxic effects on this ecologically important group may lead to cascade effects altering lower food webs and ecosystem functioning.
